Chapter 255
Congressman Smith was a staunch conservative who'd questioned whether global warming was real. He oppossed President Wilkins' environmental bill, although they mostly agreed on foreign policy. When Wilkins invited Smith to the White House on Saturday January 26th Smith accepted. The president was having a miniature golf course built here and invited Smith to play a few holes here. They began talking about the environmental bill, Wilkins knew if he could get Smith to support it this would help get the bill passed, and be an early victory for the Wilkins administration.
Smith: Sorry Mr president. But this bill is just big government over-stepping it's authority.
Wilkins: Global warming is a threat to this planet, all of your descendants would be in danger.
Smith: I'm not convinced by this so-called science.
Wilkins: Too bad. If you helped me, I could help you get re-elected next year.
Smith: The people of my district like me, I've won enough elections to be comfortable. As long as I keep voting for lower taxes they'll keep re-electing me.
Wilkins: I take it you have no interest in te Senate seat next year.
Smith: I' ve spent more than two decades becoming a big fish in my little pond.
Wilkins: Fair enough. How's your granddaughter, she and her mother came for a visit recently right?
Smith: Yes. They're fine Mr president.
Wilkins: Hope she likes her new rubber ball.
Smith: How did you know about that?
Wilkins: It was a gift from my daughter Faith. Four year olds are so trusting.
Smith: What are you implying?
Wilkins: Nothing. Jus seems like it might be so easy for a dangerous predator to hurt her. How many abductions are there every year? It's a good thing no predator has gone near her. Now, let's talk about the bill.
