Thanks for the reviews guys I really appreciate you taking the time to leave one.
An overwhelming number of you wanted Ash to go home for Christmas so we're spending the holidays in Pallet Town.
It has now been a year since the first chapter of Ash's Journey Through Hoenn was published and I am honestly amazed that it's been a year since I started writing this story. I'm quite happy with how the story has developed in that time and I hope that I can keep up this standard next year. I don't really know how long it will take to finish this story as we still have 4 badges, the fall of Team Firestorm and the Hoenn League to go but I promise you that this story will be completed.
In a year this story has gathered over 500 hundred readers which is 500 times more than I was hoping for when I started to write this. I was honestly ecstatic when I got 1 follower so to hit such a huge figure is incredible so I'd like to thank all of you for following/favoriting/reviewing and I hope you continue to enjoy the story. I am hopeful that this story will keep gaining new readers and I am looking to hit at least 600 readers by this time next year which fingers crossed will hopefully be achieved.
Once again I'd like to thank you all for reading, you guys are the ones who inspire me to improve my writing and I shall try to keep giving you even better chapters.
I wanna wish you all a Merry Christmas or if you don't celebrate Christmas then Happy Holidays.
Here's chapter 40 I hope you enjoy it

"I think that is a good idea Professor." Ash said.
Professor Oak smiled at Ash, he was glad that his former student agreed with him. The worst thing he could have done would have been to carry on and in all likelihood get annihilated by Norman which would have only made Ash fall into an even worse state than he is in right now.
"I'm relieved to hear you say that Ash. I'll tell your mother that you'll be home soon, she'll be ecstatic to hear that you're coming home."
Ash let a small smile creep on to his face at the thought of his mother charging out of the door and crushing him in a bear hug.
"Yeah she will be and I'd like to spend the holidays with her."
"Good, now if you go to the police station and tell Officer Jenny what happened then you can make your way to Isaya Town and catch the ship that is headed to Slateport in three days' time. When the ship lands in Slateport you'll have a two day wait until a ship will depart which will bring you back to Kanto. Your other option is to fly on Aerodactyl straight to Slateport and catch the ship that leaves tomorrow."
"I suppose I could do that and… wait a second how did you know I needed to go to the police station? And why do you know when the ships would be in dock and when they are to depart?" Ash asked even though he was pretty sure he knew the answer.
"Officer Jenny had to contact someone to inform them of what happened to you so she called me since she didn't have contact details for your mother. When she told me pretty much everything that you had told her I thought that you would need some time to gather yourself which is why I started making plans for your return. Of course at that point I didn't know about Salem, if I had I would probably sent someone over to pick you up. Although I'm sure you'd rather have a bit of time to yourself before you get back to Pallet."
"A bit of time would be nice and oh Arceus does mum know about what happened?" Ash asked worriedly.
He knew how much his mother worried about him and hearing that he'd been captured and injured by Team Firestorm would make her panic.
"Only the bits I told her. Don't worry Ash she doesn't know about your injury or anything like that. I just told her that there was an incident with Team Firestorm and the police just wanted to inform me that you were safe."
Ash let out a relieved sigh.
"Thanks Professor I would rather tell her myself than have her panicking about it after hearing it from someone else."
"That's what I thought as well. So I should probably let you go so you can give Officer Jenny a complete report and then you can start heading to Slateport."
"Okay thanks Professor. I'll see you in a couple of weeks." Ash said.
"Take care Ash. We'll see you soon." Professor Oak said as he hung up the phone.
Ash hung up the phone and then looked at his Pokémon.
"Well guys it looks like we're spending Christmas as home in Pallet."
Everyone cheered apart from Raichu who appeared to be miles away with the same sad look on his face. Ash felt sorry for his best friend who was taking the revelation of Chu being evil even worse than he was taking the pain of finding out the truth about Salem. Ash had never thought about asking Professor Oak about what mates are to Pokémon, he had assumed that it was similar to what humans feel but judging by Raichu's behavior that wasn't the case. Ash wasn't sure what to do for Raichu, he knew that he'd need to find out more about the relationship between Pokémon mates before he tried anything. He looked at Meowth and suddenly realized that he had the perfect way to find out. He knelt down and placed his hand on Meowth's shoulder which made the cat turn his gaze to Ash.
"What is it boss?" Meowth asked.
Ash replied by glancing at Raichu and then looking back to Meowth, the cat immediately knew what Ash wanted to talk to him about and gave him a small nod. Ash quickly stood back up and looked at Vibrava, Plusle and Minun who were all stood on the table next to the phones looking back at him. Ash knew what they were waiting for and rummaged around in one of his spare pockets, he was surprised and slightly worried to find that he only had two Pokéballs left.
"I didn't think I'd dropped so low on Pokéballs. Good thing I'm heading home, I might be able to get some from Professor Oak."
He started to check his other pockets and was relieved to find a spare one hiding in the pocket he kept the G.S. Ball and Togetic's Pokéball in. He pulled the Pokéball out of the pocket and placed the trio of Pokéballs in front of Vibrava, Plusle and Minun.
"Right now are you sure that you wanna come with me?" Ash asked.
Vibrava, Plusle and Minun sighed in annoyance and tapped the buttons on the Pokéballs. They were all sucked into the Pokéballs in a flash of red and one by one they all dinged to indicate that the capture was successful. Luckily Vibrava was the first one to be captured so Plusle and Minun were sent back to the lab, Ash picked up Vibrava's Pokéball and placed it where Charizard's had been. He then headed towards the other rooms so he could see Thalion and Vanya.
Ash came to a room where the door was wide open, he peered into the room and saw Thalion lying on the bed watching T.V.
"Hey Thalion."
Thalion looked away from the T.V to the door and saw Ash standing there looking incredibly nervous.
"Hi Ash, come in." Thalion said.
Ash nodded and walked to the bed, he took a seat next to the bed and Thalion turned off the T.V. The pair sat in an awkward silence for several minutes, Ash was unsure what to actually say considering what had been said in the Team Firestorm base and Thalion was just waiting for Ash to say something.
"How are you feeling?" Ash finally blurted out.
Thalion remained silent which made Ash think that he may have made a mistake coming here.
"I'm fine, still got a little bit of a headache but I'll live." Thalion said.
Ash let out a relieved sigh and was now glad that he had chosen to come see Thalion.
"That's good. I wanted to warn you that Officer Jenny is gonna want you and Vanya to give her a report on what happened in that base."
"I know she will. Have you given her your report yet?"
"I gave her a brief version yesterday and today I'm gonna head down there and tell her everything that happened after I quickly visit Vanya. So what are you and Vanya gonna do once Nurse Joy lets you outta here?"
"Well I talked about this with Vanya earlier and we're not sure really, we'll obviously head to the police station first and then we'll decide what we do next. What about you Ash? What are your plans after you've given Officer Jenny your report?"
Ash sighed and looked out of the window; watching some Beautifly pass by.
"I'm heading home for Christmas, I need to get my head straight before I challenge Norman. I'm gonna head to Slateport and then I'll try to catch the earliest ship back to Kanto."
"That's understandable Ash. Before you go I would like to apologize."
Ash looked from the window to Thalion with confused expression.
"Why are you apologize?"
Thalion looked away from Ash guiltily.
"For what I said after Vibrava helped us out of the cell. I was out of order, I shouldn't have said that and I just want you to know that if I could go back and change what I said, I would do. I was just so worried about Vanya that I just wanted something to blame everything on and you were the nearest person that I could blame."
Ash placed his hand on Thalion's shoulder which made the older Robo sibling look at him.
"It's okay Thalion I completely understand why you acted that way. I'll see you later."
"All right Ash."
The pair shook hands and gave each other a respectful nod. Ash then walked out of the room and headed towards Vanya's room.
Ash arrived at Vanya's room a few minutes later, he stopped and thought about what he was going to say before he finally knocked on the door a couple of times and waited for a response.
"Come in!"
Ash opened the door and quickly closed it behind him, he looked at the bed and saw a pyjama clad Vanya smiling at him.
"Ash!"
The girl leapt out of bed and charged Ash, she slammed into him which made him stagger back into the door. Ash groaned in pain and then felt Vanya wrap her arms around him tightly, he sighed in content and returned the embrace. Vanya snuggled into Ash's embrace and smiled; she felt safe in his arms and would be more than happy to stay like this.
"Hey Vanya. How are you feeling?" Ash asked softly.
Vanya moved her head so she was looking at Ash and smiled at him brightly.
"I'm fine thanks, how are you?
"I'm all right I guess." Ash said.
Ash then looked at the Jigglypuff pyjamas that Vanya was wearing and tried to stifle a laugh however he failed miserably. Vanya looked at Ash with a confused look on her face as she wondered why Ash had suddenly started laughing.
"What's so funny?" Vanya asked.
"Nice pyjamas." Ash replied.
Vanya immediately looked down at her pyjamas and blushed.
"Shut up. Nurse Joy made me wear them." Vanya muttered.
Ash chuckled again which made Vanya pout at Ash and she gave him a mock glare; Ash quickly stopped laughing and hugged Vanya even tighter.
"So what are you planning to do when you get outta here? Thalion said that he'd spoken to you earlier but you hadn't really come up with a plan."
Vanya broke the hug and looked at Ash excitedly.
"Well I was thinking that when me and Thalion are allowed out of here we'll go with you to Petalburg so you can get your fifth badge."
Ash smiled sadly at Vanya and then averted his gaze.
"While I appreciate the offer Vanya but I have to decline. I'm sorry but after I go to the police station I'm heading home to Kanto for Christmas."
"Why?" Vanya asked.
"I need to get my head straight after what happened and I think that going home is the best way to do that. Besides I don't want to slow you and Thalion down."
Ash heard Vanya let out a sob which made him feel guilty that he made her so upset. He looked at Vanya and saw that tears were starting to trickle from her eyes. Before Ash could say anything else Vanya wrapped her arms around him again and clung on to him tightly. Ash held her tightly and felt her shake in his arms as her tears dampened his shirt. He gently started to run his hand up and down her back as he made soothing noises in an attempt to calm her down.
"She really wears her heart on her sleeve." Ash thought.
"Hey we'll see each other again." Ash murmured.
"You promise." Vanya whimpered.
"I promise."
Vanya eventually calmed down and pulled away from Ash; she wiped her arm across her eyes which got rid of the remaining tears that had been threatening to fall.
"I guess this is goodbye then." Vanya said sadly.
"Yes I guess so but like I said we'll see each other again so it's more like see you later than goodbye." Ash replied.
Vanya smiled at Ash which made him feel a bit better and he pulled her into a hug again. They eventually broke the hug and Ash walked to the door, he opened it and then looked back at Vanya who was sat on the bed. He waved at her and she waved back, he then walked out of the room and headed towards the front doors of the Pokémon Centre. The doors slid open and he stepped outside quickly followed by Meowth, Raichu, Glaceon, Kirlia and Raimodo. He looked down at Raimodo and was a bit sad that he couldn't carry the electric type anymore but he'd grown so quickly that he was now getting too big and heavy for him to carry. He knelt down and stroked the young electric type and felt that the scales on his back starting to harden.
"He'll be ready to start training soon." Ash thought.
Ash suddenly heard Glaceon and Kirlia whine, he stopped petting Raimodo and looked at his pouting daughters. He quickly starting to give his daughters the same treatment that he'd given Raimodo and he smiled as they nuzzled him. Ash gave his daughters a brief hug and then stood up, he turned towards the police station and started walking in that direction. He arrived at the police station a few minutes later and he was greeted by Officer Jenny who had been stood outside, she knew that he was ready to tell her everything that had happened in Meteor Falls so she led Ash inside the building.
A couple of hours later Ash walked out of the police station and headed to the western exit of Rustboro, once he was outside of town Ash sent out Aerodactyl. The ancient Pokémon looked around wondering why he'd been summoned.
"Hey Aerodactyl I was wondering if you could fly us to Slateport?"
'Sure but I can't carry all of you, there'd be too much weight.' Aerodactyl replied.
Ash was pretty certain that he knew what Aerodactyl had said however he looked to Meowth for confirmation.
"He says dat he can't carry all of us." Meowth said.
"That's what I thought he said, damn I guess we'll have to just head to Isaya Town and take the scenic route to Slateport."
Ash had really wanted to head for Slateport and be on the way home as soon as possible but he knew how much Raichu, Meowth, Raimodo and his daughters hated being inside their Pokéball so he'd take the long journey if it made sure that they were happy. He was broken out of his thoughts when he felt something rubbing against his cheek, he looked to his right and saw that Celebi was nuzzling him again while staring at him intently.
"What's up Celebi? You look like you've got something to say."
"Well Ash I think I've got an idea. Everyone just get on Aerodactyl's back." Celebi said.
Everyone looked quizzically at Celebi, they really weren't sure what the grass types plan was but they did as she said and climbed on the ancient Pokémon. At first Aerodactyl was fine however once everyone had piled on he was struggling to keep himself upright. Ash was honestly amazed that Aerodactyl hadn't collapsed considering how much weight he was carrying.
'Heavy bastards.' Aerodactyl muttered.
Ash wasn't sure what Aerodactyl had just said but judging by the tone he'd used it probably wasn't pleasant, he looked at Celebi again who swatted Aerodactyl presumably for whatever he had just said. Celebi's eyes then glowed blue and he felt himself being lifted in the air, he looked at the others and saw that everyone apart from Aerodactyl were now levitating.
"So I'm guessing that your plan is that Aerodactyl will be flying and you'll levitate us all a few centimeters over him so it looks like we are riding on him." Ash said.
Celebi nodded in response and took a seat on Ash's shoulder.
"Alright Aerodactyl head east."
The prehistoric Pokémon nodded and shot into the air at a blazing speed, Ash was amazed at the speed Aerodactyl was displaying and couldn't wait to see what he'd be able to do after some training with Pidgeot.
A few hours later Aerodactyl landed on the outskirts of Slateport in a secluded area, Ash had been insistent that they didn't land in an open area as it would be difficult to explain how Aerodactyl had managed to carry six Pokémon and a human. Ash thanked Aerodactyl for helping them out and recalled the ancient Pokémon, he then led his Pokémon away from the clearing and on to Route 110. It didn't take long for them to arrive in Slateport which was a relief for Ash, he just wanted to go to the dock and purchase a ticket then go and get a room at the Pokémon Centre
After a quick trip to the docks to buy a ticket for tomorrow's cruise Ash headed to a nearby café to get something to eat for him and his Pokémon. They all devoured their food in no time and Ash paid for their meals, they then left the café and made their way to the Pokémon Centre. When Ash arrived at the Pokémon Centre he walked inside and looked around the room seeing that it was mostly empty except for an exhausted looking Nurse Joy stood behind the desk. He walked up to Nurse Joy who did her best to hide here exhaustion but Ash could see through it.
"Hi Ash do your Pokémon need healing." She asked wearily.
"No thank you. I was just looking for a room to stay in tonight. Do you have any spare?" Ash asked.
"Hang on a second, I'll just check under the desk."
Nurse Joy disappeared beneath the desk and started to rummage through the draws for a key. After a couple of minutes Ash was starting to think that he'd need to find somewhere to camp for the night however Nurse Joy suddenly popped up with a key in hand.
"Here you go Ash." Nurse joy said as she handed him the key.
Ash took the offered key and smiled at Nurse Joy.
"Thanks Nurse Joy."
Ash went over to the staircase and climbed upstairs, he finally found his room after a bit of searching and he went into the room immediately dumping his bag on the table. He then lied on the bed and was quickly surrounded by his Pokémon. He smiled at them and wrapped his arms around them, he heard the others gradually fall to sleep and as he listened to their soft snores he joined them in slumber.
The next morning Ash woke up early and he headed down to the docks, he wasn't surprised to see that there was a huge crowd waiting to swamp on to the ship. The Captain declared that the passenger could start boarding the ship to Kanto and there was a massive pile up as everyone tried to get onboard. Ash had chosen to stay back just like he had in Isaya Town, there was no point in trying to barge on to the ship. It made much more sense to just hang back and wait for the crowd to get onboard. As the crowd started to thin Ash made his way to the ship, he flashed his ticket and allowed onboard. He quickly found his room and dropped off his belongings.
Once the ship set off Ash decided to go to the battle deck and go watch some battles, it would also allow him to let his other Pokémon out so they could enjoy the fresh sea air. He arrived on the battle deck and saw a small area that would be prefect for them as it had a great view of the battle area and it would give his Pokémon a little bit of space. He sat down in the secluded area and sent out his Pokémon who like their trainer decided to watch the battles.
After a while Ash lost interest in the matches as there was very little strategy being used but he could tell that they were only just starting their journeys so it wasn't that surprising. He had instead focused on Glaceon, Kirlia and Celebi who had all enjoyed a grooming session, every content sigh that Ash heard made him feel a little happier as he always found joy in doing anything that his Pokémon enjoyed.
Suddenly a shadow loomed over Ash who turned his attention from Celebi to the young boy who was stood in front of him.
"Excuse me um are you a trainer?"
Ash raised an eyebrow as he looked at all of his Pokémon surrounding him.
"I'm surrounded by Pokémon and he's asking if I'm a trainer? He can't be serious can he?"
Ash got his answer when he looked at the expression on the kids face and it was obvious that he was being deadly serious. Ash sighed and he was severely tempted to give a sarcastic reply but when he looked at the kid again he saw a lot of himself when he was that age.
"Yeah I am why?" Ash replied.
"Will you have a battle with me please?" the kid asked.
Ash let out an annoyed sigh, he really didn't want to battle the kid but he knew that the boy wouldn't leave unless he agreed to battle him.
"Okay let's battle." Ash said.
The kid cheered happily at Ash's response and he ran over to the battle area, he stood on one side of the battlefield and waited impatiently for Ash to join him. Ash reluctantly got up and followed the kid to the battlefield, all of Ash's Pokémon followed him as they all wanted to battle and make this as quick and easy as possible. Ash looked around at his Pokémon until his gaze finally stopped on Cyndaquil.
"Do you fancy a battle Cyndaquil?" Ash asked.
The fire type nodded happily and flames erupted from the spots on his back as he wandered on to the battlefield. The kid looked at Cyndaquil and then took a Pokéball off his belt.
"My teacher said that water types are strong against fire types so go Mudkip."
The mudfish burst out of the Pokéball in a flash of red and an excited smirk crept on to his face as he saw the Cyndaquil stood opposite him. Mudkip was no fool, he knew that he facing a strong Cyndaquil and he would have to do more than just rely on his water moves.
"Alright Mudkip let's start with a Water Gun."
Mudkip opened his mouth and a powerful jet of water shot from his mouth straight at Cyndaquil, the fire type waited for a command from Ash however the command never came and he winced as he felt a small amount of pain when the water attack hit him. Ash looked at Cyndaquil in shock, he couldn't believe that he had been unable to come up with something to stop Cyndaquil from getting hit by the water attack. Another Water Gun shot at Cyndaquil who quickly leapt to the right which made the water attack fly past him and almost hit Meowth.
"What the hell is going on? I should have been able to come up with something to counter that attack before it could get anywhere near Cyndaquil." Ash thought.
Ash watched as a third Water Gun was fired and he sighed in relief when he saw Cyndaquil once again dodge the attack easily. Ash couldn't understand what was going on at the minute, usually in battles everything seemed to slow down and he was able to analyze the situation and come up with an effective counter as well as think about what he would do next. This battle was completely different, right now everything seemed to be going ten times faster and he couldn't come up with any tactics.
"Professor Oak was right, I don't have my head straight for battle. I'm glad I didn't try to carry on my journey instead of going home, if I had challenged Norman he would have crushed me." Ash murmured.
Ash looked at the battlefield again and watched as Cyndaquil kept on dodging Water Guns, he then looked at the kid who was getting more and more frustrated that his Mudkip's Water Guns kept missing.
"He's just a kid; he's probably just started his journey and he's giving me a hard time. If I can't come up with tactics I'll just have to have Cyndaquil overpower Mudkip."
"Cyndaquil use Flamethrower," Ash said.
The fire type nodded and shot a massive bust of flames at Mudkip who shot a Water Gun in response, the attacks met and there was a massive difference in power which meant that the intense flames easily overpowered the Water Gun. Mudkip was frozen in place as his fear of the approaching flames took control of his body, the flames engulfed him seconds later and the mudfish let out a pained cry as he was burnt by the flames.
When the flames died down it revealed an unconscious Mudkip, the flames had set part of the deck on fire but it was quickly extinguished by Meowth who shot a Water Pulse at the small fire. Ash thanked Meowth and then walked over to the kid who had picked up his Mudkip and was now cradling the water type in his arms.
"Hey you did really well. I'm sorry that we went overboard on the Flamethrower but that was a good battle." Ash said guiltily.
Ash offered his hand to the kid who angrily batted Ash's hand away and he glared at him. Ash wasn't completely surprised by the boy's reaction considering what he had just done.
"That wasn't a battle it was an insult. I wanted to battle you so I could learn from you but all you did was toy with us and then finish us with a completely over the top Flamethrower."
The boy stomped away angrily before Ash could reply, Ash looked around the deck and saw several people shake their heads and then walk away. The other passengers slowly left the deck until it was just Ash and his Pokémon. Ash looked down guiltily as he thought about what he had just done, he saw Cyndaquil walk into view and he crouched down so he could stroke the fire types head.
"Nice job Cyndaquil, that was some good dodging there and you shot a really powerful Flamethrower so I'm really proud of you."
Cyndaquil nodded feeling a small amount of pride however that feeling quickly vanished as he looked worriedly at Ash.
"Come on guys lets head back to our room."
All of the Pokémon nodded and followed Ash as he led them back to the room.
Ash stayed in his room for the majority of the cruise after the incident on the battle deck, the only times he did come out were meal times and even then he made sure to eat quickly so he'd avoid any other passengers. He was extremely relieved when he heard the Captain announce that they would be docking in Vermillion City in an hours' time.
The hour seemed to pass slowly however the ship finally pulled into Vermillion City and Ash returned his Pokémon. He listened and heard everyone charging towards the main deck and they started barging their way off of the ship. Ash had no interest in getting himself or his Pokémon crushed by the crowds so he waited for everyone else to pile off the ship before he finally left. He walked off the dock and headed north, he had considered getting Aerodactyl to fly them back to Pallet however he had asked the prehistoric Pokémon to fly them to Slateport so he wouldn't ask him to fly them somewhere again. Although the main reason he didn't want to that was because he had a promise to keep and if there's one thing he will not do it's go back on a promise.
When they had walked out of Vermillion City and on to Route 6 Ash stopped walking and stood in place, all of the Pokémon stopped as well and crowded around Ash wondering why he had decided to stop here. Ash crouched down in front of Glaceon and smiled at her, Raichu and Meowth suddenly realized why Ash had stopped here and started looking around the area in an attempt to find the area that they had met Umbreon and Espeon.
"Hey Glaceon I just remembered that I met your parents just a few miles north from here. I saved them from some evil men who were hurting them and in thanks they gave me you and asked me to raise you, I accepted and promised to bring you to see them someday. So do you want to meet your parents?"
Glaceon nodded and called out her name a few times, Ash looked from Glaceon to Meowth hoping that he'd get a translation.
"She said that she'd really like to meet them but no matter what you'll always be her dad."
Ash felt tears form in his eyes and he hugged the ice type tightly who nuzzled her dad which made Ash laugh as her fur tickled his skin. He broke the hug and kissed Glaceon's forehead, the ice Eeveelution returned the sign of affection by licking her dads' cheek which made him laugh again. Ash then stood back up and looked towards the forest where he had met Espeon and Umbreon.
"Come on lets go find Espeon and Umbreon."
Everyone nodded and followed Ash as he made his way through the forested area to the west. As they made their way through the forest they were forced to dodge between trees, duck under branches and push bushes aside. Eventually Ash spotted a familiar circle of trees and he quickly moved towards it; he pushed past the last bush that obscured the area where he had met Espeon and Umbreon and walked into the clearing; his eyes immediately widened at the sight before him.
"What on earth happened here?" Ash said in shock.
