Chapter 124
Buffy didn't consider herself a baseball fanatic, but she liked to follow it especially this year. The Boston Red Sox had barely made it into the wild card spot. During the final days of the season they were in a tight race with the Angels. Because the Angels played their final games against the New York Yankees it was in the Red Sox best interests for the Yankees to win. The Yankees and the Red Sox had literally the oldest rivalry in baseball history. To see them root for each other was an unusual sight. The Red Sox would eventually win the pennant, but were playing the Chicago Cubs in the world series. The Cubs hadn't won the pennant since 1945 and hadn't won the series since 1908. Saturday October 20th was game one. Buffy would've loved to watch this game on tv, but she had to go out patrolling for vampires. If it was a good night, it would be uneventful. Buffy fund no dangers, but Angel found her.
Buffy: You here to warn about specific danger, or just to chit-chat?
Angel: Nothing specific, but there's something that you should know. Someone's trying to kill potential slayers. You really hurt their ranks, killed Dana, Claw. They recruited your old friend specifically for you, and it failed.
Buffy: I figure they don't have an unlimited supply of bad guys waiting in the wings.
Angel: They don't. But according to my sources they're concentrating their dwindling resources on you.
Buffy: Who are they?
Angel: I don't know. Something very powerful, very evil. They're planning something big, whatever it is they're getting worried you could disrupt it.
Buffy: My God, it all makes sense now. The Mayan calendar, Yankee fans rooting for the Red Sox. The world is really about to end.
Buffy didn't neccessarily expect Angel to laugh at her joke. But the complete lack of expression on his face worried her.
Buffy: That was a joke. The bad guys aren't really planning the end of the world? Are they?
Angel: We can't rule it out.
