Chapter 207
Cordelia looked at the newborns in the nursery. She asked herself what it was all for. Harmony had done a brave thing in having this baby, and it cost her her life. The doctor was working on her, but Cordelia knew it was futile. Harmony would be dead in hours. Jesse had been brave too, and now he was a vampire, possibly damned. It seemed good people get killed, the cowards lived. It didn't seem fair. Then Cordelia saw something else unfair, Tom Warner, and his frat brothers, just walked into the nursery. They just took some of the newborns, including Harmony's baby. These men had guns, which was why the hospital staff did nothing to stop them. It occurred to Cordelia that these particular babies were born to other girls from that party. It was quite possible that these particular men were the children's biological fathers. It seemed unlikely they were concerned about their kids, even less likely they'd be good parents. No good could come from them having custody like this. Cordelia was too scared to confront them, but she called Buffy. She knew Xander was at this hospital, playing Santa Claus for the children, but she didn't know where specifically and didn't know his cellphone number. As these men took the children Cordelia quietly followed them. She was scared, but she found her courage. If Cordelia couldn't save Harmony, maybe she could save her baby.
