Chapter 399
Angel, Spike, Lorne, and Gunn waited in the rebel camp for days for Buffy to return. They began feeling sympathy for the rebels, they were after all fighting an evil dictatorship. Even Lorne, who'd never wanted to return, wondered if it wasn't his duty to fight for change. But they always looked for a way to escape. There was no guarantee that Buffy would return. If the Covenant killed Buffy, the Groosalag might believe that she'd betrayed them. If that happenned, it might be a good idea to look for an escape route. Then one day the Groosalag talked to his liuetenants, then asked to see his four hostages in private. He dismissed his guards. The Groosalag had a reputation as the greatest warrior in Pylea. But if he tried anything it was still four against one.
Groo: My spies tell me that Buffy is being tortured by Silas.
Angel: We have to save her.
Groo: I believe we can, if we work together.
Spike: We're just here for the Chalice, not your revolution.
Groo: Each of you must make the decision for yourself. Leave, and try to rescue your friend on your own. Or help us, and together we can rescue her, retrieve the Chalice, and bring freedom to all of Pylea.
Spike: Why do I care about Pylea?
Groo: We have common interests. My guess is that Silas keeps the Chalice piece because he covets this power. You want the Chalice to save both worlds. I want to keep Silas from using its power against my people.
Gunn: No offense, but how do we know you won't use this Chalice piece for your own ends?
Groo: I give you my word. If that isn't enough consider this. Neither of us can get this artifact without working together. If after this I do try to take it, you'll have a better chance of taking it from me than from Silas.
