Buffy went to Giles for help after her conversation with Spike. From what Giles understood the Master commanded the order of Aurelius, a vampire dedicated to no less than the end of all life. The Master dissapeared 80 years ago, they'd hoped he was dead. Suppossedly the Master searched for the very mouth of Hell itself. He was believed to have been destroyed trying to open the hellmouth. According to Giles' research the Harvest was a ritual to allow a very powerful vampire to rise again. If Spike was telling the truth that indicated that the Master's plans weakened him, but he was still alive. The Harvest could revive his strength, not good for the human population. It also suggested that Sunnydale was built on the legendary hellmouth. This explained a lot, why evil things were drawn to Sunnydale. This town was a gateway to other dimensions. Buffy knew this might be a good time to work with Faith. They still didn't know if Faith could be a long-term ally. But if the Master was as powerful as the watcher's diaries suggested, none of them wanted to face him at full strength.
