The Fosters

Lena rolled over as she felt sun on her face. She rubbed her eyes and glanced at the clock it was only eight am. Four hours of sleep but she knew she wouldn't be going back to sleep. She stretched and realized that Callie was no longer beside her. Maybe that's what really woke Lena was Callie getting out of bed. She sat up and rubbed hr eyes. She smiled when she realized Stef had moved to the air bed at some point with Mariana.

Not that she blamed her three in their bed was do able but not the most comfortable now they had the adjustable bed from her mother. The person in the middle kind of ended up sleeping on a crack as it was really two separate mattresses.

"Darn internal clocks" Stef grumbled from the air bed as her arm went up to cover her eyes.

Lena yawned "That's what I was thinking."

"Lady bug climbed out bed twenty minutes ago" Stef rolled to her side to look up at Lena who had rolled to her side to look down at Stef.

"I was just wondering where she went."

"I guess she has an internal clock." She smiled as she sat up "I smell coffee, either she started some or others are awake."

Lena stretched "I think we're going to need a family nap today" She said swinging her legs over the side of the bed putting her feet on the ground. "Today is Friday" She sighed. "We are supposed to go back to school in like two and half days."

"Closer to three" She yawned "And if you and the kids really aren't ready come Monday morning. You don't have to go."

Lena grabbed her phone "I have a meeting at the school at ten. I should go."

Stef sighed "I guess I can't tell you no, but don't push yourself baby. Just listen to your body. If it's too much come home."

Lena nodded "I will, I am only going for the one meeting. All the staff is getting together to talk and maybe pray together and figure out where we go from here. How we do this on a united front."

Stef nodded "You know the kids are fine here."

Lena nodded "Think of something fun to do" She gathering her hair up and putting it on top of her head before she snapped a rubber band around it keeping it in place on the top of her head. "While our moms are here, I want to do something vacationish for the weekend. I want the kids to have a blast and keep their minds from thinking about going back to school Monday.

Stef nodded as she looked at Mariana who was stirring next to her "Another beach day" She mumbled around own arm she put over her face. That was fun and it's cheap."

"Baby girl has a point" Stef patted her daughter's stomach causing her to grunt.

"We can do another beach day" Lena agreed "But what else?"

"Mini golfing is fairly cheap too" Mariana said sitting up "And a nap."

Lena smiled "I like the way you think babe" She said as she got up and stretched "I am following my nose to coffee."

Stef nodded "You and me both."

"I am following my nose to a nice hot cup of tea" Mariana said getting up "And a yogurt."

Stef smiled "Sounds good to me." As she got climbed up off the air bed "Four hours asleep makes me feel old" She mumbled rubbing her hip bone as she followed her wife and daughter down the stairs "And not one wise crack" She warned them.

Lena let out a little gasp. "DADDY!"

Stef and Mariana hurried their paces at Lena's squeal as they walked into the kitchen to find Sturat standing at the counter flipping pancakes with one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

"Hi baby" He put down his cup and took pan off the stove for a moment just in time to catch Lena in his arms. "Oh baby"

"Daddy" She cried as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

He stood swaying back and forth with her "I am sorry, I couldn't get here sooner, I wrapped up my work and flew back to the states as quickly as I could. I knew your mother would get here until I could come."

"I was so scared" She whispered into his ears as he held her tightly still rocking her.

"I bet you were" He said softly pushing her out some and brushing his hand over her cheeks "I bet you were. I am sorry princess, but I can tell you this Lena, I have never been more proud of you."

She pulled back raising her eyebrow slightly as she wiped at a tear that had fallen

"Yes Lena" He said kissing her forehead "You didn't crumble in an emergency. You were calm and collected. You thought things out and you saved your children."

Lena looked up at him "I saved my girls" She nodded 'But I didn't save ten other children and I didn't really think about my boys" Her voice cracked "That makes me a horrible mother."

Stuart grabbed her chin and tilted it up. "Your girls with you, they were your first priority. No one else but those two" He said seriously "And Lena, you know your children, you know their schedules. You know where they are at through their day at school right?"

Lena nodded "Yes, I know my kids class schedules."

"Five whole schedules and you know them like the back of your hand don't you?" He asked as Stef snuck by them to pour herself a cup of coffee her heart melting at this father daughter moment. She watched as Lena's shoulder's went from stiff to relaxed.

"All five' Lena confirmed.

"So in the back your mind you know that the shooters were in your wing, and I believe with everything that I have you really knew that your boys had different classes that weren't anywhere near the wing you were in. You knew this so you didn't focus on worrying where they were at. You knew in your heart that they were safe. So you focused on your daughters as any good parent should do."

Lena nodded as she wrapped her arms around him again "Daddy"

"I love you princess" He kissed her cheek holding her tight to him again "I love you."

Lena pulled away after a moment and smiled "Thank you for coming Daddy"

Stuart kissed her one more time then shifted out of her arms and slipped a cup of coffee into her hands "My specialty."

She smiled "Thank you." She looked around "Have you seen Callie?"

He nodded and pointed outside "She came down greeted me, with a hug and her beautiful smile. I made her a cup of hot cocoa, since she was eyeing the coffee. She then grabbed a granola bar and headed outside with her guitar.

"Leave her be" She Stef said after a minute "Let her play with guitar. She hasn't picked up her guitar since before the shooting. It's good for her."

"Grandpa are you making your famous blueberry pancakes by chance?" Mariana asked as more footsteps could be heard on the stairs.

"I smell heaven" Jesus yawned "I was right! Grandpas here"

Jude was right behind him rubbing his eyes he smiled at Stuart before making a beeline for Lena throwing his arms around her tightly "Mama"

"Morning Jude" She kissed the top of his head. "I am sorry baby boy" She whispered into his ear "I didn't mean to scare you last night. I wasn't running away from you."

Jude nodded as he looked up at her his eyes shining bright "You wouldn't have adopted me if you didn't want to be my mama. I knew you weren't leaving us. I know this is hard on you too" He whispered "You saw people die, you saw someone threaten Callie. You had to put Mariana in a bench. I am impressed your still standing as tall as you are" He whispered "I am proud of you mama."

More tears. Lena wondered if the tears would stop. As she pulled her son close to her.

"See" Stuart winked at Lena "Your man is on the same thought train as I am. Like grandfather like grandson."

Lena laughed "Daddy."

He shrugged with a smile before turning back to his pancakes.

Lena kept her arms around Jude as she watched her dad flip more pancakes. Her relationship with her parents was unique at best. However for the first time in almost a week she felt safe. Something about having her parents here brought her back to the safe feeling she had as a child. Her eyes scanned the room taking in three out of her five children in the room with them. She prayed they felt safe right now like she did. She prayed that some day the would recall memories of her and Stef and remember feeling safe. She prayed that even after they were fully grown and they sought a hug from her that they would always feel safe in hers or Stef's arms.

Four year old Lena sat on her knees on the bench her nose pressed to the glass her hands on the windows.

She jumped every time the lightening would strike and let out a whimper.

"Lena, come down from there if it's scaring you" Her mother said from the table where she going over her checkbook.

Lenalooked at the dark clouds but stayed where she was.

"Lena, if you give yourself nightmares tonight you're going to have stay in your own bed." Dana shook her head "Lena, you are perfectly safe."

Lenaglanced back at her mother 'I know mommy"

Dana looked up "You do?"

"You're not afraid right now" She said simply "As my mommy I know that if it was something really scary you wouldn't be sitting there writing in that book. You'd do something to save me. Cause I am your baby girl"

"Are you sure you are four?" Dana shook her head with an amused smile that quickly faded when her daughter jumped with a clap of thunder.

"Come down" She said shaking her head "You're just scaring yourself."

Lenashook her head as she kept her hands on the window

"You're getting my clean windows smudged up" Dana sighed as she got up and walked over to Lena rubbing her back "Why are you sitting here?"

Lena's eyes lit up as headlights appered in their driveway "Daddy's home!" She squealed "Now he'll be safe from the storm in here with you!"

She took off running and met Stuart by the garage door.

"Daddy!"

"Princess" He smiled as he dropped his stuff on the counter and scooped her up. "Dance with me to the sound of the music the storm is playing" He said swaying her around the kitchen causing her to giggle. She'd felt safe with her mother but now she felt extra safe in her father's arms.

She looked over his shoulder and saw her mother watching them with an amused look on her face. She didn't say anything just watched the two d
