Chapter 383

Riley, Wesley, and Winifred went to New Orleans. They familiarized themselves with the legend of Mercury. In 1833 a group of slaves escaped and sought help from an ancient spirit. They gave some of their own blood, and the spirit promised they would always be safe. Those who survived had to return in ten years, and bring other followers. This ritual continued every ten years. While it once began with oppressed peoples seeking freedom, it degenerated into thieves and scoundrels seeking riches. New Orleans street gangs had a truce to honor this spirit. Whatever its original name people had since named thi spirit "Mercury" god of thieves. The ritual was coming up within the week. Since the community still sufferred from hurricane Katrina it was expected that many would come, desperate to ask the god of thieves for help in saving their city. Mercury had one piece of the Chalice, according to Quentin Travers. Whether or not he really was a god, they hoped he would care enough to help. If not, could these three fight a god.
