Chapter 389
Riley stood in the crowd, waiting for Mercury. As an evangelical christian he didn't think he'd ever be trying to summon a pagan god, especially not the god of thieves. But too much was at stake. He was frightened, and not the only one. Fred seemed scared, she was holding Wesley's hand. Or maybe Wesley was the frightened one. The crowd waited, some of the older thieves said it didn't take this long last time. The longer it took the angrier and more worried the crowd became. Some didn't like Riley. They remembered after Katrina some idiot preachers saying it was God's punishment for those who worshipped Mercury. Although in danger Riley had his faith, and his hope. He thought about what Wesley said about the Master, that his plan to open the Hellmouth all those years ago failed because of an earthquake. Even for California the timing seemed too coincidental. Riley preferred to think that was divine intervention, that God would not let the Master win. But as Riley waited for Mercury he wondered. And he wished that Samantha was here, so he could hold her hand right now.
