The First Time

He kissed her forehead

Communication was hard to keep between planets and starcrafts. He remembered as a kid, whenever his mother was off planet working, the only way they could keep in touch was through video recordings. Sometimes it would be months between messages. It was a bit disappointing that not a lot had changed in that department since he was a boy. Especially when the news that needed to be communicated was life changing.

He stood in his office, Spock and Bones there too just in case. And they waited with baited breath for her to view the message. When she stepped out of the smaller room, her eyes were red and she looked as if she could barely hold herself up.

"Sonja," Bones began, but found that there were no words to say.

"We are sorry for your loss." Spock contributed after a long glance at the speechless doctor.

She opened her mouth for a moment before finally vocalizing a thank you. She turned her body towards Jim. "Permission… to retire to my quarters, Captain."

"Of course." He answered.

She started to say thank you, but her voice did not come forward. She bit her lip to cover the malfunction and quickly exited the room. She made it to the turbo lift without garnering attention and slumped back against the wall as the doors began to close her in.

Jim jumped through the doors at the last second. Seeing that she was too dazed to be surprised at his entrance, he mutely took his place beside her, watching as she fought so hard to keep herself together.

Without a word, he reached forward to push the emergency stop button, holding them between floors. "Sonja," He whispered, reaching for her.

She felt his hand warm on her arm; her eyes shut and a lone tear escaped.

He pulled her easily into his embrace, his lips brushing her forehead before she nestled her head in the nook of his neck. She clung to him and cried. For what felt like hours.
