Chapter Four: Hogwarts, A New History
January 5, 1998
"Are you sure that no one can get in?" Hermione asked Harry for the fifteenth time as they sat in the new carriage that was added to the Hogwarts express. Luna and Neville sat with them to enjoy some peace and quiet until they reached the castle for the new term. Their families had not wanted them to go back, especially with Dumbledore still there, but it wasn't worth the hassle to stay behind. Plus too, Harry and Charlus had many plans in place to make sure they would be alright. "Warding was never your strong suit prior to getting your new powers." She added.
"Love," Harry began patiently, "no one is getting in here without my permission. Or Chuckie's for that matter." He added, eying his brothers new signet ring. "I can't believe you wanted Slytherin." He threw out and Charlus smirked.
"It makes more sense for a Black to be a Slytherin then a Potter," He said mockingly with a roll of his eyes. "I mean, could you imagine the shit storm that we would get if you became Lord Slytherin?"
"I thought you didn't care about what others thought?" Luna asked from her spot in Neville's lap. The outside world would have been shocked to see such a display, as neither were overly affectionate in public, but the others were used to it.
"I don't," Charlus admitted, then he smiled at her." but you forget, Wizarding Britain is filled with sheep who do care. And until public perception changes, we'll have to play their silly little game. Except, of course, in the Wizengamot."
"How do you figure?" Hermione raised an eyebrow.
"If I did the maths correctly, Harry and I have a large voting block."
"You did," Harry agreed. "Although, the alliance votes -both established and potential ones- haven't been counted."
"How does the system for the Wizengamot work?" Hermione looked at her companions curiously. "I don't think any of you have said."
"Well, to start with, there are fifty five seats in total," Neville kicked off the conversation. He, like Susan and Luna, were well versed in pureblood protocols as they were from older families, though Luna's family weren't as old as the other two. Harry Charlus knew as much as they did thanks to Fawkes, so they would add their views if they had an opening.
"The number apparently pays tribute to the settlement of fifty five wizards and witches that were our ancestors," Neville continued. "though there has always been arguments over the validity of that number."
"Are there no records on this matter?"
"A lot of them have been destroyed over time," Susan murmured. "Whatever wasn't destroyed is kept amongst the old families, mostly because it pertains to their family histories."
"Ok, so there are fifty five seats, does every seat have only one vote?"
"No," Harry shook his head. "each class is different. There are the Ancient seats, the Noble seats, and the Minor seats. The ancients have five votes a seat - one vote for each child they had which on average was between three to five as some people claim. The nobles have three and the minor houses have one."
"Now that doesn't seem fair, especially with the total votes for the ancients reaching sixty-five," Neville took over. "however, not all the seats are active. The nobles have twenty-two seats with the total votes reaching sixty-six though only seventeen are active. The minor houses have twenty votes, all of which are active. The grand total of the votes currently active is one hundred and one votes out of one hundred and fifty-one. The ancient seats used to have thirteen families but now only six seats are active. Four of which, happen to be in this compartment." He gestured to himself, Susan, Charlus, and Harry.
"There are seven seats Nev," Harry corrected his friend who looked puzzled. Susan did as well but Luna merely smiled. Charlus showed no reaction and Hermione raised an eyebrow. "The Weasley seat was considered inactive because no member of the house could access it, thanks to Richard Weasley losing control of it in a card game. No one from the other ancient families could use it because the family was still around and they didn't have permission. Romulus Malfoy, who won the seat, was unable to use it because his house was not of the same status as The Weasley's."
"That still doesn't explain -" Neville cut himself off with a groan as he palmed his face. "You have their seat don't you?"
"We do," Charlus nodded before pausing briefly. He shared a look with his brother who nodded slightly. "Septimus doesn't want it back and has asked us to consolidate it with our ancient votes."
Neville, Susan, and Luna stared at him and Harry in surprise. While it wasn't unheard of for a seat to belonging to one family to go to another one - especially if there was a lack of male heirs in one of those families - but to give it away while you had blood relatives to take up the mantle after not having it for three generations? That was unheard of and would invite a lot of trouble if handled improperly.
"He feels that Arthur is not worthy of it because he's one of Dumbledore's men through and through," Harry added. "he also doesn't feel comfortable with Ginny, Ron, and Percy being the only heirs left to potentially take it."
"So Bill decided to leave the family then?" Luna asked then continued when she received confirmation, "good for him. What name did he choose?"
"Solomon," Charlus smiled a little. "Bill's always loved that name and had considered naming his first born son that but decided on using it for his new surname. He actually offered to take Fleur's name since there was no male members of her family, apart from her father, Jean-Sebastian, but she said she always wanted to take her husbands name. She might compromise and give one of their sons her maiden name though."
"I thought Veela only had girls?" Hermione frowned at him.
"Full grown Veela's do but half and quarter Veela's can have boys though its not very common."
"Anyway," Harry added, attempting to get them back on track. "between Charlus and I, we have fifteen ancient votes."
"Twenty five if you factor in my family and Susan's," Neville threw out with Susan nodding. "and however many other votes you have."
"Forty-two votes from the noble houses if you exclude Hermione's vote," Harry said and Hermione thought back to that day in Gringotts. She had taken an inheritance test while they were at Gringotts -at Harry's insistence- to see if there was anything for her. She and her parents didn't think so but she did it anyway.
Surprisingly, her family were descended from squibs in the Dagworth-Granger family, a noble house who rose to prominence by producing many powerful charms, like the permanent sticking charm, and powerful potions, like the Draught of the living death.
"I remember reading the name in a book and I thought there might be something there," Harry had shrugged off the questions at the time, but Hermione caught the glint in his eyes and knew he was hiding something. She questioned him in private and he told her that if she accepted the responsibility of ladyship, it would provide her and her parents with even more protection until they were married. Because though she was his intended, she would still be looked down upon and Harry predicted that a repeat of fourth year would happen again.
"They will try to hurt you - maybe even try to kill you." He told her. "Especially Molly and Ginny. Not that they have the skill to take you or me but it wouldn't hurt to have more cover."
Harry wasn't included her vote just yet as they weren't married and he didn't want to pressure her into giving it over. Hermione rejoined the conversation when her future brother in law spoke, "There's also seven votes from the minor houses. So that's what, seventy-four votes out of a hundred and one?"
"Merlin that's more than just a block, you damn well own the Wizengamot!" Susan exclaimed at her boyfriend who grinned at her. "You could demolish whatever laws you wanted."
"We know." The twins said in unison.
"But won't someone try to censor you?" Hermione bit her lip.
"No," Luna shook her head, a serious expression on her face. "in order for the Wizengamot to be functional, more than half of the current votes must be active. I'm sure that people now know that Harry and Charlus have laid claim to their spoils and someone must have done the math. Long story short; people know that they have a lot of power and if they censor them, their votes cannot be used. That would essentially leave the governing body in a state of limbo and the Ministry would no longer exists until the censor is lifted."
"The Ministry is an off shoot of the Wizengamot, at least that's how it started out." Harry explained when Hermione looked confused. "The Wizengamot was formed to help protect the wizarding populace and they formed the Ministry to provide jobs and be their eyes and ears in the community. The Ministry answers to The Wizengamot, which gives it power, so if the Wizengamot is not operating properly or at all..."
"The Ministry suffers," Hermione added when he trailed off. "How long do censors last?"
"It depends on how long the censor is requested for." Susan replied crisply. "Even if it is just for one session, that is one entire month with no one making and upholding any laws before the next session. Can you imagine the chaos that would take place in that time frame?"
Apart from the twins, everyone else shuddered.
"It won't get to that point." Harry nodded his agreement with his brothers words. "No one could afford another war so quickly after the last, especially since there is no one to lead them and those with influence are gone."
A comfortable silence ensued after Charlus spoke as they began to relax. It wasn't until sometime later that Harry broke it.
"So, how are your parents doing Nev?"
Asking a question about Frank and Alice Longbottom would have upset Neville before, but now he was smiling brightly.
"Oh they're doing wonderfully," He gushed at his god brothers who grinned. "Dads a bit grumpy because he can't walk around a lot and mum shakes from time to time but they're back and that's all that matters."
Before he died, Sirius had discovered a spell in one of his ancestors journals that essentially trapped someone within their mind. To him it sounded almost exactly like the condition of the Longbottoms. Given that Bellatrix was born a Black, it wasn't illogical to think that she had read about it before she was caught. He shared this information with very little others but nothing was done until after the twins had gained their powers.
They snuck into Saint Mungo's and gradually undid what had been done to Neville's parents. They snuck the Longbottoms out and placed Golems in their place so no one would notice that they were gone. It was a testament to how well that plan worked as no one was able to tell the difference. This was a method that they would use again for the guards of Azkaban during the assault on the island.
Do to the lack of a lot of physical activity, both Alice and Frank's muscles were not in the shape that they once were. Even with a good potion regiment, it would be awhile before they would be in good enough shape to walk without the need for canes or wheel chairs.
"They want all of you to visit whenever you can, especially during the holidays," Neville continued, "Mum joked about neglecting her god motherly duties for the both of you and wants to make it up to you."
"We would be delighted," Harry smiled softly. Alice had taken up the mantle of being godmother for both twins when their other godmother, Marlene McKinnon, had been murdered along with her entire family. She also would have been their newest cousin as she was engaged to Sirius at the time this happened. "but let us deal with a meddlesome old man and that bastard he calls his spy. Then we can have some real fun."
Another beat of silence ensued as the ride continued, this one was filled with anticipation. While none of them doubted that the twins could hurt Snape and Dumbledore, it had been a long seven years since they started school and no one had the balls to take the two of them to task. The twins thought that the confrontation would be all the more sweeter because of that.
The returning students filed into the great hall, some eagerly, others warily. The majority had seen Harry and Charlus board the train and were waiting to see what would happen next. Or in some cases, waiting to deliver a fatal shot at the two like Snape and some of the older students.
The twins strolled in with their allies beside them and several things happened at once. The doors slammed shut after a loud gong sounded, Dumbledore was ejected from his seat, Snape and a lot of the students from various houses drew their wands - in Snape's case, his new one- all screaming out their spells.
The majority fell to the ground unconscious, but two were still standing and their spells traveled towards the group. Two swords appeared in Harry's hands as he deflected the spells. Charlus banished the two assailants from the Gryffindor table into the wall with his hand.
"Hogwarts: Lockdown!" The twins roared at the same time.
'It is done Lord Slytherin and Lord Gryffindor,' A voice was heard in the hall before another loud gong sounded again. Dumbledore gasped as he felt the control of the wards leave him and the doors to the great hall slammed shut.
"Remain in your seats," Harry hissed at the students and teachers. "as the heir of Godric Gryffindor, I command you to stay!" He continued when people started to stand up.
"Sit your arses down," Charlus snapped at the Slytherins who tried to help a few of their comrades out. "the heir of Salazar Slytherin so commands it."
"Hogwarts, restrict the staff and students to their positions," Harry growled when no one immediately complied. "even those who are already on the floor. Leave those who arrived with my brother and I alone."
'Yes lord Gryffindor.'
Harry and Charlus stomped their way over to Snape's unconscious body just as Dumbledore shouted at them.
"Leave him be!" He struggled to get to his feet but something was holding him back and the twins didn't look at him. The rest of the staff made to move but they were stuck as well.
"What we do with our property is our business, old man." Harry said coldly before Charlus gripped Snape by the shoulder and yanked him to his feet.
"Get up!" He snapped before slapping Snape hard enough across the face to wake him up. The dour man groaned and blinked at what he saw before he snarled.
"Potter!"
Charlus tossed him down the aisle between Slytherin and Ravenclaw before he could speak again.
"Its Black now ," Charlus snarled. "or in these walls, Lord Slytherin. Hogwarts, do I lie?" He asked towards the ceiling.
'No.'
"As if a pathetic half blood-"
"Aw Sevvy, you shouldn't be so hard on Tom and yourself," Charlus mock cooed at the potions master who growled. "Looking for this?" Charlus held up the wand he swiped from Snape when he noticed the man glancing around.
"Give that back!"
"Make me, you greasy haired bastard," Charlus grinned and the other man withdrew a knife from his robes and charged.
"Severus, no!" Dumbledore yelled again but to no avail as the potions master continued to run. Snape gave a cry of rage as he raised the knife over his head before bringing it down when he was in striking distance.
The blade tip stopped an inch shy of Charlus' head. Charlus peered at the man who appeared to be struggling with something.
"Lose your nerve Snivellus?" Harry asked curiously and the man glared at him and opened his mouth. Charlus snatched the knife out of his hand and back handed the man, causing him to fly back before landing to the floor and rolling away. "Made you look," Harry sang with a chuckle after the man stopped rolling. He looked at their group who merely gave him slightly dry looks.
"Harry, Charlus," Dumbledore began to plead but both boys stared at him with disinterest.
"Don't worry, we won't kill him," Harry murmured. "doesn't mean we won't make him hurt for all the shit he has done to our family, starting with using that foul word to hurt our mother and eventually getting her, our father, and my godfather killed."
"We know it was him who gave the prophecy - or at least part of it to old snake face," Charlus added when the old man began to protest. "We won't kill him - but he is no longer welcome in this institution or community."
Harry slammed his swords into the ground and moved towards his brother.
"As the children of James and Lily Potter," They spoke at the same time as a pale looking Snape finally stood since he was hit. "we hereby call in the life debt of one Severus Tobias Snape, Son of Tobias Edward Snape and Eileen Miriam Prince, which was owed to our Father, James Charlus Potter. The price we demand is not your life - but your knowledge and magic!"
There were gasps of horror as Snape levitated into the air and a began to shine with a bright light. Both Harry and Charlus shot a hand out towards the man and the light shot towards them.
"No!" Dumbledore roared as the twins began to absorb the magic of his trusted spy. "You must stop this!"
He of course, was ignored as the twins continued to take what they wanted until the glow began to recede. They cut off the stream of magic when it was all but removed and Snape dropped to the ground shaking. He was even paler and his eyes were slightly sunken in, but the twins gave him credit for not crying out.
"From this moment forward, you will have just enough magic to see magical things but never enough to use, especially if you mean harm to others," Harry held his hand out and Snape's face began to fill with a bit of life. "and because you have enough magic in your body, that means you must listen to us as we are your new masters by right of conquest."
Snape merely glared before spitting at Harry's feet.
"Defiant to the end," Charlus muttered to Harry before speaking in a louder voice, "You are to never harm any living being ever again. You are never to reach out to any other magical or discuss it with those not in the know."
"You are to never harm yourself or kill yourself," Harry picked up the conversation as the others just watched. The teachers had been mostly trying - and failing- to get out of their seats so they said nothing but they were horrified at what they were hearing and seeing. The headmaster had warned them that the twins might be angry but he said nothing about them be heirs to half of the founders! And he definitely didn't say that Snape still owed the Potter family a life debt. "You will live out the rest of your natural life until death claims you. Hopefully our family will not be as lenient as we are being to you in the afterlife."
Snape glared at him even more as people blinked at the thought of something being worse than what just happened.
"You know, in a way you've been right about us all along," Harry suddenly added to the surprise of many. "We are our father's children. Like our father, we never bowed down in the face of adversity. Like our father, we fight for what we believe in and we earned our place in this world, even if there were those who conspired against us," Harry strode forward, glaring at Dumbledore as he made his way over to Snape. "And like our father, we had the love of the most beautiful and courageous woman that ever lived: Lily Edith Potter. Something that you will never have." He sneered at Snape who flinched slightly.
Harry had left out the fact that his mother had long forgiven Snape for what he did when they were in school. She even considered making him godfather to their unborn sister named Raven Dorea Potter instead of Pettigrew. All this information had been gleaned from their parents journals that they wrote in until they died. Their mother never knew of Snape's ultimate betrayal.
"I can't wait to see your death printed in the papers," Snape hissed at him, "the both of you!" He added with a growl.
Harry merely smiled and Charlus laughed.
"You won't," Harry's smile became more sinister before he punted Snape away. Snape flew through the air before he was enveloped in green fire and disappeared.
"What have you done?" Dumbledore whispered though his voice carried throughout the hall.
"I removed a piece of scum that should have never been allowed near children after he became a member of Riddle's pack of bigots," Harry snarled at the old man. "don't give me that look! You know damn well how the dark mark is earned and what Snivellus did to earn it! Let's not forget that you knew that he was actively recruiting students from all houses for the dark lord and you let him! What was your reasoning again? Oh yes, 'they would see the error of their ways once they got in too deep.' What a load of tripe."
"How many people have you allowed to die in the hopes that those animals could be redeemed?" Charlus asked pointedly. "How many have you allowed to die for the so called Greater Good?"
Dumbledore said nothing.
"Answer me," Charlus said calmly. "for once in your pathetic existence, answer me. Answer to all of us."
Still, Dumbledore said nothing.
Charlus looked over to his brother who nodded. Dumbledore was freed from the magical hold he was in and then he was jerked back into his chair and bound once more. Charlus retrieved a vial from his cloak and walked over to Dumbledore.
"Open your mouth," He ordered when he was a few feet from the old man who refused. "This is your last chance." Susan and Hermione made their way over to the boys. Neville and Luna made their way over at a slower pace.
"Lord Slytherin, what are ye doing?" Professor McGonagall's Scottish brogue stopped Charlus short of what he was about to do.
"Exercising my right as co-owner of this castle to question this man in regards to his criminal negligence." Charlus spoke calmly once more. He had his issues with the head of Gryffindor house but he respected her more than he did Albus Dumbledore. "Negligence, that has cost the lives of many, and scarred the souls of many more."
He pinched Dumbledore's crooked nose when the old man scowled at him.
"I gave him a chance to answer - he refused." Dumbledore struggled for breath as time went on. "And this way," Dumbledore gasped and Charlus gave the man three drops of the truth serum. "we can get more than half truths and evasions." He looked over to her, raising a eyebrow in challenge.
McGonagall pursed her lips into a thin line but said nothing. None of the other teachers did either for they had nothing to challenge the twins with. Charlus merely nodded his head and waited for the potion to take effect.
"What is your name?" Harry asked after a moment.
"Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore."
"When were you born?"
"The first of August, 1881."
With the security questions out of the way, Harry asked, "Where is Gellert Grindelwald currently?"
Many people looked confused by this question as the man had been dead since before Voldemort's time. The answer blew that thought out of the water.
"In the prison known as Nurmengard."
"Why is he still alive?"
"I let him live."
"So you let a man who waged a war across Europe, who killed countless people and their families, live?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He was my lover, I felt that he could be redeemed."
That answer drew gasps of shock and people began to whisper amongst one another.
"Is this the same method you used in regards to Tom Riddle and his followers?"
"Only Tom's followers. Tom was irredeemable."
"And how far have you gone to try and redeem them?"
"I allowed them to push forth whatever legislation they wanted. I allowed them to abuse those of non magical birth. I-I-" Here the old man tried to fight the potion, "I allowed them to murder entire families in the hope that they would see the error of their ways."
No one said a word, mostly from being in shock at the so called logic that Dumbledore expressed.
"Rubeus Hagrid was sent to Godric's Hollow to retrieve whomever survived, did you send him there?"
"Yes."
"Did you know that Lily and James were in trouble?"
"Yes."
"Why did you not send help before sending Hagrid?"
"I needed to let the prophecy involving Tom, the Potter twins, and young Neville Longbottom to play out. I would not change their fates."
The twins and Neville tensed at the answer. They had, of course, entertained the idea that the old man may have had allowed their families to be harmed but they never actually thought it was the actual answer. The only thing stopping Harry and Charlus from striking the old man was the fact that their girlfriends stood in front of them. No matter how much they were tempted to, they wouldn't hurt their girls if they could help it.
Neville, on the other hand, was not so restrained, mainly because Luna wasn't going to try and hold him back. He charged with a roar and a clenched fist. He managed to get in three punches before Charlus wrapped his arms under Neville's armpits and pulled him back.
"Let me go!" Neville bellowed, eyes shining with tears of anger as he flailed about. "My parents were hurt because of him! We all suffered because of him!" He kicked out towards Dumbledore but missed.
"Killing him won't change that," Charlus murmured softly. "He deserves to pay but death would be a release, not a punishment." Looking over his shoulder, as Neville stopped fighting, he said, "was that enough for you, Madam Bones?"
The space near the great hall shimmered as several disillusioned people revealed themselves with Amelia at the front.
"Yes Lord Slytherin, that will be enough." She gestured for the aurors to seize Dumbledore just as Harry released the old man from the chair. He hoisted the man up and pushed him towards the aurors who dodged the blood he spat out. It wasn't a malicious act, Dumbledore couldn't see anything in front of him as his eyes began to swell, but the aurors grabbed him roughly all the same.
Amelia gave her family a nod before leaving with her men who were reading Dumbledore his rights.
"That's enough excitement for one night, I should think." Harry intoned before waving his hand, causing the feast that was prepared to appear. "Eat up and head to your dormitories right after you are finished. You all deserve the rest." He and the others around him disappeared in a flash of green fire. Everyone was so focused them that they never noticed that the assailants who tried to hurt them disappeared in a less dramatic fashion.
Apologies for the lateness of this chapter but life can be a massive bitch when you least expect it. Not my best work but hopefully you enjoy it all the same. Thank you to all who have reviewed, followed and favorite this story, I appreciate it.
Next chapter will be the last one and it is currently being written and revised.
