The Master assembled all his vampires for this. After Jessie's betrayel, and now this, he wanted all to know the penalty for betrayel. This building had once been a church. The Master desecrated it before his ritual to open the Hellmouth. Some of the parishoners were turned, together all vampires killed and ate the others. There was still a large wooden cross. The Master planned to nail Angel, Spike, and Darla to the cross. One by one until each had sufferred an excrutiating vampire death. The three knew there were too many vampires, and others, for them to escape. Then Illyria came. She easily killed vampires and told her three allies to escape. Illyria went after the Master. He might be strong for a vampire, but he was still just a vampire, almost as weak as a human. Except he wasn't. The Master was stronger than Illyria. She didn't understand how this could be possible. The Master threw Illyria through a wall. Illyria was tempted to go back. But the Master couldn't follow. Illyria saw Angel, Spike, and Darla escape with the Codex. She decided to temporarily retreat, and live to fight another day.
