Things weren't great between Angel and Fred. Ever since she killed Knox, she'd caried that guilt, and the guilt of releasing Illyria. The fact that Illria hadn't been seen since then didn't relieve Fred's guilt, or fears. Then Angel confessed about the incident at the "Magick Shop." With no memories Angel thought, and hoped, that he and Buffy were together. Fred knew this wasn't Angel's fault, but she wanted out of this relationship. They'd loved each other, but maybe this wasn't meant to be. But there was someting else. Fred wanted to make amends for releasing Illyria. She had an idea, but it was dangerous. Fred feared Angel would try to stop her. He was worried about her safety. That didn't change just because she wasn't his girlfriend anymore. But Fred felt copelled to help stop the First evil, even if it meant her own life.
