Oneshot 26: Ruthless

by AshAnime

Mugen pressed a tan ear against the weathered door of his room and tried to make sense of the gibberish on the other side. The surly pirate had taken to going out at all hours of the night and coming back only when it suited him. He knew it was beginning to bother his traveling companions, especially Fuu, but he did it anyway.

There was not a single person on the planet that could tame him.

He had just gotten back from one of his late night outings and was surprised to hear talking coming from inside his room. After pressing an ear to the door he quickly came to the conclusion that it was Fuu. She had an annoying habit of cleaning up his area whenever she could, but from what the pirate could hear, the girl wasn't cleaning.

"Take that!" she cried, grunting. Mugen quirked an eyebrow and pushed against the rough wood, cracking it open a little. A part of him knew that if it were anyone else he would be upset at what he was seeing, but it was only Fuu, so the sight amused him.

"I'm Mugen! A dangerous pirate with a thirst for blood! I think I'm smug and clever, but that's so not the case!" Fuu's dainty fingers clutched the handle of Mugen's sword with a deathly grip as she swung it back and forth. Her feet danced across the floor as she pretended to be the very same guy that was spying on her.

"I'm a jerk!" she cried, slashing at whatever imaginary foe her mind had conjured up. "A jerk who thinks he can get whatever he wants whenever he wants. All I care about is booze and sex." Fuu arched the sword through the air, nearly shattering a window that sent pale moonlight across her skin.

Mugen smirked. He wished he could record this moment and play it back for her. Show her how ridiculous she looked.

Fuu's hair nearly fell out of their chopsticks as she did one last spin and fell to her knees, breathing hard. "I'm an idiot who can't even realize when someone's worried about me."

Mugen's smirk faltered.

"Oi, What are you doing?"

Fuu's shoulder's stiffened. She looked as if she simply wanted to blend into the wood beneath her, but then she jumped up and spun on her heel. "Mugen?! How long have you been-?"

"Watchin' yer little show?" His dark eyes studied her. "Long enough."

Fuu's face reddened considerably as she struggled to find something to say. "I wasn't-"

"Guess I should start carrying my sword with me," Mugen interrupted, walking up to her and grabbing the hilt right out of her hands. Fuu frowned and folded her arms. "You been meddling in my stuff every night, girly?"

"Oh like you haven't gone through my things before?"

Mugen snorted and returned his blade to it's sheath on the other side of the room.

"Where have you been?"

He waited a few seconds before turning. "Around."

Fuu rolled her eyes and moved her hands to her hips. "I'm serious, Mugen! You were gone longer then usual. A whole day, to be exact. You've got even more bruises and scars then before."

The Ryukyu pirate averted his gaze and stared out the window.

"Can you please just tell me what's going-"

"Street fighting."

Fuu started, eyebrows quirking. "Fighting? Without your sword?"

"The fist fighting kind, girly." He moved across the room, kicking off his shoes and shrugging out of his red gi. "Things get kind of boring around here."

Fuu desperately tried to hold back the pounding headache that was sure to come. "So you're saying you just go off every night, fist fighting in the streets, because you're bored?!"

Mugen took up his sleeping mat from the corner and threw it unto the middle of the floor. He kicked it and it rolled open at Fuu's feet. "I'm a fighter, girly. I get a kick out of killing, you should know that by now. Quit playing stupid and get out of here. I'm tired and four eyes always wakes us up at the butt crack of dawn."

Her mouth opened, wanting to say more, before closing abruptly. Fuu knew better then to argue with Mugen. All it did was turn into a shouting match in which the both of them forgot what they were even fighting about. She watched as he threw himself unto his mat and deflated into it, all of his muscles and limbs turning to jelly.

The cuts and abrasions all along his back looked painful.

What was wrong with him? What exactly drove a person to put themselves in perpetual danger?

"I'm allowed to worry you know?" she blurted, dropping unto her butt and sitting cross legged. "I've know you long enough."

Mugen turned his head towards her with a perplexed look on his face. "What's that got to do with it."

Fuu shrugged. "Do you want me to clean up your cuts?"

"They're healing just fine on their own."

Mugen's eyes closed and Fuu hugged herself. Why did the smelly jerk even bother staying with them if he was going to act this way every time she tried to be nice?

"Holding your sword was kind of scary. It's a lot sharper then it looks."

Mugen grunted.

"You've killed a lot of people with it."

He shifted.

"For a second there I thought I was going to hurt myself… and its weird but I kind of wish I did."

Mugen sat up and gave Fuu a hard glare. "Why the hell would you want that?"

Fuu leaned back at his close scrutiny. "Because I'm soft! You and Jin go out and risk your lives every day while I just stay here and cook and clean and look pretty! I'm starting to feel like a rusty old house maid!"

Mugen smirked. "Pretty my ass."

Fuu punched him in the arm and sighed. "I'm serious Mugen. One day I really will get hurt and I won't be able to handle it."

"Weren't those crazy brothers enough?" the former pirate grumbled, doing nothing to hide the edge in his tone.

Fuu tried to catch his eye but his gaze was steady on the floor. "I guess you're right," she whispered. "Ask for danger and you'll get it, I suppose."

Mugen finally looked up while Fuu's eyes were trained on drawing invisible patterns across the cold floor. When it came to his body, his own well being, he couldn't have given two shits. It was kind of scary how expendable he viewed his life, but when it came to Fuu…

He sucked in a breath.

When it came to her smile, her frown, her laugh and her tears, he wanted to preserve all of it. Why the hell would she want more danger? Didn't she see how hard he and Jin were working towards making sure she was never kidnapped and hurt again? The bitch was crazy, but Mugen felt a smile tug at the corner of his mouth. All this time he thought there wasn't a single thing him and the nuisance had in common.

Clearly he was wrong.

Fuu jumped as Mugen leaned forward. "Where's your blade?" he asked, a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.

"What?" She gave him a weird look. "You mean my Tanto?"

Mugen scratched his chin. "You got another blade I don't know about?"

Fuu rolled her eyes and reached into her kimono. She pulled out the small blade with the lacquered pink case and held it out to Mugen. Instead of taking it he grabbed her wrist and, with his other hand, removed the sheath.

"What are you-?"

"Swing at me."

Her large eyes blinked. She scrunched her nose in indignation and pulled her wrist out of Mugen's grasp. "Are you crazy?" she asked him. "I'm not going to swing at you. I could- I could actually hurt you."

Mugen crossed his arms defiantly, a challenging look in his feral eyes. "You wanted to be a badass right? Then swing at me. I can dodge your pansy ass jabs anyway."

Fuu bristled. Her fingers tightened around the hilt of her blade as an urge to lunge at Mugen hit her. Was this what he felt when he came across an opponent? A slow burning in his core that traveled out towards his limbs, propelling him forward?

"I won't hold back," she warned, palms sweating.

Mugen smirked. "Wasn't asking you to."

With a grunt Fuu threw her arm at Mugen and in the blink of an eye he was out of the way. His dark brown eyes danced with a playfulness Fuu had missed as she too jumped to her feet and smirked. She secured her hair in her loosening chopsticks and took what she assumed to be a fighting stance.

Mugen laughed.

"This isn't funny!" she protested, biting the inside of her crimson cheek. "I can really hurt you!"

Mugen placed both hands behind his head, not even glancing at his sword. "I'm waiting," he snickered.

Fuu decided to try the straight forward approach again and ran at him with all she had. Her hand came down in a large arc, unknowingly giving Mugen more then enough time to step out of the way like a skilled dancer. Fuu huffed, blowing a strand of hair out of her face.

"If I win," she announced, turning to level him with a serious glare. "You have to promise there will be no more late night street fighting, got it?"

"I ain't promising nothing."

Fuu's brow twitched. "Promise me Mugen."

He studied her for a second. "Whatever. It's not like your going to win anyway. Land a hit on me and you got a deal, girly."

Land a hit, huh? Fuu slowly circled Mugen as he kept his eyes on her, watching her every move. So far the brash, head-on approach wasn't working. She needed to be tactful and sneaky. She needed to find a weakness.

A light bulb went off in her head.

"Ow!" Fuu clutched her hand close to her chest and fell to her knees. She frowned and looked up as Mugen observed her with suspicion. "I think I accidentally cut myself!" Her eyes watered and her lips trembled dramatically.

Mugen scratched his ear and Fuu could tell his suspicion was wavering.

"I think it's a deep cut Mugen," she whimpered, sniffling. "Can you please come and look at it?"

The crass pirate sighed and made his way across the room. He crouched down in front of her, chin in his hand. "I don't see any-"

"Got you!" Fuu sprung forward on her heels just as Mugen lost balance and brought her blade across the front of his shirt. It was a shallow graze, barley springing any blood, but as soon as it happened she dropped her knife and stared… wide eyed. "I'm sorry!" she squeaked, placing both hands over her mouth as she stared down at Mugen's sprawled out form and disbelieving glare.

"Geez," he grumbled. "Didn't know you had it in you, girly."

"Are you ok, Mugen?!" Fuu cried, dropping to her knees next to him. "And I ruined your shirt! I can fix it. I can-" She quieted as a tan hand grabbed her arm.

"Never apologize after a fight. Ever."

She silently nodded. "Are you going to be ok? You look kind of… stunned."

"An annoying brat just took me down," he muttered, staring up at the ceiling. "I got a right to be stunned."

Fuu shoved his side, all concern for him evaporating into thin air. "It's not my fault you're so gullible."

Mugen frowned.

"You thought I was hurt and came running. I didn't know you cared so much."

Fuu curiously watched as Mugen rose a single hand and brought it towards her forehead, flicking her… hard.

"Ouch! What was that for?!"

"Your stupid fighting stance."

"It was not stupid!"

Mugen continued to stare up at the ceiling as Fuu went on and on about how next time she was going to do some real damage if he didn't quit being so mean. His eyes were drawn to the window once again and the ashen moon light emanating from it. He wasn't the kind of guy that kept promises, but he honestly didn't want to hear Fuu's mouth so he decided he'd call it quits with the street fighting.

But he still woke up in the middle of the night.

Except this time a teenage girl in a pink kimono was waiting outside of his room door, tanto blade in hand.

And before they knew it a routine had emerged, and Jin found himself wondering more and more every day exactly when Fuu had gotten so… ruthless.

I know it isn't that great of a comeback chapter but i've been thinking about this idea for a while now and wanted to finally get it typed up. I really do hope you guys liked it!:)

Question of the day: What's your favorite anime besides Samurai Champloo?

Thank you so much to everyone who reviewed! Below I've responded to ALL of you!:

HaruKuro: I'm glad you enjoyed the three old sisters just as much as I did! Thanks for loving my writing:)

GrinningDogByte: I brought a smile to your face?! AWESOME! I love it when that happens. Glad i'm doing Mugen and Fuu some justice!

Tanto Storm: OMG I hope I didn't kill you with the cuteness, who's going to review and read heartless? lol. I know what you mean about getting excited to see a new OS. Whenever my favorite stories on here get updated I have a mini heart attack as well:) Your question for Jin is answered below! Poor guy is glad he was even asked! :D

YungHime: YES! I have that same notion about Fuugen too. You can so tell that their canon but it was like the writers didn't want Mugen to loose his toughness by putting him with Fuu. *sigh* Glad you enjoyed the OS!

FF2Addict: Yeah, nosy people will be nosy people, and I knew most of you would first think it was a ring in the box, but can you really imagine Mugen getting down on one knee and proposing? (weird) lol Anyways i'm glad you loved the originality of the OS and i'm happy to hear it's your favorite! (Mugen is a softy when it comes to Fuu, isn't he?)

VampireAreej: Glad you liked the OS and I know exactly what you mean about being the friend who gives advice. Yes I've kissed before but only a peck it wasn't a serious full on making out kiss. And I haven't been in a "real" relationship because I was either too chicken or the guys who liked me I never liked back.

sweetserenity13: Yes at first this was going to be from an omniscient pov where it was like some unknown person or you as the reader looking down at Mugen and Fuu. But then all of a sudden the three old sisters popped into my imagination (inspired by greek mythology's the fates) and then POOF there they were:) Thanks for liking it!

Brittany: Awww you're welcome! (I didn't know these OS were that awesome) And I will be sure to deliver your kisses to both Mugen and Fuu.

LEGNA: SO HAPPY I MADE YOUR DAY! I will keep updating as long as I have ideas:D

MrGooglyBear: Ya these nut jobs are in love but they just don't like admitting it. Mugen's always yelling at me because i'm really good at showing his elusive sweet side. *shrugs* Oh well:)

whiteplums76: (REVIEWED OS 10) Yes I had trouble titling that OS and your suggestion is a good one, lol. Why didn't I think of that? Glad you like these Oneshots and congrats on joining fanfic! (but be careful it's addicting) :D

OrangeBananaRiLen: Why are they so unconditionally perfect? I couldn't tell you:) But what I can say is that i've found Fuugen to be the easiest couple to write. And about your answer to the question maybe you should consider what your friend is saying but I know how it feels for people to try and match you up with a childhood friend. Things can get... awkward. THANKS FOR REVIEWING:)

I LURVE ALL OF YOU GUYS!:D

AshAnime: Ok Mugen and Jin get over here. Mugen, I have a question from PrincessPotatoOtaku that I forgot about. And Jin, I have a question from Tanto Storm! See, you weren't forgotten!

Jin: *nods while trying to hide a pleased smile*

Mugen: *rolls eyes and places hands behind head*

AshAnime: Alright... Mugen, PrincessPotatoOtaku would like to know... What would you do if Jin fell in love with Fuu? And what would you do to Fuu?

Mugen: *blinks* The fuck kind of question is that?

AshAnime: *sighs* Just answer the question. It isn't that-

Mugen: *turns to Jin* You trying to tell me something four-eyes?! Posing as this Princess fucking potato otaku so you can ask what's been on your mind all along, huh?

AshAnime: Mugen dont-

Mugen: I said I didn't want to fight you anymore but I can change my mind. *slits eyes at Jin* Try me.

Jin: Your paranoia is ridiculous.

AshAnime: Guys, calm down. Mugen, you never answered what you'd do to Fuu.

Mugen: *turns to me with a smirk* Tie her up and never let her out of the house.

AshAnime: *rolls eyes* How charming... alright, Jin. Tanto Storm would like to know... What do you do when you're sulking because no one has asked you questions recently?

Jin: *frowns* Someone finally asks me something, and this is what they ask me?

AshAnime: Look i'm sorry you're disappointed but can you please answer the-

Jin: I read fanfiction about myself.

AshAnime: *squints at Jin* You... You read fanfic about yourself? Are you serious?

Jin: Well you aren't necessarily bending over backwards to give me more then a few lines. *walks out of room*

AshAnime: *looks to Mugen with confusion all over my face*

Mugen: *shrugs*

AshAnime: Well then... that seems to be all the questions for now guys! Please review and tell me what you thought of OS 26!

Don't forget the question of the day!
