Chapter 24:
A little misunderstanding.
It didn't happen when she was with Jesse right? Or did? When she was with Finn it happened a couple of times. When she found out he slept with Santana, when Finn got back with Quinn though it wasn't just because of Finn, the same when Finn was helping Quinn with the prom queen thing. Brody? Yes, because of Cassandra. David? Once because of a fan. But despite these occurrences she doesn't see herself as a jealous person. Okay, maybe just a little.
But being someone very reasonable as she thinks she is; she decides to put every reservation she might have aside and get to know the girl better. Maybe after that she will see that everything was a misunderstanding on her part.
Oh! The world is rainbows and unicorns when you wake up nestled in the arms of the love of your life. Well, except when you don't.
Rachel sits up on her bed, eyes half open as the sunlight is invading the bedroom. She hears the purr of her kitty cat and smiles moving her legs and putting her feet on the floor.
"Hi sophie."
She takes a deep breath and runs her hand through her long hair, looking over her shoulder at the spot where Quinn should have been laying. The Broadway star gets out of her bed and slowly walks to her bathroom. In her mirror she can see the remains of their passion. Clearly in bed they don't have any issues.
As Rachel brushes her teeth she starts thinking something over, something her dads told her once. You can't build up a relationship without trust. Trust is the key to a healthy relationship. Looking at her reflection on the mirror she says resolute.
"I do trust Quinn."
Maybe she was being a little too clingy. Okay, a person needs her time with their friends too, but Rachel thinks she is priority, whatever the circumstances.
After all the steps of her morning routine Rachel finally heads to the kitchen. She is eating her breakfast when she hears the front door opening and moments later she hears her girlfriend's voice. Quinn is on the phone.
"I'm home… I don't know… It's Rachel, she always wake up early… don't tell me you're sorry now okay? Just go to rest. You need it too."
Reality hits her. Quinn left their bed on daybreak and Rachel is sure she won't like the reason why the blonde left her alone. All her angry though dissipates in the moment she sees her girlfriend walking into the kitchen. To say Quinn looks tired is an understatement.
"Hey, you're up."
"I am." Rachel says with little emotion.
"Something is wrong?"
Rachel lets out a grunt.
"Something is wrong? I don't know Quinn, you tell me!"
"Baby I'm really tired. I really need to sleep."
"You left our bed out of nowhere to go God knows where and all you say is that you're tired?" She says bitterly.
"Please? Just a little bit of sleeping and I'll explain everything after."
Rachel closes her eyes, exhales soundly, and then she nods.
"Fine."
"Come with me?" She stretches her hand to her girlfriend. Rachel bites her lip looking at Quinn's hand for while until she finally decides to hold it.
They walk holding hands to their bedroom. As soon as they get there Quinn takes off her shoes and clothes quickly, and not bothering to put something else she lies on bed with only her panties. Rachel does the same and lies closer to her girlfriend, spooning her right away. It didn't take long and Quinn is in a deep sleep.
As God as her witness; she fell asleep last night thinking about how she wanted to make an effort to be more open about Jenny rather than just tolerate the young actress. Clearly, something or someone out there is working hard as to make her already low opinion regarding Quinn's friend to decrease even more.
Rachel holds the blonde tighter, kisses her girlfriend's neck and closes her eyes as well.
A few hours ago…
She gets inside her house slamming the door behind her. She is alone, once again she is alone. How can she live like this? She is so stupid, she is a stupid bitch. Nobody in this fucking world loves her.
She sits on her couch and tilts her neck to rest her head on it. She closes her eyes forcibly. Her thoughts are so loud. Is anyone hearing it too? Of course not! She is alone! Breath, that's it, slowly. Yes, that's good, taking a deep breath. Releasing the tension.
Music! She needs music and alcohol, yeah, she definitely needs alcohol.
They only tolerate you.
Yep she needs lots of alcohol.
She stands up and walks toward the kitchen. No longer after and she has a bottle of whisky in her hand. She opens it and drinks a big gulp. Who needs glasses?
You're just like your father!
She gets back to the living room and turns on her stereo. The music fills the silent house as she walks toward her bedroom drinking the now half empty bottle.
A fucking alcoholic…
In her bathroom after she makes a mess, broking flasks and throwing things on the floor, she finally takes what she was looking for and gets back downstairs. On one hand the whisky bottle and on the other hand her pills. The antidepressant pills were recommended by her psychologist, the one she goes since she was eighteen and prescribed by a psychiatrist.
She lifts her hand and analyzes the pill box. She takes one pill and swallows.
"That's it?"
"You're a very anxious person. This will help you with this. Is really nothing, there's nothing wrong with you. We just don't want that happening again okay?"
"Really doc...No one cares."
"That's not true Jenny."
Back in the living room she sits on the couch again, grabbing her purse she starts looking for her cigars. She takes one and lights it out, she drinks more and places the bottle on the coffee table.
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe we'll meet again
She sings along.
Can you imagine a time
When the truth ran free?
The birth of a song
The death of a dream
Closer to the edge
Jenny stares at her purse again as she is pondering what she is going to do. She sifts through her purse and when she finally finds what she was looking for she places it on the coffee table. She frowns angrily at the thing then she takes the bottle and drinks another big gulp. With her legs trembling frenetic, she bites her nails anxiously. Ultimately she decides to ignore the white thing in front of her.
She exhales heavily. She is just a little tense. She will not do it again. She is stronger than that. She starts dancing and singing again. Uncoordinated and drunk.
This never ending story
Paid for with pride and faith
We all fall short of glory
Lost in our fate
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe We'll meet again
No I'm not saying I'm sorry
One day, maybe We'll meet again
No No No No
I will never forget
No No
I will never regret
No No
I will live my life
No No No No
I will never forget
No No
I will never regret
No No
I will live my life
Closer to the Edge
Closer to the Edge
Jenny takes the pills on the couch and opens the box. That's all she needs. What the doctor said about alcohol and the pills? It doesn't matter anyway. She takes one pill and swallows with a good amount of whisky. She was just doing what her doctor said. Although she is pretty sure she shouldn't be taking three pills or was it six?
Her head is spilling and her hand sweaty when she takes her phone. She barely manages to dial the number.
Quinn was sleeping already, but fortunately her phone was placed on the nightstand right beside her. She wakes up startled and takes her phone. Usually these kinds of calls mean two things: stupid drunk friends or bad news.
"Hello?" She whispers as she doesn't want to wake up Rachel in case it is the first option.
"Uh… Quinn?"
"Jenny?"
What seems to be the case.
"You're drunk and you're calling me? It's 2 am Jenny."
"I'm not…"
Something about Jenny's voice puts her in alert mode. Quinn doesn't know much about Jenny's past. She knows she has a complicated one though. Well, this is about to change.
"What's wrong jenny?" She says sweetly.
"I'm not feeling well."
"Why not?" Quinn stands up carefully. "Do you want me to come over?"
"That would be great… But I… I think I'm not going to last much longer…" She whimpers dramatically. Quinn gasps.
"Jenny? Jenny talk to me. What's going on? Where are you?"
"I'm home…" She says with a barely there voice.
"Wait there, I'm coming."
She finds a random shirt puts some jeans and walks downstairs without making any noise. In her way to Jenny's house she calls Daniel, Jenny's ex boyfriend and explains what just happened.
"What's going on?" He asks concerned as he arrives at Jenny's house.
"Open the door." Quinn demands seriously. "I'm trying to call her and she doesn't answer. Do you have something to do with this breakdown?"
The way his face contorted into a look of guilty, she knows he has something to do with this.
"Just open the door."
He gets close to the door and digits the security code.
"She didn't change it." He sighs.
"I know. That's why you're here."
They walk inside and they confirm what they were thinking right away. Jenny is laying on the floor near the couch, the bottle and the pills thrown haphazardly on the floor.
"Jenny!" Quinn shouts and gets close to the young woman.
"Oh Fuck! I can't believe you did this!" Daniel is in despair.
"Oh god… What have you done?" She holds her friend and notices that Jenny is shaking, eyes looking at nowhere. The young actress is mumbling random words. She is hallucinating and Quinn knows they must be quick.
"We need to take her to the hospital." She says to Daniel.
"Okay." He lifts her off the floor.
"I'm good here." Jenny complains. "I don't want to go…"
"Jenny, Jenny we have to go sweetie." Quinn says as they walk out of the house and into Quinn's car.
In the hospital and after Jenny was sent to the emergency proceedings, she tries to calm down Daniel despite her utter dislike on him.
"We had another fight." He bursts out as they settle on the waiting room.
"Let's just wait here. Jenny needs us. Let's pray for her."
"You don't understand I said horrible things."
She sighs impatiently.
"So you need to say sorry to her. She will be okay, you'll see."
He nods sadly.
"Why were you fighting? I thought it was over between you guys."
"We were cool, hanging with friends... It was after she received a call, her mother…"
Quinn frowns slightly but keeps listening.
"They were arguing, I could tell cause Jenny was angry. Anyway, I asked about her mother you know how she is, she got mad at me and called me names, I said she was a bitch and that's why we broke up, she said she didn't need me she could have anyone she wanted and then…"
"What?"
"I said she was a fucking alcoholic just like her father."
"YOU WHAT!"
"I said it was horrible."
"You're an asshole! What's wrong with you?"
"She said I was a fucking junkie!"
"I don't know why you guys were hanging together in the first place. You're both fucking babies! I think is pretty clear now that you need to stay away from her."
"That's not all." She sighs. "I said she was lucky to have me cause her friends only tolerates her."
"Dan, you're an asshole but you didn't force her to do anything. I'm going to call her mother. You don't have to stay. I think is best if you go."
"But my car…"
"Take a cap."
Soon after the doctors informed she was out of risk, Daniel left the hospital. No longer after Mrs. Rodriguez arrived.
"Hi Quinn."
"Hi Mrs. Rodriguez."
"Gabriella. Please, call me Gabriella."
Quinn nods with a half smile.
"What happened?" The woman shrugs melancholic.
And then Quinn tells everything that happened. The woman listens carefully, only nodding sporadically.
"You're a good friend. It's something not usual in this business; since she was a teenager Jennifer has a tendency of choosing the worst kind of people to be related. I called her early, she was with him." Gabriella says with disdain.
"I know. Daniel told me."
"He was here?" The woman gets shocked.
"Yeah… he told me they had a fight." Quinn gets thoughtful. "Do you think she tried to…" She trails off.
"I don't know."
"Maybe she was just I don't know… It's her pills right? She was drunk… maybe it was just a misunderstanding."
"It can be. It's not the first time though."
"What you mean?"
"She never told you?"
Quinn didn't have to answer as Gabriella could see she was unaware of her daughter's past.
"She doesn't like to talk about her past." The blonde finally says.
The woman nods.
Gabriella Rodriguez is a forty seven years old attractive woman. Actually if it wasn't the fact that they are very alike, it would be hard to tell that Gabriella was Jenny mother as she doesn't look as a mother of a twenty five years old young woman. They are really alike indeed Quinn noticed it in the first time she's saw the woman, but Jenny has her father's eyes, the decadent Hollywood director John L. Collins. J. Collins as he is called is best known for her acclaimed movie, "Sweet goodbye" filmed in the end of the 80's. In 1993 the then thirty five years old John Collins was in Mexico filming a movie when he met the then twenty one year old Gabriella Rodriguez. He was married with the famous Hollywood actress Angie Miller. It was a scandal of course. Every gossip magazine reported that.
Jenny was born in U.S. after John and Gabriella turned their relationship official that is after John's divorce. Her mother made sure she had a "normal" life, which means far away from the glamour of Hollywood. Jenny is actually a New Yorker, the city where her father also was born. And in fact he hates the California glamour and the life style of his Hollywood peers. If it was nowadays his friends would say he was a hipster. He married Gabriella two years after Jenny was born. It was a simple ceremony as he is a very reserved man. All his friends know that when he is not on the set filming, he is in her apartment focused in his creation process.
She had a normal childhood; it was only in her teenager years that her problems began. When she was fourteen their parents got divorced, when she was fifteen she found out about her father alcohol problem and when she was eighteen, covered in blood and laying in her bedroom's floor, her mother found her with a large amount of cocaine. Rehab and then she started her appointments with her psychologist. Less than six months after the first time she took it and she no longer felt the need to keep taking her pills.
In the moment Jenny decided to try a career as an actress she had to deal with the pressure of the critics saying she was only there because of her father. She was twenty one, and she got back to the pills.
"Yeah… I know how it is…"
Quinn says melancholic.
They wait and wait but then Gabriella says Quinn should go and rest. It is already pass 8AM. They say good bye and Quinn promises she will be back soon. When she gets home she receives a call from Daniel. She is really not in the mood for him. She finds Rachel in the kitchen and as she wants to properly tell everything she thinks it is better if she rests fist.
Present Time…
She wakes up, slowly opens her eyes and lifts her head, she is alone. She sees Rachel's lap top in standby on the bed. She needs to pee. When she gets out off the bathroom Rachel is walking in. The singer has a glass on her hand.
"Hi." Rachel says sweetly.
"Hi." Quinn replies with a lazy smile.
"Here. I though you wouldn't be into eating so I made this. It's a recipe I took on the internet."
Quinn glances at the lap top.
"It's an anti-stress thing. Very good, I tasted."
"Thanks." Quinn leans forward and kisses her girlfriend, and then she sits on the bed.
"You're welcome." Rachel does the same.
"What were you doing?" The blonde says as she sips her juice. And as Rachel is confused she points to the lap top placed on the bed.
"Oh… that… just, random stuff… I was concerned about you."
"Jenny is in hospital." She says calmly.
Rachel frowns, waiting for Quinn to continue.
"Apparently an overdose of antidepressant mixed with a good amount of alcohol."
"Oh…" She gets shocked.
"She called me in the middle of the night. I didn't want to wake you." The Broadway star nods eyes glued on Quinn.
"Anyway, when I got in her house she was laying on the floor. She was… bad."
Then Quinn tells her everything else. Rachel doesn't know what she should think of all this. She is sure she cares about her girlfriend more than anything, so she is going to be there for her in any way she can.
"I'm going to see her later. I promised her mother."
"Okay. I can come if you want."
The blonde nods as she places the now empty glass on the nightstand.
"The media?"
"Her mother is taking care of this. She is an amazing woman. You'll like her."
After a while they ended up nestled on bed. Rachel is once again cuddling her girlfriend.
"They do stay together."
Rachel says after a moment of a peaceful silence.
"Hm?"
"Lucy and Rachel."
"What are you talking about?"
"You said on Beth's birthday that Lucy doesn't get her Rachel. But it's not true. She does. They end up together."
"No." Quinn shakes her head. "They don't. I'm sure."
"Baby, I just watched the movie. You know… it was one of the random stuff." She smiles. Quinn sits up and looks at her girlfriend.
"But baby, I'm sure-"
"Trust me." Rachel says as she crosses her arms behind her head.
"But frannie…" She bites her lip. "Oh…"
"What about Frannie?"
The blonde draws her lips into her mouth as she is looking at nothing in particular.
"2006 I guess… Frannie invited some friends over. I was ten years old. Mom and dad weren't home."
She rubs her forehead as if she is trying to remember that day.
"They were going to watch movies and Frannie said the TV on the living room was better. It was friday and mom and dad were out. But she never allowed me to stay around of course. I was in my bedroom. Then I heard them yelling and came to see what that was all about. Apparently they had finished the first movie and were arguing about what would be the second one."
Flashback:
"What are you guys doing?"
"Nothing! Lucy, what are you doing here?"
"I heard you guys. I thought you were fighting."
"Okay. We're not. Now Leave."
"Fran… don't be mean. She is your sister."
Taylor one of the friends (there were three) says smiling at Quinn. The little Quinn always liked this one.
"So?" Frannie turns to the others. "Guys it's Taylor's choice now." She rolls her eyes.
"But…" One of the girls complains.
"Not but, these are the rules. If she wants to watch this lesbo movie… so…" She shrugs.
"What's a lesbo?" Little Quinn asks.
"Ugh. Lucy you're such a nerd. Lesbo is a girl who likes girls."
Quinn arches her brows puzzled.
"What it means?"
"It means she doesn't like boys." Frannie huffs irritated.
"I don't like boys." She fixes her glasses. Taylor laughs amused.
"You're too young to like boys." The older sister says smiling.
"Luce doesn't like boys either." Taylor shows the DVD box to Quinn. "In this movie there's this girl Rachel and she is about to marry a guy but…" She smirks. "But then she falls in love with Luce."
"Okay enough talking." Frannie says and glares at her sister.
As Quinn gets back to her bedroom the four girls start the movie, but a couple of hours after she goes downstairs again because she is hungry.
"What are you doing here again?" Frannie asks. The movie is over and the girls are searching for another one.
"I'm hungry." She drops her eyes to the floor shyly.
"Of course you are."
"Fran…" Taylor reprimands the older Fabray sister.
"The pizzas will be here soon Lucy. Girls choose the next one." Quinn starts walking towards the kitchen but she stops and turns to Taylor.
"Do they stay together in the end?"
"What are you talking about?"Frannie asks.
"Luce and Rachel."
"Oh… they-"
"No. They don't" Frannie cuts her friend off.
"I thought." Quinn gets confused.
"You thought what? Of course they don't." the older sister glares fiercely at Taylor. "It's not natural. Don't you pay attention in the sermons of the Father in church?"
Quinn nods. Of course she pays attention.
"Rachel was just confused, because she was too young. But then she realizes she really loved her fiancé, not Luce. She married him and they lived happily ever after."
"Like in the Disney movies?"
"Yeah…" Taylor lets out a sarcastic laugh.
"Yes Lucy. Every girl deserves their prince charming." She smirks. "More like the frog charming in your case." Quinn scowls upset as her sister giggles. They hear the doorbell. "It must be the pizza guy. I'm going to get it." Frannie stands up and goes toward the front door.
"Don't bother with her."
"What about Luce?"
"What about her?"
"Does she get her prince charming too?"
Taylor sighs dreamy.
"Kind of and don't worry you will get yours too. It won't be a frog. It will be a tall and handsome prince."
They laugh.
Now:
Thanks to Noah Puckerman she got rid of said prince. She was never into the predictable endings anyway. By the way, said prince was never into her. He was more like her competition.
"Frannie was always an idiot."
"She is your sister love."
"So?"
Rachel laughs.
"Okay I get it. Frannie lied to you and told you they didn't end up together. But you never watched the movie after that?"
"Well, you didn't watch it either."
"I watched it now."
"Haha." She smiles. "But I did watch it."
Rachel gets confused.
"Kind of… anyway, I was watching it on my computer, but mom got home… I don't know, you know how my house was. I didn't finish it."
The singer giggles.
"So that's why you were under the impression that Luce didn't get her Rachel."
"Yes, to me Luce would never get her Rachel. Rachel married her fiancé."
They look at each other intensely.
"You were dreadfully wrong." The brunette gets closer. "How could she marry him?" She kisses her girlfriend passionately. "I was in love with you."
So? Don't be shy talk to me.
An author's note: I wanted to show some Frannie and Quinn interaction for quite some time but never felt like it. Luckily the "imagine me and you" little misunderstanding helped me :)
By the way is someone going to watch "la vie d'adele" (blue is the warmest color)? If so, please be a good art connoisseur, don't go expecting the typical "Hollywood way of telling stories" nothing wrong with that, they are good too, but anyway just be open about the other ways out there.
Next: Rachel and jenny confrontation. For real this time. Promise.
The song! I forgot...
Closer to the edge by 30 seconds to mars.
