Ariette: I'm deppresed and happy at the same time... Is that weird?

Yuma: Yes, it is.

Note Thirteen: How can I have Power...? (Part One)

Astral watched his partner unconscious body. Little tears escaped his eyes. He was blaming himself for Yuma's state. He shouldn't had trust Black Mist, that evilish number only wanted to fullfil its own evil purposes. How could he trust the number? He knew, he knew yet he didn't want to accept it. If something happened to Yuma he will never forgive him. And though he knew it was Black Mist's fault, he also knew it was his own for believing him. Now he could only hope and wish for Yuma sake, while remembering his biggest mistake in life.

After Akari found Yuma unconscious, she took him to the Hospital. There, three nurses came and took him to the emergency room, not before giving Akari the Key. A doctor followed soon after. Akari and Astral, (Though Akari didn't saw him.) stayed waiting for almost two hours. After waiting what it felt like an eternity, a nurse with blue clothes came.

"Tsukumo Yuma relative?" The young man in blue asked.

"Yes, I'm his sister." Akari said, standing quickly from the shair she was sitting.

"The doctor is waiting, please come." The nurse said and started walking.

"Right." Akari quickly followed.

A couple of steps later.

The nurse stopped in front of a door. "Please, wait a moment." He said to Akari and entered the room. Some minutes later he came out. "You may enter. Dr. Takede is waiting inside."

"Thanks." Akari then entered the room. A man in a white coat, around his 30's, greeted Akari.

"You're Ms. Tsukumo, if I remember well, right?"

"I am. So, what happened to my brother?" Akari said not even bothering to sit down.

The doctor took his glasses off. (Yes, he has glasses.) "Before that, Ms. Tsukumo, I would like to ask some questions. Please, sit dowm." The man pointed a chair that was in front of him.

Akari stayed still a little, but then she sat reluctantly. "Ok... What do you want to ask?"

The doctor looked at her, like if he was trying to find a way to ask her the questions. He then took a paper and a pen. "Ms. Akari is your name, right?"

Akari frowned. "Yes. It is."

The doctor nodded and wrote something in the paper, gaining not just Akari's curiosity but also Astral's. The doctor stopped writting and looked up. "Ms. Akari, do you know if Yuma has been feeling lonely, sad, stressed, or guilty?"

Astral oppened his eyes wide. He looked down with sadness. If he could answer he would had said 'yes'.

Akari gasped surprised. "What do you mean? What happened to my brother?!"

"Please calm down. I need you to answer all my questions with the truth. When we finish I will tell you why I'm asking them. So please, answer."

"Well..." She looked down. "I-I don't know... I mean, Yuma was acting fine until last week."

Astral looked at Akari surprised. Did she really not noticed Yuma's behavior since one month ago?

"I see..." The doctor wrote some more and then asked. "How he was acting this last week?"

"He... He didn't wanted to go to school or even get out of his room. He didn't wanted to eat or talk with anyone. He seemed really sad and like he was in pain..." Akari started tearing a little. "I wanted to bring him here to see if he was sick or something, but he refused so scared. I don't even know what to think now..."

Dr. Takede gave Akari a handkerchief, which she took thankfully. He then proceeded to ask another question. "Have Yuma had a fight or a strong discussion in this last week that could make him go into a depression?"

Akari gasped again. "In fact, yes. One of his friends told that Yuma indeed had a fight with one of his best friends. It seemed it was a really strong one because, while his other friends came this week, the one who had the fight never appeared."

Astral stared surprised. Yuma had a fight...? Wait... Does she mean... himself? But, how could this friend of Yuma know they had a fight? Well, not exactly a fight, but it could count as one.

The doctor looked at Akari thoughtfully. "Do you know if this friend he had was a bad influence?"

Akari shook his head, sadness all writen over her face. The doctor nodded and wrote in his paper. "Do you have any other question?" The woman asked eager to know of his brother's state.

"Yes, one more. Have Yuma self-inflicted pain on purpose before?" He asked, seriousness taking over his face.

Astral looked at the man in shock. Yuma? Self-inflicting pain? That's ridiculous! For some reason that accusation made him angry. Not to mention how his sister was feeling.

The red haired woman gasped and became angry. "What are you trying to say?! That my brother is one of those kids who go hurting themselves for fun?! That's the craziest thing I have ever heard!"

The doctor took his glasses and putted them on. "Please, just answer my question. And in case you didn't know, this kids that hurt themselves don't do it for fun. It is confirmed that they have a mental problem that must be treated immediately."

Akari suddenly felt bad and looked down. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. It's just that this question took me off guard. Just the thought, that Yuma could hurt himself... I just couldn't take it..."

"I know Ms. Akari. It is hard, but sometimes we just see what we want and when we realize the truth, it's really late..." He said, an apologetic look on his face.

Astral noticed the doctor's expression and got worried. Why did the doctor looked like he was sorry for something? Did something happen to Yuma?

"But why... Why are you asking these questions?" Akari looked at the doctor.

"I really hoped Yuma had told you, but it seems he didn't want to..."

"Tell me what? What did Yuma didn't told me?" Akari asked, curiosity and worry in her voice.

Astral was curious too. But what worried and hurt Astral the most was the fact that, again, Yuma was hiding something.

"During Yuma's last visit... Do you remember what I told you?"

Astral tilted his head sightly. Yuma came here before?

"Y-yes. You said that Yuma's body was really weak and that it seemed he wasn't getting the necesary nutrients. Plus, you gave him a special diet... What does that have to do with this?"

"Well, you see, during Yuma's last visit that wasn't the only thing we found." The doctor searched for something and took out a folder with papers inside.

"What else did you found?" Akari asked fearfully.

Astral looked at the folder, noticing the name 'Tsukumo Yuma' in its side. He narrowed his eyes. What did that folder contain?

The doctor then took a paper out. "We found that Yuma had several wounds in different parts of his body. We also discovered they were self-inflicted." The doctor then took out some pictures and gave them to Akari.

Akari opened her eyes wide. The pictures showed the different wounds he had by that time. She couldn't stop the tears that were threatening to fall. Seeing her brother, like this, it hurt. "B-but I thought you couldn't take pictures from the patients without their or their tutor's permission."

"We couldn't, until last year. Many different cases of mutilation came during last year's Christmas week. Most of them were from domestic violence, and the patients refused to be taken pictures becuase they were scared. Since then, the Health Department decided to take pictures of any patients that crossed a certain line. Yuma's wounds crossed it."

Akari nodded understanding and looked at the pictures once more. More tears fell from her eyes. Astral was in almost the same condition. While he wasn't crying like Akari was, he couldn't even speak or think correctly. His eyes completely glued to the pictures in Akari's hands. How could this have happened? His mind thought over and over again.

Akari looked away from the pictures and handed them to the doctor. "Please take them. I just can't see them anymore."

The doctor took the pictures understanding her feeling. "I know this is really hard for you Ms. Akari, but-"

"Where is my brother? I want to see him." Akari interrupted, leaving surprised not just the doctor, but Astral too.

"I'm sorry to say that you can't. Yuma is in observation right now. No visitors are allowed until tomorrow." The man in white said. Akari was about to speak but he interrupted her. "I recommend that you go to your house, have a good night sleep and return tomorrow. After all, Yuma needs his sister more than ever, and it's better that she's healthy than sick."

Akari wanted to say something, but no words left her throat. He was right. She needed to sleep, she was certainly tired. But she also was worried for her brother.

"Don't worry Ms. Akari. Yuma is in good hands." The doctor said with a tender smile, giving Akari the reassurness she needed.

"Arigatou, Dr. Takede. I will take my leave." Akari bowed sightly with gratitude and left the room.

After Akari left, the doctor sighed. "I'm sorry Ms. Akari. But maybe... I won't be able to save him..." The doctor whispered.

But there was one thing he didn't notice. The blue entity was still in the room and heard clearly what the doctor said. His mismatched eyes were wide in horror. His heart nearly broke. No... No! Yuma... That was one of those moments when he wished he could be visible, so he could talk to other people. He then left the room, forced by an invisible force. (Namely the Key.)

After leaving the Hospital, Akari went dirrectly to her house. Her grandmother was already asleep, so she went to sleep too. But before she reached her room she looked at her brother's room and decided to go there. She entered and looked around, nostalgia suddenly filling her. She sat in her brother's bed and cried silently. She soon lay down and hugged the pillow, mumbling how sorry she was.

Astral watched her cry and felt the urge to cry with her. Mostly because he knew that she will be more broken after she discovers the truth. Thinking about it made him feel worse. He didn't wanted to accept that maybe Yuma... Could die... Tears escaped his eyes, but he did nothing to stop them. He stayed there floating until Akari's sobs weren't heard. When he decided to move, Akari was asleep in Yuma's bed, hugging tightly the pillow, with trails of tears in her face.

He smiled sadly. Under the pale moonlight, he could see how much resemblance Akari and Yuma had. This made him remember the time when Yuma cried with him in the attic. He felt the same nostalgia when he saw Akari. Astral sighed and turned away, not wanting to see Akari's sad face. He then went to the attic, where he thought he could think more clearly.

He was wrong.

Instead of being able to calm down, he only felt sadder. Watching the attic only brought memories of Yuma. The pictures he saw just a few hours ago flashed through his mind.

"Those wounds..." Astral couldn't help but feel angry at the fact that Yuma was hiding things again. But it wasn't like the time Yuma hid about Shingetsu's real personality; this time it was because Yuma hid somenthing so dangerous, something that could even kill him! And Yuma didn't even cared!

Soon, Astral's anger was replaced by a huge guilt and sadness. Even if Yuma hid it, he shouldn't be angry. This was something completely different. If Yuma did those wounds on purpose then it was obvious he wanted to hide them. But why? Why did Yuma hurt himself? It doesn't make sense! Why was Yuma so depressed? What made him be like this? He couldn't understand! Why? Why?!

Astral felt his cheeks getting wet. He touched them only to find out he was crying. He felt so confused, so sad, so hurt, so guilty... He wanted to help Yuma, he wanted to make him feel better. But now Yuma was in the Hospital, Yuma was hurt.

Astral couldn't take it anymore, he only wished to dissappear. But like that other time he couldn't. Not as long as Yuma wasn't wearing the Key. Astral couldn't neither dissappear nor appear if Yuma isn't wearing the Key. And right now, the one with the Key was Akari not Yuma. So he had to stay and bear the burden of pain, of guilt.

He closed his eyes tightly, hoping that when he had to open them it was already morning. Sadly, it didn't lasted long. He couldn't just close his eyes all night. He opened his eyes again, welcoming the feelings of pain, sadness, guilt, sorrow and remembrance. Astral looked around the attic, memories of Yuma quickly following. He could remember Yuma's smile everytime they made a strategy together, what made him feel a little better. But soon, this cheerful memory was replaced by Yuma's sad face, making him feel worse than before.

The thought that maybe Black Mist's words were true scared him. What if all this time he really didn't notice Yuma's true feelings? How could he even forget Yuma was just a kid? Yuma had the right to live like every kid lives, yet he was forced to live a life of dangers. Maybe that was the reason of Yuma's deppression. Maybe Yuma couldn't take the burden of the everyday dangers. Then it was his own fault, right? Astral was the only one to blame.

"Black Mist was right. I did not even thought that maybe Yuma did not wanted a life like this one. I am the one to blame. If something happens to Yuma then it is my fault." He whispered to himself.

Astral looked around once more, the tears refusing to leave. More memories of Yuma came to him. It was like if all his life was only based on Yuma. But of course, it wasn't like he could remember something else. He closed his eyes and hugged himself in an attempt to get away the cold wind...

Wait... Cold wind?

He opened his eyes again, only to widen them. Golden gears surrounded him and a blue dessert was seen in the distance. He was inside the Key! But, how's that even possible?! He looked around, making sure he was seeing correctly. The gears, the desert... He was inside the Key, there was no doubt about it. But how...?

His question was answered way too soon, and it wasn't the answer he expected. His answer came in the way of a chuckle. But not just any chuckle, it was a dark one, a dark and evilish chuckle. Astral turned, facing the Number that was behind him.

"Ninety-Six..." He whispered, gaining a grin from the Number.

"Aren't you happy to see me, Astral? I thought you wished a time inside the Key!" The Number's grin grew wider.

"Yes, I indeed wished to do so... But, how do you know?" Astral asked narrowing his eyes.

"Oh, I have my ways." His grin was replaced by a smirk. "So, I heard that you broke our... Agreement."

Astral lowered his head. Yes, he did. He was about to apologize when he remembered Yuma's last words.

"He lied to me..."

He lied to him? But, who could Yuma be talking about? And why did he remembered that right now? He looked up, facing the smirking Number.

"Well, I apologize. But I just could not stay here doing nothing. I thought that maybe I could also help Yuma." Astral spoke. But his tone of voice wasn't that of an apology, it was more like if he was challenging the Number.

Black Mist's smirk never left. "I see... Well, I think now you see the consequences of doing so. I told you to stay away from Yuma, just to prevent this, and you go and ruin everything."

Astral didn't seemed surprised. In fact, there wasn't any emotion in his face. It was almost as if Black Mist's words weren't listened. Almost. "You are correct on that. I broke our agreement, and now I see the consequences..." Astral started. Black Mist's smirk grew wider. "But, if I may, I have a question of my own."

The dark entity raised an eyebrow, or whatever was supposed to be an eyebrow. "And what question is that?"

"How do you know? How do you always find a way to learn this things? You were not there, and Akari have not told anyone yet. So, tell me, how do you know this if you were not there to see it?" (Ok, Astral. It was just ONE question. )

Black Mist said nothing for a moment. After a couple of minutes in silence he started laughing. His laughter was so loud that it could be heard from the other side of the Key. (Thanks echo!) "You're such a fool! It was so fun messing with you two! I almost couldn't believe you fell so easily in my trick!"

The Number continued laughing, sending shivers down the Astralian's spine. "W-what do you mean?!"

"You thought I wanted to help that useless brat. Well, you were wrong! It was all part of my plan and you fell right into my trap."

Astral widened his eyes. "A t-trap?" Realization hit him and his surprise was replaced by anger. "You hurt Yuma! You were the one who made him suffer!"

The dark alien stopped laughing and gave an evil grin. "Yes, I did it. Poor little Yuma didn't even realized it. He was so sure I would help him." He started mocking Yuma. "'Please tell me! Did Astral really said that?' HA! It was so fun tricking him!"

Astral growled quietly, his anger increasing by the Number's actions. "You-! How could you?! He trusted you! And you betrayed him!" He yelled.

"Oh, please Astral! We both know this was going to happen. It was your mistake believing I could change ." The black alien smirked.

Astral was angrier than ever. How could he trust him?! That monster was going to pay for hurting Yuma! "Maybe. But your mistake was telling me your plan." Astral answered, adopting his calm attitude again. (Hiding feelings, aren't we Astral?)

Black Mist laughed once more. "Oh, no Astral! Believe me! I made no mistakes this time!"

"What do you mean?" Astral asked with narrowed eyes.

The Number smiled darkly. "You see, right now I can control Yuma at my own will. Maybe you want to think a little before doing something reckless."

"You can control Yuma?" The original spoke, a tint of fear in his voice.

"Oh, yes. I can. How do you think I was able to get near him? Little Yuma didn't even noticed I was pulling the strings." He chuckled. "And now he's facing the consequences."

"Stop hurting him Ninety-Six! Your fight is with me! Yuma has nothing to do!" Astral said, scared for Yuma's safety.

"You're wrong Astral. Yuma has to do even more than you think! Since the moment he became your host, since the moment he embarrassed me, he's going to pay for it!"

"Yuma is not my host! He is my partner and my friend! And it was not his fault! I told him to trick you! I am the one to blame. So leave him alone!" Astral yelled.

The evil Number smiled darkly. "Getting challenging, aren't we? You should watch out, darkness is luring around. Maybe it will find a pure heart to taint."

Astral backed a little. He understood what Black Mist said. The Number was referring to the Sargasso incident, when his heart was tainted by darkness. The thought both angered and scared him. Black Mist was playing with him, what made him get angrier; but he knew that if he lose control he could be tainted again, and this time there wouldn't be Yuma to fix it. And that scared him; Yuma needed him, so he couldn't afford to get tainted. Not now, not ever.

"Why the sudden silence? I thought you wanted to yell at me. C'mon, I won't judge you." The Number said teasingly.

"Silence! You are not the one to talk. I will not fall for your tricks! Release Yuma and you will not face the consequences of not doing so." Astral spoke with authority.

"Oh my! I'm so scared! I shall obey you, oh mighty Astral!" Ninety-Six said bowing mockingly. "Hehehe, do you really think I will obey you? You're a fool for thinking so!"

Astral had to breathe to not lose his temper. Black Mist was really trying to annoy him, and the Number was very close to accomplishing it. "I will say it one more time. Realease Yuma."

The monster laughed high and loud. "Never Astral! Never! Yuma is now my puppet, is my ticket to accomplish my plans. I will never release him!" The Number spoke, and an idea crossed his mind making him grin like a madman. "You know Astral, why don't I show you how powerful I am? Maybe you'll like a demonstration of my power over Yuma..."

Astral shivered. "No. Black Mist do not do it! Do not dare hurt Yuma!"

"Oh, but I already did!" The madman- err, I mean, the Number outstretched his hands and a wave of power was felt.

Astral opened his eyes wide, fear written all over his face. For a minute of two nothing happened. "What have Black Mist done?" He soon regretted thinking that.

"... Stop please! It hurts... Please!"

Tears threatened to get out. That was Yuma's voice. He was suffering. "Stop this! Stop hurting him!"

"Oh, Astral, why should I? Aren't you enjoying Yuma's voice? I sure do.~" Black Mist spoke, a sadist smile in his face.

Astral looked horrified at the Number. "How can you say that?! This is not enjoyfull at all!" A scream interrupted his thoughts, making him looke above.

"Please! Make it stop! It hurts... Please..."

He could hear Yuma's voice broken, as if he was going to cry. Astral couldn't bear hearing Yuma's voice like that, he just couldn't. He wanted to get away, he wanted to go help Yuma, but he couldn't. He was about to leave, to float away but Black Mist's tentacles kept him in place.

"Where do you think you're going? You're not planing to leave so soon, right?" The Number spoke while his tentacles advanced imprisoning the blue entity. "Don't ruin the fun Astral. Stay here, with me, and let's listen to the beautiful symphony Yuma's giving us."

Astral wanted to reply, he wanted to scream at the black entity to leave Yuma alone. But not words left his throat. His mind was very bussy worrying about Yuma's condition. He kept hearing Yuma's screams, what was begining to be a cruel torture to him.

"P-please... Someone... H-help me... Pl-please... Stop this... It h-hurts... It hurts so m-much..."

Black Mist was grinning madly. His eyes full of sadism. Astral could barely breathe. He was already crying, and he was so anxious and scared that his mind wasn't thinking straight. Black Mist held him there for what felt like hours, forcing him to listen Yuma's suffering. He couldn't escape, he couldn't leave, he couldn't even move. Even if Black Mist's tentacles weren't imprisoning him, he would have stayed there, frozen.

"P-Pleas-se... S-some-eone... H-h-help... P-please... A-Astral..."

Astral opened his eyes wide. His heart skipped a beat. Yuma was calling him. Yuma needed him. But Yuma's voice was so weak, so weak that it was barely a whisper. He waited to hear Yuma's voice again, but it never came. Yuma's suffering had finished, or maybe Yuma couldn't take it anymore and finally gave up. That thought froze Astral's body. And it seemed the being beside him noticed that.

"Oh, don't you worry Astral! Yuma's not dead... Yet." The black entity kept that sadist smile that was begining to anger Astral. "C'mon Astral! Don't give me that look! Didn't you enjoy Yuma's symphony? I surely did!" The Number spoke getting near the astralian.

Astral couldn't resist the anger he was feeling, and with his frustration on top of it he just blow off. "How can you say such a thing Black Mist?! You are more heartless than I could have thought of! Why do you insist on hurting Yuma?! Are you such a coward that you need to refuge in someone else?!"

Astral never expected what was coming next, proved by his surprised face. Black Mist slapped him, right in the face. The Numner was indeed angry at Astral's coment, his eyes jolting with furry.

"Don't you EVER dare call me a coward again! My methods may seem cowardly, but I assure you I'm not!" The Number was so angry that it seemed he was ready to kill the astralian.

Astral didn't say a word. He was shocked, surprised. He never expected the Number to do something like that. Yes, the Number tried to hurt him before, but he never saw him so aggressive.

In his anger the Number throwed the blue entity against one of the gears, hurting him badly. The black entity looked at the other with hatred and then left the Key, whispering his last words. "I will come for you later. I haven't forgoten my revenge... You'll pay for this Astral!"

Astral closed his eyes in pain, trying to recover from the Number's aggressiveness. When he opened his eyes again he found himself in the attic. The sun was begining to rise, but it was still dark enough to stay asleep. He stood and looked around the attic. The pain in his back told him that Black Mist appearance wasn't a product of his mind. Which scared him because he now knew Yuma was in big danger.

He looked around again, this time with sadness. He feared for Yuma. He feared that Yuma would continue suffering. Yuma was just a kid, he didn't deserve that. Black Mist was going way to far by hirting Yuma like that. The simple thought angered him. Bit at the same time it made him feel guilty. He couldn't stop Black Mist from hurting Yuma. He was a failure. Or at least, that's the way he felt.

"I do not posses the power to help Yuma... I wish I could, but there is nothing I can do..." Astral sighed and moved closer to the half-open window. He looked outside for a couple of moments, watching the sun rise.

Then he looked away, this felt so empty without Yuma. He noticed a piece of paper beside Yuma's parents' picture. He looked at it and read it lowly, almost in a whisper.

"How can I have power when I don't want it...?"

Astral smiled sadly. Those notes were the ones who started all this, so it was their fault everything that happened. Still, he couldn't blame nor hate them. For some reason he felt that those notes had a hidden message, but maybe he was wrong, who knows. He took a deep sigh and waited. It was the only think he could do after all...
