Ok so I don't know what I was on when I wrote this but this shit is loooong. Like I think it might be the longest one shot in these series of one shots. The problem was that every time I wanted to end it at a certain part I kept thinking "no not here, too soon," and then it would just continue. So now you guys have this monster as a final product, lol.

Oneshot 35: Present Day AU (PART 2)

by AshAnime

Mugen didn't decide to pay Fuu another a visit until a month later. Even though he knew she was just being her usual whiney self, a part of him had took it to heart when she told him that she wanted this family to work. That she was oh so very sure they loved her.

So no matter how much he craved seeing her goofy grin and adorable pout, Mugen refrained from popping into her life as often as he used to.

But a month had passed and he couldn't hold back the urge to see her any longer. His restless feet brought him to the shop across the street from her school and it was there he decided he was going to wait for her, sitting at one of the outside tables.

A Mugen who hadn't teased Fuu the entire month was a grumpy Mugen indeed.

"The little bitch," he muttered, swinging the key chain she had given him last year around a tan finger. It was a cheap old thing. A bearded man wearing an eye patch beneath blocky orange letters graced its chipped front.

Mugen distinctly remembered the face he made when Fuu had placed it in his palm and the confusion he felt at seeing her sly grin.

"What's so fucking funny?" he demanded. "And why the hell are you giving me this?"

Small bursts of giggles continued to spill from Fuu's lips as she smiled up at him. "Just take it Mugen. It's a gift from me to you."

He glared at her suspiciously. "What does it even say?"

"You can read, can't you?"

That had frustrated Mugen because no, he couldn't read, but he wasn't about to admit that to Fuu. Fuu, who thought he was this cool and experienced guy. "Yeah. Whatever," he mumbled.

Later that very same day he sought out a random stranger on the street and practically bullied them into reading the orange letters for him.

"The Sour Pirate," the poor boy whimpered, putting up his hands in defense as if Mugen was about to hit him. "I-It's this really popular bar d-down by the beach where all the college kids hang out. P-Please don't hurt me!"

Mugen had simply let the boy go and went back to studying the key chain intently. Why had Fuu found it to be so funny? Did he remind her of the ugly dude on the front?

These were the questions that plagued him a year ago, but now it seemed he had something else to worry about.

Because Fuu was heading out the school's front doors… and she wasn't alone.

Walking next to her was a tall man sporting a low, black ponytail and thin glasses. It was clear as day that he was a teacher, a very young teacher, because of the brief case he held in his left hand and the suit jacket over his right arm.

But what was he doing talking to Fuu like they were… friends?

Mugen didn't know a lot about school, seeing as how he had dropped out very early, but he did know that teachers weren't supposed to be so… friendly with their students.

The key chain bit into his palm as he made a fist around it. Why were Fuu and this teacher walking so close together? Why did she laugh at every word that left his mouth and look up at him with such reverence? And his hand… his fucking hand…

Why was it now reaching over and patting her on the head?

"Oi! Girly!" he suddenly called, standing up from his seat and making his way across the street before he could even consider what he was doing.

The four-eyed teacher looked up from his chat with Fuu and frowned.

That's right, Mugen thought smugly. This little flirting session is over.

"Mugen!" Fuu said in surprise, staring at the approaching vagabond owlishly. "What are you doing here?"

"Thought I'd pay you a visit," he answered, finally stopping in front of them and never taking his eyes off of the glaring teacher. "It's been a while."

"Yeah, a whole month you big jerk."

Mugen shrugged, still keeping his challenging gaze on the teacher before him. He refused to look away even after the man cleared his throat and turned his eyes towards Fuu once again.

"Well Fuu, I should be heading home now," he announced, nodding in her direction. "And you should do the same. Stay out of trouble and-"

At this part he leaned down to whisper in her ear and for a split second Mugen thought he was seeing red.

"I know sir," Fuu mumbled as the raven haired teacher finished and moved away from her pink ear. "I'll be fine."

"Very well then." Before Mugen could act on his rage the well dressed educator was walking away from them and towards a sleek, black Mercedes.

"Mugen are you ok?" Fuu piped up, her soft touch landing on his arm and jolting him out of his dangerous thoughts. Vandalizing that sweet ride may or may not have crossed his mind.

"Fine," he grumbled, shaking off her touch. "What the fuck was that about anyway? Does every teacher at this goddamn school go around whispering in their students' ears."

Pure confusion took over Fuu's features. "Um… no… why would they? Jin was just telling me to be careful with you. You give off that aura with everyone, Mugen."

Mugen opened his mouth to dispute that but then stopped at the recognition of an unfamiliar name. "Jin? Seriously? You call him by his first name?"

"Yes he tells all of his students to call him by his first name," Fuu explained, starting down the side walk in order to begin the short walk home. Her eyes skimmed over Mugen's taut features as she shared this simple fact. "Is there a particular reason why you're acting like this?"

"Like what?" he bit out.

"Like you've got a chip on your shoulder," Fuu shot back, not at all appreciating his tone. "If you didn't want to visit me why bother showing up?"

"It's not-" The dent between Mugen's brows deepened. "I wouldn't have waited outside your fucking school if I didn't want to see you so don't say shit like that."

Fuu's footsteps halted. "So then why are you being so crummy?"

"I don't know, ask Jin. You two seem pretty close." Mugen watched as a million different emotions contorted Fuu's pretty face.

"Please tell me you're not being serious right now! Jin?! My teacher? There is nothing going on with my-"

"Sure as hell didn't look like nothing when he-" Mugen braced himself for the whack but the heavy books in her book bag still hurt on impact.

"Cut it out Mugen! Jin's my teacher for crying out loud!" Fuu exclaimed, whacking him one more time for good measure. "It's illegal and wrong and I honestly can't believe you're jealous of my teacher!"

"Jealous?! Who said anything about being Jealous?!"

Fuu finally stopped whacking him in the arm with her two ton backpack in order to spear him with the harshest glare. "Actions speak louder than words, Mugen," she huffed, swinging the heavy bag back unto her shoulders.

He rolled his eyes and dug his hands into his pockets. "You're one to preach about actions… walking all close to him and letting him touch you and stuff."

"I'm done talking about this."

"Tch, sure. Only 'cause you know I'm right."

Fuu hit Mugen with another heated glare. "Cut it out. There's nothing going on with Jin so stop acting like a jealous boyfriend."

The walk to Fuu's house suddenly seemed a lot longer. "Boyfriend? You wish."

And the venom in her voice suddenly felt a lot more painful. "You're right. I did wish once, but then you shot me down so fast I couldn't even say sorry."

Mugen felt his blood run cold. All of that had happened a year and a half go but of course she still remembered it. Hell, he still remembered it. And there was no erasing the slight chink it had put in their friendship.

"I thought you said we should never talk about it again," he mumbled, pulling a hand out of his pocket to stare down at the key chain in his fist.

"No. You said that."

Oh… right.

Mugen sighed and placed the crummy little key chain back in his pocket.

"Look I'm not trying to guilt you, Mugen. It wouldn't be fair. You can't force someone to see you in that way, after all."

If only she knew.

"And I've kind of moved on from that stupid crush anyway."

If only she fucking knew.

"We're better as friends, right?"

Shut up.

"So I'm sorry for-"

"No," he snapped, before she could finish. Before she could go on torturing him with these assumptions that were totally wrong. "You have no fucking idea what I want. No idea at all."

They both stopped walking at that, and kind of stood on the sidewalk, staring at each other.

"So what do you want?" Fuu whispered, suddenly feeling like every word that now left Mugen's mouth was leaving a burning hot impression on her skin.

"A lot of things," he answered. "But sometimes you just can't have the things you want."

"Is it because I'm seventeen?" she blurted, feeling her face grow hot. "Because I'm turning eighteen next month!"

Mugen rubbed the back of his neck and suppressed a snicker. "No girly it aint that. I just…"

I can't buy you things.

I can't take care of you.

I'm a bum who's attached to a teenage girl.

I'm worthless.

I'm an idiot.

I can't even fucking read, Fuu.

These were all of the things that flittered through Mugen's thoughts, but instead he said, "You deserve better. A whole lot better. So let's just drop this, alright?"

Fuu's frown deepened. "No. You can't just tell me something like that and expect us to drop this all over again. No, Mugen."

Stubborn. That was the only word needed to describe the runt.

"I know you think you know what's best for me," she went on, crossing her arms, "but you honestly don't. You don't get to decided what I do or don't deserve. If this is about money than you're an even bigger idiot than I originally thought. Do I really seem that shallow to you?"

Mugen opened his mouth to speak, but Fuu quickly cut him off.

"I don't care about how much money you have, Mugen. You've stayed by my side longer than most people. Just… Just h-having you means a lot to me."

Oh kami now it sounded like she was going to start crying. He could see it in the slight wobbling of her chin and glassiness of her eyes. The last thing he needed was a blubbering Fuu. He never knew what to do when she cried. It always made him feel pathetic and useless because no matter how much he patted her back awkwardly and tugged on her soft hair, she would just cry harder.

Girls were troublesome.

"Give me your bag," he said suddenly, getting a surprised sniffled from the girl in front of him as she sucked in her tears. Changing the subject was the only solution he could think of at the moment.

"Why?"

"It looks heavy. Fork it over before I change my mind."

Mugen held out his hand and tried to ignore Fuu's warm smile as she handed over the heavy book bag.

"I know what you're trying to do Mugen, but changing the subject isn't going to make this go away."

Mugen grumbled under his breath and watched as Fuu stretched her arms to get the creaks out of her shoulders. It reminded him of that one time he had given her a massage and she had melted like putty in his hands. It was a different side of Fuu that he had never seen before. Her face wasn't in it's usual whiney pinch and even her voice had changed as she moaned, "that feels so good, Mugen!" His face was turning red just thinking about the memory so he swallowed and forced himself to stare forward.

One turn-around-a-corner later and they were in front of Fuu's house.

"Well," she piped up, causing his attention to turn to her once again. "Thanks for walking me home, Mugen. See you next month or whenever you decide to drop by."

She was mad at him. He heard it in her clipped tone and the way she wouldn't meet his gaze. Although he wore an impassive expression, Mugen hated it when Fuu was mad at him. It left him feeling desperate and determined to get on her good side again.

Mugen didn't like feeling desperate.

"I can stay," he blurted, causing her to look up at him as she took back her book bag. "No one's home yet, right?"

Fuu dropped her gaze again and Mugen cursed under his breath. "Mr. Ya- I mean my dad will be home soon. In the next ten minutes actually. You should probably leave."

Why did it feel like he was loosing her? Sure they'd gone through this routine before. A simple 'see ya' and then he'd show up again a week later, ready to cause more trouble. But this time…

This time it felt like Fuu was cutting off all ties for good. And the more he thought about it the more he realized that she had every right to. Here was a family that she had stayed with for more than four months. A family that actually seemed like they wanted her. She could finally settle down and have a life. Make friends and get a boyfr-

Mugen's eyes gleamed with rage as his thoughts halted on that one word. Imagining some random guy kissing and touching Fuu felt really, really wrong. So wrong he nearly retched.

"Mugen?"

His mind snapped back to reality and before he could even consider the consequences of what he was about to do he had Fuu's small wrist in his big hands.

"M-Mugen?" she said again, but he ignored her. Fuu's converse clad feet skittered across the sidewalk as he pulled her into him and rested his chin atop her head. She was taller than the average girl but so small compared to him.

His arms came up to wrap around her waist and pull her farther into him. They were so close he could feel her heart beating frantically against his solid chest. Both of them were used to the occasional kiss on the cheek or brief side hug every now and then, but this was different.

The way Fuu's tiny hands clutched the back of Mugen's shirt made it clear to him just how different this was.

"Mugen… this…" her breath coasted across his neck as she spoke and Mugen strained to suppress a shudder. He was probably the most experienced guy in all of Japan when it came to women and sex. But for some reason just the simple act of Fuu's lips brushing against his collar bone as she talked made him nervous.

"What is this?" she finished, and he let out a breath when she finally stopped talking. He honestly didn't know how much more he could take.

"What do you mean 'what is this'? It's a fucking hug stupid," he ground out, covering any hitches and wavering in his words with a growl. His arms tightened around her torso as if to remind her they were hugging and he nearly lost it when a breathy laugh escaped Fuu's soft lips.

"I know that you big jerk," she muttered playfully, "I meant… what does this mean?"

He blinked, not even caring about the fact that her new dad would be home any minute, or that her book bag had fallen to the ground. All Mugen could think about was her question and why it made his throat close up.

This was not his area of expertise. He didn't do feelings and all that mushy crap. He flirted, fucked and fled. That had been his motto from day one. But now he was standing outside of house he could never have, with a girl he could never have and he was enjoying every single minute that passed by with her arms around him.

What the fuck was the world coming to?

"It means you ain't getting rid of me that easily."

He felt Fuu stir against him as she tried to get a good look at his face. She was always doing that. Examining him as if his words weren't enough.

"Of course not," she chirped, subconsciously drawing circles on his back. He really wished she would stop doing that before he did something really inappropriate. "You didn't think I was that mad, did you? I could never stop talking to you Mugen. For a while…"

Her voice trailed off and he leaned back a little to look her in the eye.

"For a while you were all I had."

No, no tears.

"How could I ever forget that?"

Fuck, there goes the dam.

"C'mon girly don't cry on me. I don't know what to do when you pull that shit."

"I-I'm sorry," she hiccupped, retracting an arm from around his waist to rub at her damp eyes. "You know I can't control it Mugen!"

"Alright, alright. I get it." And then it was like the fight between them had never happened as he gingerly patted her back and attempted to crack jokes that weren't even that funny.

"Why the fuck are you crying harder?!" he exclaimed, seriously feeling helpless as the tears started gushing.

Fuu stared up at him and for second he felt his brittle heart crack, but then she was laughing through her falling tears and we was staring at her like she had two heads.

"I-I'm crying harder b-because you cheering me up is the sweetest and f-funniest thing ever!" she gasped, completely backing away from Mugen now to clutch at her stomach.

He supposed that made sense but he wasn't going to let her off that easily.

"Geez, I try to be nice for once and all you can do is laugh at me."

Fuu sobered as her giggling came to end. She straightened up and wiped the tears from her eyes before uncrossing Mugen's rigid arms. He still refused to look at her, but then her soft hands were guiding his face back to her.

"Thank you, Mugen."

He raised a brow at that, because there was no mistaking the mischievous twinkle in her eyes. His mouth opened to ask her what she was planning when suddenly her face was only a couple of centimeters away from his and timid lips were brushing against his mouth in one swift peck.

He opened his eyes wide as she leaned away and tried to control the heat in his lower abdomen at he stared at her incredulously. "Did you just-?"

"Mhmm."

"And-"

"You bet."

"Girly-"

"See you later, Mugen."

Mugen watched in stunned silence as she swiped her book bag from off the ground and headed up her driveway. She only turned back once to spare him a small wave before unlocking her front door and heading inside.

What… the… fuck?

His thoughts were a jumbled mess as he slowly walked back the way he came, hands in his pocket and fingers brushing along the plastic keychain he always kept with him.

Mugen had experienced many kisses in his life. He still remembered that one Russian lady who had taught him things he didn't think were physically possible. But Fuu's kiss was a completely new experience despite the simplicity of it.

All she did was press her lips against his lips. There was no tongue, moaning, groping or nibbling. Just a simple, innocent kiss.

A kiss that made Mugen feel like he was about to explode.

Awww Mugen's acting like a teenage boy with a crush! It's adorable! Anyways I hope you guys liked this unnecessarily long part 2. I'm still considering turning this into a separate chapter fic in and of itself. I've just been so busy lately and I know that if I do do it, chapters wont come out often.

Anyways... Thank you so much for reading this and just being with me for this long like we are already at OS 35, can you believe it? I love you guys so much it's not even funny.
