Chapter 193

As Angel walked home he could feel something, someone was watching him, stalking him. Then Angel heard it coming. By instict he turned around and caught the arrow. Angel saw the person who shot the arrow from her crossbow. No suprise, it was the potential slayer, Buffy Summers. She attacked Angel, he barely fought back, his only moves were defensive. Buffy was suprised, Angel wasn't trying to hurt her. She had heard Jenny's theory, that Angel might actually be the only vampire to ever have a soul. Maybe she'd been too rash with this. She needed answers. She incapacitated Angel and began interrogating him.

Buffy: Why dodn't you try to kill me just now?

Angel: I don't want your death on my conscience.

Buffy: Vampires don't have a conscience.

Angel: I do, for over 100 years now. You have no idea what it's like to have done the things I've done, and to care.

Buffy: So you were the one those gypsies cursed?

Angel: The Kalderdash, they were the ones who did this to me? Makes sense. I just woke up one morning, and my soul was back. And then came the guilt. I always wondered who did it.

Buffy: So if you have your soul, why did you wait so long before seeking redemption?

Angel: I never really thought it was possible, then Doyle found me. Said maybe I could be forgiven.

Buffy: By who? God?

Angel: Doyle calls them the Powers that be. None of us knows exactly what they are.

Buffy: How do I know this isn't some big trick of yours?

Angel: You don't. You're either going to have to trust me, or kill me.

Buffy: I don't trust you, but in case you're telling the truth I won't kill you, at least not yet. But if you kill a human, I don't care if it's Dexter Morgan, I'll kill you.

Angel: Fair enough.
