Chapter 23

After Caroline left the courtyard, she ran into the bathroom attached to her and Klaus' room and began to clean the blood off of her arm in the sink. Tears were falling down her face and into the water. She never thought that Klaus would ever hurt her. He swore to her that he wouldn't let anyone hurt her, yet here she was, cleaning blood away from a mark that could kill her...a mark he made. It was caused by him and as there was a visible mark on her skin, there was an emotional one on her heart as she trusted him with it, yet he broke it. The blood from her wrist was finally cleared and as she stared at the mark for a few moments, she heard a few small knocks on the door. She then heard a sweet voice "mummy, are you okay?"

Caroline took a few steady breaths to try to stop the tears as she wiped them away. She placed a hand over her wrist so that you couldn't see the mark and only pulled it away to open the door but then it went back. Kiara was smiling at Caroline but she knew that from the way Caroline was looking at her, something was wrong. Her smile eventually disappeared and she said "mummy, what's wrong?"

Caroline shook her head with a tearful smile and said "nothing. I'm fine" she then walked past Kiara, towards the bed and grabbed a jacket that was lying there.

As she put it on, she heard Kiara gasped and she placed it on more quickly. Kiara walked towards her and stuttered "m-m-mummy, you have to go to daddy" Kiara was crying "you're hurt, he can help you". Caroline knelt down to the floor in front of her and instantly, Kiara took her hand and began to pull her towards the door. Caroline shook her head and stayed in the same position "please, mummy, please I don't want to lose you".

Caroline looked at her daughter lovingly and then pulled her into her chest and wrapped her arms around her small waist, while hers went tightly around Caroline's neck. Caroline moved one of her hands and placed it on the back of Kiara's head "my baby girl" she kissed the side of her head, and then pulled away, enough just to see her face. She then placed a hand on her face and moved her thumb up and down "my beautiful baby girl" she then placed a kiss to her forehead. She kept her lips there for a few seconds as Kiara continued to cry and when she pulled away, her hand was still on her cheek. Caroline felt tears swelling up as she looked into her daughter's eyes "you know that I love you".

Kiara shook her head as she looked down and cried "please don't say goodbye, please, mummy".

"Hey" she placed two fingers underneath her chin so that Kiara looked at her "I'm not saying goodbye, not now, not ever. The day that I came here, I gave myself to you and your father for the rest of eternity and I don't plan on leaving till then...your father has just done something that he shouldn't have done and" Caroline didn't know how to phrase it without upsetting her more "...if you trust me then believe me when I say that I will go to your father in a couple of hours but he has to learn to do the right thing".

Kiara stopped crying but she still had tears falling down her cheeks. Caroline wiped them away and Kiara said "promise? Promise me you'll go to daddy?"

"I promise" they both then hugged and Caroline picked Kiara up and Kiara wrapped her legs around Caroline's waist.

Downstairs, after Bonnie poured the blood onto the table and said the spell, they all waited anxiously for the blood to separate. The blood separated into separate circles to show that they were separated from Klaus but there was one missing. They all looked at Bonnie and Klaus said "what happened?"

Bonnie was glancing around looking at the blood and her Grimoire then placed a hand above the blood that wasn't separated. She closed her eyes for a second but then pulled away and said "everyone is separated from your bloodline but Caroline".

"Why?" Klaus sneered but then shouted "why didn't it work?"

"It...It" Bonnie then sighed "it didn't work because you and Caroline are mates".

"Mates do not affect vampire's only werewolves".

"This time it does. Have you and Caroline blood shared?"

Klaus was silent for a moment as he didn't know if Caroline would want her friends to know. After a few moments of silence he said "what does it matter?"

"I take that as a yes. You being a werewolf has made Caroline your mate but by blood sharing it has increased the connection you both share. No matter what magic I use, I can't break the connection you have. It's like...it's like your vampire mates".

Klaus froze in that moment as biting Caroline was for nothing and he regretted it more. A part of Klaus was overjoyed that Caroline was his mate in both his werewolf and vampire side but another part of him wanted to scour the earth to find something or someone that could break the link so that she didn't have to die if he did.

For two hours, Kiara and Caroline had been lying down on Caroline and Klaus' bed and Kiara was snuggling into Caroline's side. Caroline had an arm wrapped around her and it was the arm that had been bitten. Kiara had rolled up Caroline's sleeve slightly and began to trace the bite. At first, Caroline wanted to pull away as it brought tears to her eyes to see her daughter unhappy but she couldn't. As Kiara was tracing the mark, Caroline noticed the look on her face, the look of hope. Hope that the mark would vanish instantly and all would be okay. Caroline couldn't deny her daughter hope.

After a few moments, they both heard a nock on the door and sat up as the door opened. Klaus entered the room and he had his head down slightly and when he saw his girls, he gave them a small smile. They both sat up on the bed and looked at Klaus but as Caroline and Klaus stared at each other, Kiara had tears coming to her eyes again as she said "daddy, are you here to heal mummy?"

Caroline ran a hand through Kiara's hair to try and comfort her and Klaus said "if she lets me".

Caroline opened and closed her mouth but then looked at Kiara and said "Kiara, I think its time for bed".

Kiara shook her head and said "I don't want to leave you".

"Its okay, its okay. I'll be fine" she tried to reassure her daughter "go get auntie Rebekah to read you a bedtime story and I'll be there when you wake up in the morning, okay?" Kiara hesitated before she nodded. Caroline then placed a kiss to her forehead and said "I love you".

"I love you too, Mummy" she then kissed Caroline's cheek and jumped off the bed. As she walked towards the door, Klaus kneeled down and they hugged. Kiara then whispered into his ear "I don't want to lose her, daddy".

Klaus felt a tear land on his shoulder and he patted Kiara's back and whispered "I don't either and we won't. Not if I have anything to do with it".

"I love you, princess" he then kissed the side of her head.

"I love you too, daddy" she then pulled away and looked between Klaus and Caroline for a moment before she left the room, leaving Klaus and Caroline alone.
