In the weeks following Marisol's death things had changed dramatically. Morning sickness had settled in and decided that it would like to stay permanently. Bella spent more time hugging the toilet in the employee bathroom at Newton's than she did behind the counter most days. She was starting to feel like Linda Blair in the Excercist. Mr. Newton had sent her home early two days last week because she was starting to scare the customers.

She was only a week shy of being three months pregnant and if this was how the next six months were going to be than she was getting her tubes tied when this was over. Her boobs were so sore that she couldn't sleep on her stomach or sides because it put unwanted pressure on them. Pretty soon she would have to go up a cup size. She was moody and irritable by the time Paul got home most nights. He wasn't used to seeing her like this so every time her defenses went up so did his and she usually stormed off slamming the bedroom door behind her.

She didn't like that she flew off the handle so easily. The smallest things would set her off. Paul had been eating ice cream the other night and as he was known to do he scraped his spoon against the side of the bowl to get the last little bit of ice cream and chocolate syrup. With every swipe of the spoon Bella cringed in annoyance. It had boiled over and they'd argued for five minutes before she'd stormed off crying.

Every time he tried to reason with her she would push him away. He'd give her space and then she would complain that he was ignoring her. He was at a a loss as to what to do. He couldn't talk to anyone else because there was no one who understood what he was going through.

They had been fighting off and on all afternoon when he finally left so that he could clear his head. Bella was hunched over sobbing in the chair in the front room when the door opened only five minutes after he left. A thin arm draped over her shoulders and the smell of cinnamon enveloped her. Had Sue heard them arguing?

"It's alright, let it out," Sue said soothingly.

"I don't know what to do," Bella sobbed.

"There are lots of things that you can do. You just need to decide what works for you," she rationalized.

"Like what?"

"Well, when I was pregnant with Leah I was exactly like you; so I speak from experience. Harry was a saint compared to Paul and I'm surprised that he's been able to control his temper as well as he has."

"He's stubborn as a mule," Bella muttered.

"Things have changed since I went through this so I did some research for you. There's a prenatal yoga class at the rec center that you can join. Or you can join a book club or take up knitting. All of these are sure fire ways to keep your stress level down. Or you're going to have to learn to walk away before things get too bad."

"Prenatal yoga? Do you realize who you're talking to?"

"It's different than regular yoga and it's a great way to clear your head and release your negative energy. My niece is in the beginners class so you wouldn't be going alone," Sue reasoned.

"What about my morning sickness?"

"I have just the thing," she said, reaching into her bag.

She pulled out a sachet bag of tea leaves and the smell of mint was welcoming.

"It's mint and ginger root. I drank it through both of my pregnancies and it works wonders."

Bella smiled her thanks as Sue sat the bag on the coffee table. She sat on the arm of the chair and Bella wrapped her arms around Sue's middle before placing her head in her lap. Sue was right, she needed to go about things differently. They weren't solving anything by yelling at each other day in and day out. Something had to change.

Paul didn't like the idea of going to Billy for help, but if he was going to find a second job Billy would be the one to help him find work. Luckily, Jacob wasn't home. The two of them weren't on the best terms right now. The kid had stuck his nose where it didn't belong for the last time. He understood that Bella felt that she owed Jacob something for all that he had done for her but he didn't owe the kid jack shit.

He knocked on the door and could hear footsteps almost immediately. The door swung open and one of the twins stood in front of him. He had never been able to tell them apart since they looked so much alike.

"Who is it, Rachel?" Billy called from inside.

"It's Paul, Dad."

Billy came out of his room and Rachel opened the door wider then stepped aside to let Paul in. She slipped out the door then closed it behind her. Paul looked at the floor with his hands shoved inside his pockets. Billy motioned towards the living room with his head and Paul followed him silently.

"I heard Sue came and talked to Bells yesterday."

"Yes Sir," Paul said with a nod.

"Can't say I blame her. There were times when I could hear the two of you," he said giving Paul an even look.

Paul sat on the couch looking down at his hands. He hadn't liked fighting with Bella but to know that most of the reservation knew what was going on embarrassed him more than anything his mom had ever done to him.

"Did you need something, or did you come over so I could chew you out?" Billy asked to break the silence.

"I was wondering if you knew of anybody that was hiring."

"Did you lose your job with Sam?"

"No Sir, I'm looking for a second job so that Bella can focus on school and the baby."

"That's real nice of you, I'm sure Charlie would appreciate it too; even if Bella doesn't."

"She'll come around."

"Let me make some calls and I'll get back to you," Billy said with finality.

That was Paul's cue to leave. He had done what he came over to do and Billy had agreed to help him. That was more than he could ask for.

Bella threw all of her energy into school, which wasn't much. The prenatal yoga class that she had signed up for met three times a week in the basement of the only church on the reservation. She'd only been to three classes but she did feel more at peace and was able to tackle situations with Paul better. She was halfway through her first semester and she needed to start thinking about what classes she wanted to take next.

She would hold off on starting her next semester until after the baby was born and she felt comfortable enough leaving it for a few hours. Paul's sudden change in attitude the other night made her think that he was planning something; something that she wouldn't approve of.

Someone knocked on the door while she typed up her psychology paper. She yelled for them to come in since she had finally found a comfortable position. Jacob poked his head in and she waved for him to come in. He sat on the floor in front of the chair Indian style while she finished the paragraph she was typing.

"Thank you for coming to get me," she said as she saved her paper.

"Where's Paul?"

"He took off after dinner and said he wouldn't be back until late."

"So, what are we doing tonight?"

"I need to go grocery shopping and I can't walk back with it all since we're out of almost everything."

"You ready?"

She nodded as she shut down her computer then grabbed her purse and grocery list from off the island. The ride to the store was silent and they were both content to just be be in each other's company. As they neared Dixon's bar Bella saw something that she couldn't believe.

"Jake, pull over," she said quickly.

He did as she asked and she opened the door before they came to a complete stop. Her and Paul's beat up Ford Explorer was parked by the door. She checked the license plate just to be sure.

"What in the hell is he doing here?" Jacob asked from behind her.

"I don't know, but I'm gonna find out."

She strode through the gravel parking lot with Jacob passing her easily.

"No, this isn't your fight Jake. I can handle it," she protested.

"Are you sure?" he asked, stopping halfway to the door.

She nodded before continuing on. The music from inside the bar vibrated through her. By the time she got to the open door she was seething. Why would he be here? He swore that he'd never come here since it was his mom's bar of choice when he was growing up. Her eyes scanned the smoke filled bar, starting with the booths, then the dance floor before searching the bar. She found him behind the bar pulling beer from a tap. He placed the mug in front of someone and they nodded their thanks. She had to get out of there.

She turned on her heel and booked it back to the car where Jacob was waiting. He waited for five minutes before he said anything.

"What happened?"

"Nothing," she mumbled.

"Was he in there?"

She nodded with a sigh.

"Do you want me to go in there and beat some sense into him?"

"No, just take me home."

"What about your groceries?"

"I'll call the store in the morning and have them delivered. Take me home, please?" she pleaded.

"Yeah, okay," he agreed.

He waited until she was inside before pulling away. He knew that he shouldn't interfere in what was going on but that didn't mean that his heart didn't go out to his best friend. He hoped that the two of them were able to resolve things without doing any more damage than they'd done to their already fragile relationship.

It was almost three when Paul crept into the house. Bella was sitting up in bed when he tiptoed through the front room. She turned on her bedside lamp as he crossed over the threshold of their bedroom. He stopped in his tracks, his eyes wide. She looked at him evenly as she stood from the bed. She crossed to him slowly then wrapped her arms around his waist. He reeked of stale smoke and beer.

"When were you going to tell me that you got a second job?"

"How'd you find out?"

"Answer my question first," she said aggressively.

"I didn't know how to tell you. Do you think I want to work there?"

"Why are you working there then?"

"Why am I the only one who has to answer questions?" he asked, roughly pulling her arms from around him.

"I asked Jake to run me to the store tonight and I saw the jeep out front."

"Of course Jake knows," he said, fuming.

"All he knows is that the jeep was there. Why are you working there if you swore to me that you'd never set foot in there?"

"I didn't have a choice Bella. I've applied for six jobs in the past week and they were the only ones who called back."

"That doesn't explain why you're working there."

"We need the extra money. You're not gonna be able to work in a couple of months and after the babies born you'll need to take care of it and focus on school."

"You're working there so I don't have to work?" she asked as realization set in.

"Yes," he said with a muted sigh.

She wrapped her arms around him again, placing her head on his chest.

"I'm sorry for not telling you," he said into her hair.

"It's okay, just don't keep me out of the loop again."

"I love you," he whispered.

She kissed the hollow of his throat in reply. Things were far from worked out, but it was a step in the right direction.

Paul's complete turn around continued when he mentioned that he had applied for a loan so that they could add on to the house. Bella thought it was a good idea since their single bedroom was not big enough to include a baby plus everything that went with it. They would add a second room on the other side of the front room and it would take less than two months if Sam and his crew worked on the weekends when Paul was working at the bar. Paul didn't want it to take away from the work they were already doing. With winter coming, Paul wanted the room finished before colder weather set in.

Bella woke early to see Paul off the Saturday that Sam was supposed to start work on the house. She knew going back to bed was pointless so she started coffee while she waited for Sam and his crew to show up. She was working on her computer when Sam pulled up with Embry, Quil and Seth in the back. Sam, Colin and Brady climbed out of the cab and Bella met them on the porch with the plans that Paul had drawn up. The younger boys tore down the outer wall while Sam, Quil and Embry measured the space.

The noise was already starting to give her a headache. As if he had read her mind Jacob showed up.

"I thought that you might want to hang out at my house."

"Can you hear all of this up there?" she asked over the noise.

"Not really. You look like you could use some more sleep. Plus, you're not gonna get your homework done with all this noise," he reasoned.

"Bless you," she said, falling into him.

He smiled down at her, draping an arm over her shoulders. He pulled her out of the house after she'd gathered her things. He'd promised Paul that he'd keep her away from all the chaos. They may not see eye to eye on a lot of things but they both agreed that Bella's sanity was to remain in tact.
