Dawn saw the pain that her mother was going through. Ever since Joyce learned that Buffy was a potential slayer she lived with the possibility of her daughter not coming back home. Every night Buffy went out patrolling her mother wondered if she would ever return. And now, Buffy was spending her spring vacation in Pylea, searching for some magick artifact. It was already friday, Buffy still hadn't returned. School started again in three days, would Buffy even come back? Dawn treid being there for her mother. They bonded over their mutual fear. Dawn feared losing her big sister, Joyce feared losing her daughter. It helped having someone with them who was also scared. But there was only so much that they could do for each other. Because neither Summers woman could escape the fear that they would never see Buffy again.
