Note Ten: How can I be happy…?

Panting was heard. A black and red haired boy was seen. He was panting heavily. His scarlet eyes were swollen and seemed tired. He was seated in his hammock. The boy looked at the stars through the window. Tears fell from his eyes. He started to sob and whimper. He hugged himself in an attempt to calm himself, but it didn't work. Instead, he cried harder. His breathing accelerate, his hands shaking and his mind restless. In his eyes you could see the brokenness inside. Lifeless, he seemed a dead puppet.

"It's been almost three days… Do I have to keep waiting…? I'm so sorry… Please, don't do this to me…" The boy shivered once more. "It's so cold in here…"

The boy searched for his sheets, only to discover they weren't there. He sighed and hugged himself again.

"Screw the sheets. I don't need them…" He looked at the window again. "I miss you so much… I'm so sorry… Please forgive me!" The boy started to cry again.

He hugged himself tightly and covered his face with his arms. He used his knees as a support for his arms and stayed in that position the rest of the night.

Rays of light filtered through the window. The boy felt the warmness they gave, but that didn't move him. Instead, he stays in the same position he was and didn't dare to move one muscle. A couple of minutes passed and he was still in that position. That was until a knock in the door was heard.

"Yuma, are you awake?" Another knock. "Yuma?" The door was suddenly opened.

A red haired woman appeared from the door and went to the attic to check the young boy. Her head appeared through the hole and she noticed the boy was still in his hammock in the same position from last night. She got really worried and went to the boy's side. She then tried to touch the boy's head to see if he was awake, but to her surprise the boy rejected her act.

"I'm awake. What do you need Akari?" The boy spoke a bit irritated; he lifted his head only that his eyes could be seen.

"Yuma, are you feeling well? You seem a bit… Sick." Again the woman tried to touch the boy's forehead, only to be rejected.

"I'm fine. If that's what you needed then you can leave now." The woman seemed surprised by the boy's harsh attitude.

"Well… Grandma already made breakfast, are you going to come?" She asked taken aback.

"No. I don't feel like it." The boy firmly responded, but after noticing the reaction of the woman he added: "Maybe I'll go later."

"…Fine, Yuma. Call me if you need something." She was about to leave but before she did she turned back to see the boy again. "Are you sure you're not sick?"

"I'm sure. No need to worry." He answered covering his face again.

"You know you can tell me anything, right? You can trust me." She got a little near him.

"I know. Now, would you please leave me alone?" He spoke irritated again.

"'Kay, 'Kay. I'm leaving." She turned to leave but before she looked back once more and sighed. She knew something was wrong with her brother, but didn't know what. She then finally left the room.

The boy looked up to make sure his sister was gone, and after confirming he sighed. He stayed looking the hole deciding if he should leave or if he should stay in the room. He finally decided to stand and to change his clothes. He went to the closet and searched for his usual attire. He then changed his clothes making sure he didn't hurt the little wounds he still had. He was glad they were way much better than the first time he saw them.

After finishing he returned to the attic. He sat in the hammock again and stayed there, doing nothing. He felt so bad he couldn't even stand and do something else. He started thinking all the events that happened almost a month ago, and silently started crying, feeling like a complete idiot for making such mistakes. Inside his heart he hoped his best friend could still forgive him for everything he's done.

A couple of hours have passed and the boy was still in his room. Again, a knock was heard but this time the boy responded.

"Coming!" The boy went down the hole and into his real room to open the door. "Yes?"

The red haired woman looked at the boy. "Yuma, I was worried. Umm…. Can I enter?"

"Ahhh…? Sure, sure." The boy gave a step back and let the woman enter.

She entered and sat in the boy's bed. She then looked at her brother and patted the bed for him to sit beside her. The boy took a moment to understand and when he did he closed the door he was still holding. He then sat beside his sister's side. The two stayed there in silence feeling a bit tense for the awkward moment, until the woman decided to speak.

"Yuma, I've been wondering… It's something wrong with you? I mean, are you sick or something like that?" The woman asked looking at the boy.

The boy frowned. "What makes you think that?"

"Well, you've been acting kind of strange lately. You've been more… Closed… I don't know how to explain it…" The woman lowered her head.

"Neither I…" The boy whispered gaining the woman's attention. The boy quickly added. "I mean, I don't get what you're saying. I'm fine, really. So you don't need to worry about anything."

"Then, what about this morning? You were acting so strange and you looked paler and your eyes were red and swollen." She suddenly gasped. "You've been crying?"

The boy opened his eyes wide. "What? What makes you think that?" He laughed nervously. "Why does everyone notice?! Do I have a sign in my forehead saying 'Hey! I've been crying all night!'?" He thought sarcastically.

"It's kinda obvious, Yuma. I know you better than anyone in this world, so it's no use to hide things from me. Are you going to tell me why were you crying?" She looked directly at the boy's eyes.

"I wasn't crying. My eyes were dirty and it started tearing on its own." He quickly answered.

"Yuma, I wasn't born yesterday-" The woman started but Yuma interrupted.

"No Akari, you were born 21 years ago." He said trying to change the topic.

"Yuma! Just tell me the truth! Why were you crying?!" Akari yelled annoyed.

Yuma looked at his sister and said nothing. He opened his mouth about to say something but closed it again.

"Well? Are you going to tell me?" Akari asked impatience.

"Did you know they aren't two snowflakes that are exactly the same?" The scarlet eyed boy asked back.

"Yuma! Stop changing topic! Just answer!" She said raising her voice to a dangerous tone.

"Also, hail can kill people if it's very big." He added, not scared of what his sister could possibly do.

Akari sighed exhaustedly annoyed. "Fine, if you don't want to talk then don't do it! I don't have to lose my time in a lost cause." She stood to leave the room.

Yuma looked at his sister as she closed the door angrily when she left. He sighed. "Thanks Science Project, for giving me a way to annoy Akari enough to make her leave." Yuma thanked in his mind.

He looked again at the door and suddenly felt really bad. He made his sister pretty angry at him. It hurt him to know his sister didn't care enough to handle his childish attitude. He sighed and went to the attic once more. There he lay down on his hammock and closed his eyes. Maybe he could finally sleep after three days…

After the boy tried to sleep, which he didn't succeed, he decided to leave his room. He went downstairs and found that his friends were there. When he saw them he quickly left the room and went to his room where he locked himself up. He heard his friends knocking and trying to enter but he didn't let them. Instead he said he was tired and he wanted to be alone to get some sleep. After a couple of minutes where his friends tried to get him out, they finally left the house. Yuma watched from the window in the attic his friends leaving and going to their own direction. He sighed and lay down in his hammock again, waiting the precise moment to leave the room again.

He didn't count on hearing another knock in his door. He stayed silent to make whoever was knocking leave. But the person kept insisting to enter, knocking even more. Yuma was about to talk when the person knocking suddenly spoke.

"Yuma, it's me Akira. No one is here, can you let me enter?" The black haired boy asked from the other side of the door.

"Akira? Hell no! In your dreams I'll let you enter!" Yuma crossed his arms angrily. He definitively won't let the person who hurt his best friend enter.

"Yuma…" Akira sighed. "Listen up child. We need to talk. Stop evading me and open the door." Akira said, now with Black Mist's voice.

"We don't have anything to talk about! Now, please leave me and my house alone." Yuma yelled angrily.

"I know you're probably angry, but let me enter." Black Mist demanded before changing his voice again, now sweet and pleading. "Please, Yuma-kun."

Yuma stayed with his arms crossed a while, before speaking. "Fine, I'll let you enter. But if I tell you to leave, then you will leave, 'kay?"

"I promise, Yuma-kun, I promise!" Akira spoke delighted.

Yuma took a minute to think if he was making the right decision but at the end he opened the door. When he opened he was received with Akira's big grin informing he just fell for Akira's plan. But there was no turning back now. Akira entered the room and locked the door behind him. Yuma could only watch helpless as the other boy went into the attic. He sighed and looked at the door thinking if he should unlock it before following the other boy. He shook his head and went into the attic.

"What took you so long?" Akira asked once the red eyed boy sat beside him.

"You shouldn't care. What do you want?" Yuma asked back with a harsh attitude.

Akira didn't seem impressed. "Why are you so angry at me?"

Yuma laughed sarcastically. "That is really a stupid question, don't you think? Use your head for once, why do you think I'm mad?"

"And I thought I was the evil one…" Akira whispered and his voice changed again. "Humans really impress me Yuma, especially you." Black Mist spoke smiling a little.

"If you came just to tell me that then you can leave. I don't wish to be with you either talk." Yuma said crossing his arms again.

"Now, now Yuma! Calm down a little. I'm here to help you. We're friends, don't you remember?" Black Mist got near the boy.

Yuma just looked away still with is arms crossed.

Black Mist kneeled, took Yuma's shoulders and whispered. "We have a truce, Yuma, a promise. Don't tell me you have forgotten."

"I haven't. But I think I don't want to be part of this 'truce' anymore. It's over Black Mist, now get away from me." Yuma was about to pull back but Black Mist made his grip stronger.

"Listen up Yuma, this 'truce' it's not something you can get away that easy. You made a promise and you made the payment, you can't get out of this. You're in, you want it or not. Got that clear?" Black Mist whispered near Yuma's ear in an almost deadly tone.

Yuma shivered a little. "Then tell me, how can I get out?"

"Get out? I believe you aren't understanding, there's no way out Yuma. You should have thought this before accepting." Black Mist smirked, never letting go of the grip.

"There must be a way out. How could I ever think you were going to tell me? After all, you gain nothing helping me, don't you Black Mist? Why don't you tell me your true purpose?" Yuma said in a challenging tone.

"Oh, getting a bit challenging, aren't we? You should stop doing it Yuma, if you continue you're only going to get worse. Maybe that's why Astral doesn't want to be with you anymore…" Black Mist grinned evilly.

Yuma widened his eyes. Black Mist just hit a weak point. "Don't you dare mention Astral. This is about you and me Black Mist, Astral has nothing to do!"

"You're wrong Yuma. Astral has to do with this. If it wasn't for him you wouldn't need my help and we had never made the truce. You're so scared of hurting him you don't even notice you're making things worse."

"Shut up! Leave me alone! I don't want to hear anything more!" Yuma tried to get away but Black Mist kept his grip on Yuma's shoulders.

"You don't want to hear the truth Yuma? You don't want to hear that everything's your fault? That if it wasn't for you probably Astral would be better?"

"I told you to shut up! Get out of here! Get out!" Little tears formed in the boy's eyes. He knew, he knew it was his fault but it hurt every time he remembered.

"Accept it Yuma. You're just in the way. You aren't going to help Astral, you're just going to make him slow down. Probably, he's going to die for one of your mistakes. You're even more useless than he could possibly be."

"Stop! Stop talking! Shut up! I don't want to hear! Get out of here! Leave me alone!" Tears now free fell from the boy's eyes. He knew Black Mist was right.

"Tell me Yuma, how does it feel? How does it feel being a traitor? How does it feel hurting your best friend? How does it feel being useless? How does it feel being so human, so weak?" Black Mist whispered in the boy's ear.

"Stop, please, stop… Please, I'm begging you, please stop…" Yuma couldn't take it anymore. He was crying heavily.

"No, Yuma. You have to learn. Life's not going to stop hurting you. You need to be stronger; you need to accept the truth! Accept it Yuma! Accept everything's your fault. Accept you're useless. Accept you're a traitor. Accept you're Astral's worst enemy."

Yuma opened his eyes wide. More tears fell from the boy's eyes. "I… I… I…"

"Say it Yuma! Accept the truth! Do it now!" Black Mist demanded.

The boy started shaking a little. "I… I accept it… I accept the truth… I accept it's my fault… I accept I'm useless… I accept I'm a t-traitor… I accept… I'm A-Astral's worst e-enemy…" He whispered.

"That's it Yuma. See? It's easier when you finally accept the truth." Black Mist let go of the grip and moved in front of the boy. He took the boy's face and made him look up. "Now, Yuma. Look at me. Are you feeling better, my boy?"

The boy looked at the dark-golden eyes. Tears were still falling. He nodded slightly making the other grin wider.

"Good boy!~ Come here." Black Mist opened his arms and hugged the human boy. "Now, now, Yuma. Stop crying, my boy. Tears are never going to solve our problems." He patted the boy's head.

The boy hugged back and covered his face in the other's chest.

"Remember well, life's not going to stop hurting you. You have to be strong, Yuma. Learn from everything around you. Become a reason to be. But mostly Yuma, don't trust anyone." Black Mist whispered the last part.

The boy looked up. "W-what? Why?"

"People around you will try to hurt you even more. They're only going to slow you down. They only want to destroy you, Yuma. They don't care about you, even when it seems like it. They're going to take advantage of your friendly personality, just like what that Vector guy did."

Yuma widened his eyes. "H-how do you know that?!"

"I know many things Yuma. I know everything that happened. You don't have to worry; I won't hurt you like he did." Black Mist gave a reassuring smile.

"I k-know I c-can trust you… Thanks, for making me open my eyes. I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for you." The boy closed his eyes and rested his head in the other's chest.

"It's okay, Yuma. I'll always be here…" Because of his closed eyes, the boy didn't notice the evil grin that formed in Black Mist's face.

After a couple of minutes more after their conversation, Akira left the house smiling as brightly as ever. Yuma seemed a bit more lighten up and decided to spend the remainder of the day with his sister and grandma. After doing some errands, it was late night and everyone went to sleep. Yuma went to his hammock hoping he could sleep that night and inside himself he also hopped to see the blue alien the next day. Sadly his wish didn't come true.

When next day came, with big gray clouds, the boy had to wake up early because of school. That was one of those moments when you hate the world because of having to wake up early, especially when you couldn't sleep last night. In his mind, Yuma wished with all his heart he could skip school, but he knew he couldn't. He woke up and went to the bathroom to change his clothes. Bit before he could even reach his door he felt dizziness coming through his head. He stopped his tracks and took his head in both his hands, trying to get the dizziness away. But it didn't work. He then noticed the sudden ache in his stomach and put one of his hands in there. When he retreat his hand he was surprised of seeing his hand covered in red.

"What is this? I-it's… I-it's blood!" Alarmed he took is shirt off and saw his stomach all covered in blood.

He quickly left his room and went to the bathroom, where he locked himself up. He searched for some bandages and alcohol in one of the shelves and started cleaning his stomach. He bitted his lips to not scream. It hurt pretty bad, so that meant there was an open wound. After cleaning he discovered there wasn't one wound, instead there were a lot of little wounds, what made him remember the first ones he had.

"How do I keep getting these wounds? They look like… No, it's impossible… I haven't hurt myself never in my life, minus with a knife… But what if..? No, no, no, no, there must be another explication to this. Yes, there must be…"

The boy finished cleaning the wounds and then decided to take a shower. He cautiously washed his stomach making sure he didn't hurt himself even more. After some minutes in the shower, the boy felt his dizziness starting to leave, but it was still strong enough to disorient the boy. He stayed there until he felt nothing was spinning. He then got out of the shower and searched for some pills that could help him recover. He found them and started dressing in his school uniform. After brushing his teeth, he took the pills and drank them. He then cleaned the mess he made in the bathroom, erasing all the evidence of what happened.

Breathing calmly, Yuma exited the bathroom ready to go to school. He went downstairs and checked if his sister was there. When he saw she wasn't, he left the house without making a sound. He reached his school just in time, a couple of seconds before the bell rang. During class, the boy couldn't pay attention; even though he drank the pills he still felt a bit dizzy. Day went 'normal' as it seemed, the boy didn't have any problem when his friends asked for what happened the day before. He acted like he would normally do, and it seemed Akira did too. After a hard day at school, where the teachers made sure to make the student's brains tired, the boy was able to return home, of course with a lot of homework.

The boy asked his sister to leave him alone in his room so he could do his homework, to which his sister reluctantly accepted. The boy stayed all afternoon in his room, finishing works and things from school. He was almost finishing his math homework when he decided to take a rest. He sighed and lay down on the cold floor. He closed his eyes and remembered what happened the day before.

"Maybe he's right… Maybe I'm Astral's real enemy… Maybe I shouldn't even exist…" The boy started tearing a little. "What is my purpose in this life? Am I here to simply hurt others? Am I here to receive pain? Am I here to be a challenge that others have to overcome? Am I here to be the enemy…?"

He started sobbing. "No, I shouldn't cry. Tears are never going to solve our problems!" He cleaned his eyes and looked at the window. "Can you hear me? I'm broken, I have paid the price. Will you now forgive me Astral?"

The boy looked at a little piece of paper that was in the floor. It was blank, unwritten, pure. He took the paper and the pencil he was using a moment before. He started writing one of his now well-known notes.

How can I be happy when you're sad?

Giving the note a sad look he turned back to his unfinished homework. He knew writing the notes was a seriously bad problem, but it was the only way he could express his feelings. It was the only way Astral could possibly see them…
