Enemy POV:
I bit my lip in anticipation. From the top of the building across the street, I could easily see the school. Now, all I had to do is wait. My orders were simple: dispose of the saviours of Olympus.
Sounds simple on paper. Sounded like a walk in the park – just tap them with a couple arrows, and bam, job well done. I would be at the top, the best of the best. We've been trying for months, all of us. The demigods and monsters still against Olympus.
I spat at the ground. Olympus. That scrawny sea scum could've gone with our cause, won the war for us, but instead, he gave Luke the knife. And to think, at one point, Luke was my idol. I tighten my grip on my bow in anger. We were so close. And now, we're in hiding. Ducking way from the campers, the ones that we brain-washed by the gods. Idiots, all of them.
Finally, after hours of waiting, I could see them. The two saviours. Well, technically, the sea scum was officially titled "saviour", but he would be no where without the bitch, and everyone knows it.
So, kill both.
I only had one shot at this. If they saw me, everything would be ruined. I straightened my bow, ready to take the shot. Damn it. They just had to turn the corner. I couldn't be positive to hit them with a straight shot, and I'm not about to let myself get caught.
They were standing in front of the school, nearing the other kids. I fought internally with myself. I could shoot them – it was a perfectly clear shot. But, there were a lot of witnesses. A lot of people turning their heads, screaming, and with a lot of people, there is a greater chance of being seen. I lowered my bow, furious.
(no plot line here, ditch it)
Chrystal POV:
I was still in slight shock as we neared the cabin. Firstly, there was Annabeth leaving school early. Okay, not altogether shocking, but still strange. Then there's the bull in the park and Percy's glowing baseball bat. If that doesn't count as strange, I don't know what does. Not to mention the brownie, and the bull disappearing, and the growls from everywhere, and the truck that wasn't a truck but now is a truck that drove us into a tree and somehow landed us across the country.
My head was still dizzy. Maybe this was all a dream. That's it. I just have to pinch myself, then I'll wake up during English or something. Yep, I just fell asleep during class. That's it.
I pinch my arm hard, causing myself to let out a quiet "Ow!" Annabeth looked back at me sympathetically, then fell back to match my pace.
"Sorry you got dragged into all of this. We should be able to get you back to San Francisco by tomorrow morning." She assured me kindly. I offered her a small smile in return. All of us, save Percy, still had our schoolbags over our shoulders. For some wild reason, I felt a rush of fear of not doing my homework. As if that was the biggest issue at the moment. Annabeth was looking at the horizon, where I could hear the soothing lapse of waves. Percy was the first to reach the cabin, and he unlocked it strangely, as if, when he tapped the door, a rush of blue light fluttered across it. I had an itching feeling that if anyone else tried to open that same door, it wouldn't work.
It was much bigger on the inside than I thought it would be. Though it was old, there was still a fresh sort of feel to it, as if though it was rarely used, it was always routinely cleaned. There were about six bunks pushed against the wall, a mini fridge, a large microwave, a small bathroom, and what looked like a stock of glowing-bronze items. I got a bad feeling from them and elected to not stand too close to it. Damion also looked interested in the cabin, glancing around at the windows and the strange, small rainbow fountain with a stack of golden coins beside it. Percy and Annabeth looked altogether unconcerned about anything in the cabin aside from the bronze things, which they were sorting through, muttering to themselves about a need to re-stock.
"Hey, guys," Percy pulled Damion and I from our slight stupor. "There's a landline over there if you want to call your parents."
I pulled out my cellphone. "Oh, it's fine, I'll just use my own." Percy winced slightly at the phone.
"Er… um…" He seemed to be floundering around for something to say when Annabeth stepped in.
"Bad reception. The landline's fine, though." She said in a tone that suggested we don't question her, even though by screen said four bars. Damion scowled at the phone before picking it up. From what I could tell, he was explaining to his very worried and flustered mother that he was spending the night at Chuck's. Close enough to an excuse.
I, too, dialed my mother. She was never one to panic too much, so when I said I was staying at Annabeth's tonight, she just told me to make sure to finish my homework.
When I hung up the phone, I saw Annabeth and Percy sitting beside each other on a bottom bunk. Annabeth had an expensive laptop out with a glowing blue symbol on it. She was typing furiously, and Percy's eyebrows were scrunched up in rapt attention.
"So, I found a program that can track monsters across the country. Right now," Annabeth was saying in a low voice to Percy, "There are about six hell hounds leaving San Francisco. If they're all gone by tomorrow morning, we'll go back on Mrs. O'Leary and pick up my stuff. Shouldn't take more than ten minutes." Annabeth muttered.
"I'll take your word for it, Wise Girl. Those just look like red dots to me." Percy replied, leaning back against the wall. Annabeth had a shadow of a smile on her face.
"Seaweed Brain." She murmured back. He shot her a wide grin, then a slight look of concern.
"You gunna call your dad?" He asked as though he was walking through a minefield.
Annabeth gave a hollow laugh. "Do you really think this is the first time something like this has happened?" Percy took that as a reply, so he got up and walked to the mini fridge.
"I got three froze pizzas and six cans of diet coke." He rolled his eyes. "Mr. D must've been in charge of stock. That would explain the other four bottles of grape juice… You guys like pizza?" He asked Damion and I. I nodded while Damion shrugged. "Awesome." With that, he popped the first pizza in the microwave and let it cook. It was almost unnerving, the way he adapted so quickly to what had just happened.
"Is this normal for you guys? All this cabin stuff and like… everything?" I asked, referring to what had just happened today. The pair glanced at each other before replying.
"I suppose, sometimes, yeah, this is basically our lives." Percy replied, watching the microwave.
"Damion, Chrystal, you have to understand that we're classed as dangerous. Percy's been expelled from… what, six, seven schools?"
"Does pre-school count?"
"I suppose…"
"Seven then," Percy scrunched up his eyebrows, thinking. "No, eight."
"And I ran away when I was seven." Annabeth added. I was shocked. First, Percy, as nice as he may seem, is some sort of bad boy delinquent kid. And Annabeth? She loved her family, as far as I knew. Why would she run away? I was about to rudely pry when the microwave dinged. Percy took the pizza out and put in on the table before shoving a second one in.
Percy could eat. I don't know where he put it all. I mean, he was a lean guy, muscular, but definitely not chubby. Yet he had at least one pizza to himself and was working his way through a third before Annabeth and Damion beat him to finishing. I had always thought Annabeth as a person to watch her health and whatnot, but that seemed to not be the case. Although she didn't eat as much as her boyfriend, she easily ate more than Damion and I. I suspected that whatever they did out of school – the glowing baseball bat and all that year-long camp business – was a lot of work.
I had never spent a night at Annabeth's house. In fact, I rarely went over to her place. The only time I really did was back when I was really struggling in math, so she spent hours tutoring me. If we ever hung out outside of school, it would be at an ice cream parlour or the movies.
So I was very alarmed by the relentless thrashing from her bunk.
We turned in early after any topic at conversation wore thin and the couple were hardly keeping their eyes open. Damion collapsed in the top bunk and fell asleep in seconds. Percy took the top bunk beside him, and I saw a flash of bronze before he had turned over, asleep. Annabeth and I took the beds underneath. They were comfortable and warm. In another situation, this cabin would be really nice, with the soft sound of waves lapping the shore outside the window. Right now, however, it was almost terrifying.
"Night, Crystal. Sorry about all of this again. We'll be back in San Fran tomorrow morning." Annabeth gave me a small smile. I returned it, calming slightly. Finally, I drifted off to sleep.
"No… No! Percy! No!" Annabeth was thrashing around, her blankets knotting around her and hair tossed in front of her face. She looked like she was having a horrible nightmare, and I had no clue what to do. Was this normal? I started to sit up, to maybe… comfort her? Wake her up? When Percy jumped down from his bunk and crouched in front of hers. He didn't seem to notice me awake.
He smoothed her hair out of her face. "Annabeth…" He said soothingly. "Annabeth…" Her eyes shot open, and she immediately collapsed into Percy's arms, shaking. He held her tightly, running his hand through her hair.
"P-Percy…" I was surprised to hear Annabeth so close to tears.
"Just a nightmare, Annabeth." He replied. "It's okay. We're together."
"Not just a nightmare, Percy, you know that…" Annabeth mumbled into his shoulder.
"Yeah. I had one, too." With that reply, Annabeth pulled Percy into her bed and started to untangle the blankets.
There was nothing sexual about the way they were laying together, holding on tightly in the single bed. It was comforting, like they needed each other as more than a boyfriend or girlfriend, but as a best friend, the only person in the world that understands the other. Annabeth had said they had known each other for years, long before they started going out. The way they acted around each other screamed best friends just as loud as romantic relationship.
I would guess that Annabeth and Percy were the kind of couple that had a crush on each other for years, and everyone but themselves knew it. Like, all those guys at camp or whatever were probably betting on who would make the first move, or celebrating the day it became obvious that they were together. I bet that there were also some guys and girls that were dreading the day it happened, too. I don't tend to think about it, but both of them are pretty attractive.
