Oneshot 29: Not a Good Fit (PART 2)

by AshAnime

Mugen rubbed the back of his neck and sighed into the warm night. Whenever he was alone like this, with out the constant jabbering of Kaori, his mind was filled with nothing but Fuu. Before it was her loud mouth, obnoxious eating habits and what he planned to say if he saw her again.

Now it was her gaunt eyes, bony shoulders and feeble voice asking 'why?'

"Tch."

Mugen rolled unto his side and tried to get some rest on the lumpy mattress. He was lucky enough to find a little old lady who was looking for a cheap tenant when he first stepped foot in this town. But the place was 'cheap' for a reason, and that reason was apparent in the hole-filled floors and mildew stained walls.

The things I do for the little bitch…

Mugen had come to terms with the fact that he was a screw-up a long time ago. So it shouldn't have surprised him that he had made a major mistake, trying to see Fuu again this way. Everything she yelled at him in that stifling alley way was one-hundred percent deserved. He was the one who called it off. He was the one who told her they weren't a good fit. She had tried to move on and eventually would have, but he decided to show his face again.

Because of him… she wasn't eating.

Mugen's eyes snapped open after trying to fall asleep for the millionth time. Sure he could have fed her the excuse he had been totting around for the past year. 'A disaster waiting to happen.' But that wasn't it, was it? He hadn't pulled himself away from their euphoric honey moon because of some 'never meant to be' bullshit. He hadn't stared her straight in the face and said 'I don't want this anymore' just for kicks.

Mugen was a fucking a coward.

He could slit the throat of a man twice as large as him without batting an eye. He could throw himself off a cliff just before execution. The dark figures of death continued to try and pull him in, and time after time he prevailed.

But when it came to Fuu. When it came to the prospect of someone loving him and him returning the sentiment in full…

Mugen was a complete and total coward.

"I'm kind of worried, she never misses a day of work."

Mugen grimaced and grabbed his chin in thought. Kaori blinked up at him owlishly as he wondered what he should do next. After the bubbly girl before him had interrupted his and Fuu's little heart-to-heart yesterday they all went inside and shared some dumplings. Of course Kaori had did most of the talking, trying and failing to dispel the obvious tension, and then they had all decided to go home. Kaori had asked Mugen to visit them at work the next day, Mugen had shrugged and Fuu had walked off without a single goodbye.

"Is there something you two aren't telling me?"

Mugen snapped out of his thoughts and stared down at Kaori. So she was smarter and more intuitive then he gave her credit for. Looking down at her big hazel eyes only reminded him of the old Fuu, and suddenly he realized that this was the reason why he had even approached Kaori in the first place.

"Got any idea where Fuu lives?" he asked, completely ignoring her previous question.

Kaori noticed this but decided not to call him out on it. "Of course. She's my best friend. May I ask why?"

Mugen pouted and held back a groan. Woman were too fucking sneaky sometimes. It was one of the reasons why he tolerated Fuu. Sure she was a little whiney but she never went around giving double meanings to everything or trying to psychologically mess with a guy.

"I know her," he blurted, deciding to give the determined girl before him the partial truth. "Well at least I used to. Look, it doesn't fucking matter why. Are you gunna tell me or not?"

Kaori blinked slowly at him and crossed her arms. "You've been using me this whole time, haven't you?"

Mugen refused to look at her.

"Fine. She used to stay with me, but just a few months ago Fuu got lucky and a cabin on the edge of the woods was up for grabs. It needed a lot of work done so she practically got it dirt cheap. Anyway, if you head out the shop doors and turn left you can follow the trail all the way to where the woods start. Then go right, I can't stress that enough. You have no idea how many times I've gotten lost."

Mugen finally met her gaze and quirked a split brow. "That it?"

Kaori nodded, ponytail bobbing. "Yup. Once you turn right just keep walking. You'll run right into Fuu's cabin."

Mugen nodded and turned on his steel-bottom shoes.

"What? Not even a thank you?"

A crude smirk graced his weathered lips. "Three nights ago was thanks enough."

He didn't have to turn around to know that Kaori's face had turned scarlet.

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

The perky little waitress's directions were spot on. Mugen scratched his cheek and eyed the cabin before him uncertainly. Although he had no idea what the inside looked like, the outside didn't really scream 'Fuu.' The bark used to make the cabin was worn and seemed to be rotting in a few places. Tree leaves completely hid the front steps leading up to a off-kilter door.

Fuu… lived here?

"Girly, open up!" he called, banging on the rotting wood after trudging through mounds of leaves. Bugs of all kinds buzzed at his exposed legs and it took everything he had not to whip out his sword and start hacking. The summers here were brutal.

Sighing, Mugen returned his gaze to the door before him and tried to think of a plan b. He could be his usual destructive self and knock the whole goddamn thing off its hinges, but it was pretty obvious that Fuu didn't make enough money for a replacement.

"Go away."

It was barely a murmur but he heard it none the less.

Mugen's wild gaze drifted towards the window and caught a flash of brown hair just before it disappeared. She had every right to be angry. She had every right to yell at him in the middle of some sweaty alley.

But Mugen wasn't in the mood for hide-and-seek.

He was going to explain himself, something that rarely ever happened, and Fuu was going to listen god damn it.

"I ain't going anywhere girly," he answered truthfully, jimmying the door handle. For such a rundown place he was surprised to find that her lock wouldn't give.

"How am I supposed to get over you if-"

"Don't."

The doorknob in his grasp flew out of his hand and Mugen looked up to see a confused Fuu.

"What do you mean 'don't'?" she whispered, daring him with her eyes to elaborate. He hated when she forced words out of him. He never was one for sentimental shit.

"Don't get over me," Mugen said simply, fixing her with an unwavering stare.

For a split second he thought she was going to slam the door in his face, but then her gaze wavered and Fuu was taking a step back to let him in. Mugen blinked and shoved his hands in his pocket before stepping over the threshold. The inside of the place was nothing like the outside. It seemed Fuu had put her heart and soul into making sure she had a neat and comfortable home.

"Would you like some tea?"

Mugen halted his wandering gaze to stare at Fuu. She was treating him like stranger and it irked him. "Got any booze?" he fired back, only to get a grimace in return.

"You know I don't drink, Mugen," was her sour reply, and Mugen couldn't help the smirk that graced his lips. That was more like it. He wouldn't have been able to take it if she decided to act like she didn't even know his name.

"Why did you come here?"

Why did he come? To a normal person with normal feelings and social skills, the answer would have been easy. I was worried about you. You've gotten so skinny and you look so pale. I'm sorry for everything. I'm sorry I've caused you this much pain.

For Mugen, the answer lodged itself in his throat and all he could manage was, "Kaori wouldn't shut up about how you never miss work so I decided to stop by."

Fuu looked far from convinced. "You come all the way out here, tell me you don't want me to move on, and brush it all off as Kaori being concerned about me?"

The Ryuku pirate scratched the back of his unruly hair and suppressed the urge to shrug.

"I think you should leave, Mugen."

No. He didn't come all this way for formalities. He didn't come all this way just to get shot down. He was wrong, completely unjustified for doing what he did to her, but he never backed down from a challenge. His feet seemed to move on their own accord as the space between him and Fuu diminished.

"I'm not leaving," he stated plainly, matching her pained expression with an earnest one. Or at least as earnest as his sharp features allowed.

"Don't" Fuu bit out as his rough hand rose to cup her cheek. She eyed him with a steely glare but through it all Mugen could tell her walls were crumbling.

"You know I aint good with words girly," he breathed, his long fingers reaching her hair. "I let you go because I was stupid enough to think that you'd eventually do the same thing to me. I'm a violent bastard who can't hug you without squeezing too tight or make you feel better when you're balling your eyes out."

Gradually, Fuu's icy cold scowl began to melt.

"I'm just one big fuck up and I wanted you gone before you realized."

A warm summer wind funneled through the cracks in the cabin, swirling dried leaves across the floor. Mugen could feel his heart beating wildly in his chest. It was a feeling that usually happened during a fight or after defeating a person and feeling their life slip from his hands. It was a feeling he felt so many nights ago, beneath the stars, Fuu's large brown eyes staring up at him with flushed cheeks, smiling.

"You are… a terrible person."

His heart stopped.

"You are a horrible, blood thirsty and ruthless person," Fuu continued, her voice barley above a whisper. She could feel Mugen's hand shake against her cheek. "Being with you is so dangerous…"

Fuu stood up on her tip-toes until her forehead pressed against Mugen's tan one.

"But I love you."

When was the last time he felt this happy? When was the last time he deserved to feel this happy? Mugen opened his mouth to say something but the words refused to flow. His eyes traveled all over Fuu's smiling face and tried to force his voice to work. Why did it feel like a dumpling was stuck in his throat?

"It's ok," Fuu laughed lightly. There were tears in her eyes but she was laughing. Mugen felt something squeeze his chest. "I know what you want to say and I forgive you. It's ok."

And suddenly it was like a year hadn't separated them at all. Mugen clutched her cheeks in his hands and kissed her full on the lips, their noses brushing. He wanted to make sure he relayed everything he couldn't in words. He wanted Fuu to know how much he-

"And one more thing," she suddenly piped, pulling away from his searching lips. "Dump me again and there's no more chances, got it?"

She was trying to put on a tough face but Mugen could clearly see how scared she was. It would take a while for her doubts in him to vanish. Days, months, maybe even years, but he was going to make sure she never had to worry again.

"Geez, girly. Have a little faith in me, will ya?"

Ok so a solid ending. Good? Bad? Terrible beyond belief? Please tell me in your reviews!
