Finally updating, sorry it's been so long. This one-shot is a very sensitive subject, so I'm not going to go in to much detail. However I would like to say, school shootings are one of the most horrible things in the world, and I can't begin to understand what it must feel like to lose your child/sibling/relative in one. RIP to all the angels who have been killed in a school shooting. You're in our prayers.
It had been a week since the shooting at Jamie's school. When 18 children were shot dead by a masked gun man. Jamie had never understood how it truly felt to lose someone until that day, the day he lost his best friend Liam Callaghan. That day was going to be stuck replaying in his mind for the rest of his life. There was nothing good about it, but if he had to choose a positive thing about it, he would have to say, that thanks to the school shooting his whole family completely forget about the whole drugs business. Although Jamie would go the rest of his life with his family being annoyed with him, if it meant his school mates and best friend were still here.
Jamie can remember that day vividly. Danny had arrested the shooter, before he got the chance to kill himself. He deserved to die, but in a way he deserved to suffer as well. As soon as they guy was in cuffs Danny had rushed to find him (Jamie) and as soon as he did, he hugged him for what felt like forever. Then when Jamie got home he was greeted by his whole family, all so grateful to have him home.
-Flashback--
Jamie walked through the door of his house followed by Danny, who had drove him after the days events. He had only been inside a second before his mother was hugging him with tears in her eyes.
"Oh Jamie, oh thank god, Jamie you're okay" She murmurs in to her sons hair as she hugs him tightly.
"Ma, I'm fine" Jamie says struggling to breath. She lets him go but cups her hands around her sons face and smiles through the tears. He didn't want to admit it, but all Jamie wanted to do was run upstairs, lock himself in his room and cry. Cry for all the class mates he lost, cry for Liam and most importantly cry because there was nothing he could do, they couldn't come back.
"Jamie! You're back!" Jamie looked behind his mother and saw his sister Erin, smiling at him. She extends her arms offering a hug, Jamie accepts gladly. The comfort of his older sister calmed him. Then he saw Joe next to her smiling sadly before wrapping his arm round Erin and Jamie. Before he knew it Jamie was surrounded by all three of his siblings.
Only when he pulled away did he realise there was tears dripping down his face, he tries to quickly scrub them away but everyone saw them.
"Jamie, I'm so sorry" Erin says as tears fill her eyes "Nobody should have to go through that, especially not kids"
"We heard about Liam" Joe says sadly and Jamie feels fresh tears form but ignores them "I couldn't help him, I didn't know what to do" Jamie was sobbing now.
"Jamie look at me" Danny says putting his hands on his brothers shoulders, forcing him to look in his eyes "You did everything you could for Liam, you tried to save his life, most people would have been to scared but you risked your life in front of a gun man, to try and save your best friend and I- We all have the highest respects for you" Jamie nods still crying.
Even Jamie's father had tears in his eyes when he got home and saw his youngest son, safe and well. All he could do is hug him that extra bit tighter and hope he would never lose him.
-End of Flashback-
Today was the memorial service at the local church for shooting. Jamie had been asked to say a few words in memory of his fellow class mates. He was extremely nervous, but his brothers and sister had encouraged him. So he was ready, ready to try and bring justice in the only way he knew how, by remembering them as the great people they all were.
As Jamie walked up to the front of the church, and stepped up to the small stage they had ready. He already felt ready to cry. He scanned the room, his family were at the front, slightly emotional from the previous service segment. Then he looked further back and saw families missing people, missing their children, their brother, their sister and he realised nothing matters as long as you have people who love you. All he hoped is that people knew that
The church fell silent and all eyes were at the front, Jamie cleared his throat and began.
"Wednesday November 14th was the day 20 children were shot dead at NewYork Central Highschool. Those 20 people, were my friends and one of them my best friend. I can't begin to understand why this happened, I mean why did someone feel that shooting 20 innocent kids would solve their problem? What I do know is, he has been arrested and he will never be released. He'll have to live with the knowledge he killed them, he'll hear the cries and screams, he'll see the terrified faces. He'll have to live with it all forever." Jamie felt the hot tears drip down his cheek but he carried on.
"All the families who lost someone that day, whether it be your son, daughter, brother, sister, cousin, granddaughter, grandson, you're all in our prayers as much as your lost loved ones. To all the people like me , who were lucky enough to make it out alive, never have any regrets, always love your family, friends and everything you. Because if anything this tragedy taught us, life is short and precious. To end this I want to say to you all, when you go home hug the ones you love, spend time with them and make memories because when it comes down to it, the most important this is to let the people you love know you do, because we don't know how long we have left to say it to them. Rest In Peace guys, I know you're all safe now" Jamie finishes and notices everyone was crying even his brothers had tears in their eyes, he got one of the loudest applause he had ever received, and he dedicated it to all the fallen children that were lost.
"Jamie that was beautiful, well done hunny, I'm proud of you" His mother hugs him tightly once he re-joined his faimly.
"Yeah that was nice kid, you did them all proud" Danny smiles
"Thanks, it was for them" Jamie smiles looking up at the ceiling of the church, hoping they were looking down on him and smiling.
