Chapter 100
Lindsay told Buffy and her group about his client Russell Winters. Winters was involved in organiized crime, drugs, guns, human trafficing, helped launder money for terrorist groups. Winters even had a few legitimate businesses, whatever made him more money. Lindsay tried everything to get Winters off. But even with all of Wolfram and Hart's magickal resources they couldn't enchant the jury. Lindsay suspected that the District Attorney used his own shamans to block Wolfram and Hart's. At any rate there was no legal loophole to exploit. The jury was deliberating, likely to return a guilty verdict on Thursday. These were probably Winters' last few hours as a free man. He'd made it very clear that if he was convicted he'd say the magic word, millions would die. Lindsay believed it was literally a word he would say. Holland Manners, Lindsay's superior at Wolfram and Hart, had left town, fearing that Winters would lose. Buffy and Giles tried to figure out omething. Giles suggested killing Winters, Lindsay feared that Winters would see it coming and say the word before he died. The guardian listened, still being tied up he had little else to do. He couldn't think of a solution to their problem. The guardian noticed Ampata come into the store. She was weak, being helped in by Xander. Xander tried telling them what Ampata told him. Cursed for 1,000 years, dying, had to drain the life force from one living person or die. Buffy felt overwhelmed. She had to stop a monster from killing millions, save a cursed Inca mummy girl without killing one innocent life, and she still hadn't found Claw. Giles and Lindsay looked at each other. Without saying a word they realized that they might have a common solution to at least two of their problems.
