Chapter 15: Their good bye?
Ussop pulled Sanji into the kitchen, slamming the door behind them as he did; he hoped Zoro hadn't chased after them in a fit of anger and blind rage at him for pulling the blonde away from one of their fights.
After a few moments and happily declaring that the swordsman had not followed, Ussop quickly turned away from the door and around to see the back of Sanji.
He silently watched him breath in and out deeply, attempting to calm himself down before taking out another cigarette and lighting it with a flick of his lighter, breathing in deeply; letting out a long stream of swirly smoke.
Ussop watched in curiousity, somewhat knowing exactly what the blonde cook was thinking right now. He didn't know what had just happened, but to Ussop it seemed like Zoro was being immature and childish about something he had done and yet he didn't know what!
Clearly Ussop was being picked on, he should be the one upset here!
"I'm not mad…" Sanji finally spoke, slowly turning to face Ussop, a fake dangerous smile upon his face, sending shivers down Ussop's spine.
"I'm not mad that he gave it to Luffy…"
Ussop gulped, Sanji's words were saying something completely different than the forced expression on his face as well as his tapping leg that was so obviously itching to kick something.
Sanji stomped away from Ussop; into his kitchen and into the storage, walking back and forth as he gathered his ingredients to prepare for lunch.
"Its not like it was originally mine…" He took another smoke, "Damn that shitty marimo…"
Ussop listened carefully as Sanji began to cut, the knife clinking against the board, its pace increasing and the sound of cutting growing louder…until it suddenly stopped. Sanji sighed heavily as depression suddenly washed over him, the anger disappearing with his energy.
"Why am I the only one hurting?" He whispered quietly as he began to continue his previous ministrations.
Ussop sighed sadly as well, turning to face the door and leave the room, allowing Sanji to be alone with his own thoughts.
Meanwhile, Zoro had jumped from the ship and began slicing angrily at the air, the sea and the sand in an attempt to quell his anger. The rest of the crew watched in mild fear as Zoro ran amuck like he was a tyrant; not wanting to disrupt him and face his wrath, they watched from a far, not daring to say anything more. After all Zoro had practically almost wanted to kill them when they had all called him childish, which they were not going to take back at all.
The scene they had all witnessed, despite being amusing, was like… "Zoro was a ten year old boy who was jealous that the person he liked was giving someone else their treat." Nami mumbled, staring at the swordsman as he swung his sword once more.
"Yeah, Zoro likes Sanji" Luffy stated automatically, watching Zoro yell to nothing. He had a feeling his first mate did, but it was most definitely obvious now, and surely, he wasn't the only one thinking it.
"Such jealousy…" Brook nodded beside Luffy. "This would be a wonderful unrequited love song…"
"Eh, Zoro likes Sanji?" Chopper asked innocently, looking at everyone individually.
"It seems so…" Robin smiled, highly amused.
"Yup, Franky and Ussop owes me!" Nami laughed to herself, her eyes gleaming at Franky who looked just as dejected as Ussop was earlier.
"I didn't see it coming Nami-bro…" He somewhat regretted that he had betted on Zoro's sexuality. He should have known something was suspicious when Nami was willing to bet money.
"Wait wait! Zoro likes Sanji?!" Chopper asked once more, the information finally sinking in. Everyone looked at him, even Luffy as he chuckled happily.
"Why Chopper? Is something wrong?" Luffy asked him.
"No no!" Chopper quickly replied, growing quiet. Sanji likes him too! But he promised he wouldn't tell anyone. But if Zoro liked him then shouldn't he know it was reciprocated?!
"How do you all know?" Chopper mumbled quietly feeling a little left out.
Luffy smiled happily, "I'm captain and your Nakama, I do notice things."
"Robin and I have been observing. Women's intuition as well!" Nami winked.
"I saw Zoro hugging Sanji in the haunted house yo ho ho," Brook laughed, "Although I have no eyes!"
They all stared at Brook. "I was acting as the skeleton in the haunted house!"
"I…didn't know," Franky mumbled. "Until now…"
They all chuckled, turning back to watch Zoro breath in and he calm himself down, sheathing his swords away before Zoro sauntered back to the ship, receiving knowing smiles and nods from the crew who had happened to be an unwanted audience for quite sometime, an audience he wished could leave him alone.
"What?" He gruffly asked them, narrowing his eyes at them once more, but he didn't get an answer, the smiles instead widened; it was irritating him with each passing second he continued to stare at them.
He growled lowly in the back of his throat, he wasn't in the mood for another 'childish' comment from them.
Luffy patted him on his back. "I give you my approval!" Luffy laughed loudly, as long as Zoro didn't hurt Sanji, he didn't mind at all if his nakama were in love, in fact it was good.
Zoro frowned, the hell was he on about now. He really couldn't keep up with his captain, it was a lot more easier leaving his captain be and not question whatever was going on in his mind.
"We support you Zoro-bro! Super!" Franky shouted to him, posing his infamous pose as tears streamed down his face. Zoro grimaced.
"I always swore to you I'd never fall apart~You always thought that I was stronger~I may have failed, but I have loved you from the start~*"
Zoro completely blanked Brook, pretending he wasn't there at all as he began to sing some weird ass song. What was it meant to be? A sad love song?
Why the hell was it a sad love song? He was slowly having a funny feeling that they knew…
Whatever. He didn't care what his crew were on about; he walked away from them, deciding he wanted nothing to do with them at the moment.
He sighed as he looked up, suddenly bumping into Ussop who looked almost ready to faint upon seeing the green haired man that he most definitely knew had something against him right now and he still didn't know what.
Zoro sighed again, looking away from Ussop and pulling a disgusted face out to the ocean. Ussop was the last person he wanted to see, the one person he didn't want to see at all, but after his little tyrant act on land, he had decided that if he liked Sanji, if Sanji was happy with…with…Ussop…then he would give them his congrats and leave them be because, after all, they were also Nakama.
He shouldn't let his own feelings get in the way of their happiness. He had no right to try and destroy it, no matter how upset he was of the mere thought of them together instead of him. He would accept their relationship like a man.
Ussop wanted to be mad at the swordsman's reaction to seeing him but he was also a little terrified of the man and what he could do to him if he suddenly irked him. Better to not bite more than he can chew.
"Sorry, to you and the shit cook." Zoro mumbled to the sharpshooter who suddenly looked like he had just been killed by such words.
Why was Zoro Roronoa, the demon pirate hunter apologising to him? Wasn't Zoro mad at him for some unknown reason that he probably will never learn?
"I'm happy for you guys."
Ussop was sure he heard a snarl in Zoro's words but that didn't matter, what mattered was what the hell that sentence meant.
"What do you mean you're happy for us?" Ussop asked, he was completely lost in this conversation, at lost more lost than Zoro ever was when he was in a town and that meant something.
Zoro grunted. Of course, no one knew of their relationship yet. He walked away from the sniper, he didn't want to have this conversation any longer than necessary.
For two hours, the ship was quiet, there were no arguments and no fights, no instead it was another familiar feeling, something that they had felt like had happened before. Like it was deja vu…and this was because the kitchen and the crews nest had two deadly auras admitting from them from two angry and depressed men (again) who were possibly sulking over what had happened that morning and other things once more.
But for those two hours, there had also been another depressed aura surrounding a certain little doctor on the deck.
It seemed Chopper had been contemplating whether he should tell Sanji that Zoro liked him or whether he shouldn't, after all it really wasn't his secret to tell but Sanji felt the same way so he would actually be doing a good thing. Right?
Unless Zoro didn't want to let Sanji know…or what if everyone else was wrong? What if they had misinterpreted Zoro's actions of protectiveness and so Zoro didn't actually like Sanji like that? After all, no one had actually asked the swordsman of his feelings.
Chopper sighed, he didn't know what to do, it was all to confusing. Why couldn't love be simpler for Sanji? Chopper sighed once more, why couldn't there be medicine to stop a person from feeling so heartbroken, he frowned, he never wanted to see Sanji like that again. So broken, so hurt.
Ussop walked over to Chopper, kneeling down to him. He could tell the little reindeer was thinking hard on something, and so had he. Well, why not think together? But what Ussop didn't think about, was that they had both been thinking two completely different things. He had been thinking about the main concern here, which was Sanji's memories; Sanji's regrets.
"Chopper, I know you know Sanji like's Zoro but do you think Sanji's regret was that? That he didn't tell Zoro?" Ussop spoke up, alerting the reindeer that he was also there.
Chopper looked up to the sharp shooter with confusion written all over his face. "His regret?" What did Ussop mean?
Realisation kicked in and Chopper's face looked so guilty for forgetting such an important thing that should be a main concern. He had forgotten all about it.
"Robin said he would die if he completes his regret!" Chopper remembered, his thoughts matching that of Ussop's now.
"Do you think he should know that it's a possibility? No, we shouldn't tell him, if he doesn't know then he wouldn't do anything drastic…right?"
Chopper thought deeply about it, Sanji would be mad at them for keeping such a thought process from him, but when it came to Sanji he always did things drastically and that would be one of them…
Ussop shook his head, "We have to confess our thoughts, Sanji has the right to know that it could be his regret...we could tell him to forget about it, maybe he'd listen to us."
Chopper looked sadly at Ussop, "It's his decision though…" He whispered sadly, they already knew their cook would attempt getting his memories like he had done before. Ussop patted Chopper on his head, attempting to comfort him as they headed to the kitchen to confess their thoughts to the blonde.
The sweet smell of food wafting into their noses but they shook off the growing hunger; they had to remain focused on their self assigned mission.
Sanji stirred the food a few more times, not noticing the duo as he turned off the gas, humming to himself that lunch was now complete; he just had to set the table and call everyone in, even Marimo head, unless he was planning on skipping a meal again.
He frowned, he could hear Luffy and Zoro talking. What were they talking about? Maybe he should tell Zoro, get this off his chest, get the rejection and move on. Find his memories and be done with all this pain. Sounds like a good idea.
"Sanji?" Ussop and Chopper spoke, gaining the attention of the cook who turned slowly to look at them. Slightly surprised to see the two of them together just to come see him, it most definitely wasn't a coincidence that the two people he had told who he liked would come together like this. Obviously, they had something on their mind and Sanji was going to listen. He smiled comfortably at them, showing them that whatever was on their mind would be heard.
"Are you guys okay?" He asked after a few seconds passed, noticing the nervousness between the two as they had yet to speak.
"What are you going to do about Zoro?" They finally asked, stuttering slightly.
Sanji frowned and hummed slightly as he turned to get all the plates and cutlery. Well, he had thought it over already, maybe he should actually act upon his feelings. He had nothing to lose.
"I'll tell him." This was now his final decision, he wasn't going to back out from it.
Ussop looked at Sanji and frowned. "Why?"
"Even though he likes Luffy, even though I have no chance." Sanji took a pause. "I want my feelings to be heard."
Choppers eyes grew wide. "Sanji you sound so wise and grown up!" He couldn't help but contain the sparkle in his eyes. This cook was different to the stubborn Sanji they knew, but then he lost the sparkle in his eyes as he remembered why they had first came into the kitchen.
Sanji laughed, was that an insult or a compliment?
"Uh..I've been wondering for a while…" Ussop hesitantly said, he wasn't sure whether he should actually ask now or not. Maybe he should have listened to Chopper.
"Do…do you think you liked Zoro before you lost your memories?" Ussop finally asked, gulping as he waited for an answer.
"Hmm, I don't know? Does that make a difference?" Sanji asked, not quite understanding what Ussop was trying to insinuate at the moment, so what if he had liked Zoro before his lack of memories or not. Sanji finished up setting the table.
"It's just, what if not telling Zoro you liked him before you died was your regret, which would mean that woman would kill you." Ussop chuckled nervously, "but I mean, it probably wasn't like that. You guys really hated each other then."
He really hoped Sanji wouldn't do what they thought he would do…They silently prayed that it wouldn't happened.
Sanji looked up from the last spoon he had set down and stared at Ussop. Wait a moment…what if the long nosed man was right, what if it was his regret? It never really occurred to him that there was a possibility he liked him before.
"B-but," Ussop stuttered, watching Sanji's reaction closely. "If, if it is your regret then maybe it's for the best you don't confess to Zoro…"
Could he convince Sanji not to tell Zoro?
Ussop stared at Sanji's blank expression, he couldn't tell what the blonde was thinking at all right now. But it didn't seem good. His heart was beating rapidly and it was then that Ussop knew what was going to happen.
Sanji ran past them no longer thinking, but doing. He was going to do it, confess to Zoro and jump into the ocean to greet the ghost. He ran, running to Zoro upon the railing of the ship, his eyes glancing at the water.
He would be seeing her soon. He would be confessing and dying but most importantly…he would finally get what he had been longing for this entire time.
"Oi, Marimo!"
Zoro turned away from Luffy and looked up at Sanji who was standing on the railing of the ship, looking down at him. The hell was the cook doing?
"Jealousy…is so stupid," Sanji puffed his cigarette, savouring the taste, would this be his last? "and so is unrequited love…"
The wind was blowing through his blonde locks, pushing it out of the way, allowing both his sad blue eyes to look at Zoro who stared right back into his, trying to understand what Sanji was saying. Was Sanji talking about him? Did Sanji know his feelings?
"San…ji…?" Zoro asked slowly, fear creeping into him as he looked at Sanji's blue eyes, telling him something bad was to come. Was it that he was going to be horribly rejected? No, this feeling, it felt like he was going to lose the man at front of him.
"Zoro…I…" The wind blew strongly against Sanji, almost urging him off of the ship. It was picking up speed, spinning and twirling around them all.
"Sanji?" Luffy frowned, also not feeling good about this situation, what was their cook doing? He didn't like the fact the blonde was also standing on the railing of the ship with sad eyes.
"I love you, Zoro!" Sanji shouted over the howl of the wind, and just like that, just as the words were uttered, he jumped backwards with the pushing wind. Allowing it to take him into the sea, smiling at his crew, letting it be the last thing they could see of him as he watched their shocked faces coming at him in slow motion.
He was happy, he had no regrets minus all blue that is. He wouldn't forget his short time with them and he would finally remember the fun times before.
Zoro shouted loudly, attempting to reach out to him as he fell.
Why?! Why couldn't he grab Sanji? Why couldn't he move faster and closer to the railings of the ship. The wind was too strong as it pushed him back, never allowing him closer to the blonde.
He was feeling so useless again, just like when Sanji had fallen in before. Why was it so impossible to protect the shitty cook from doing stupid shit like this?! Why did the cook have to make things so hard? Why did have have to shout he loves him right before jumping?
Was he running away from Zoro? From his own feelings? Sanji was never a coward!
"Sanji!"
Why did he have to jump before Zoro could respond.
Was Sanji really going to leave Zoro regretting this moment?
Was this their good bye?
Well…that's it…that's the end of this story…
...
I joke.
The next chapter might be a little while, I have a few things I have to do.
