Chapter 508
Quentin Travers arrived in Sunnydale shortly after the perpetual darkness began. He wanted to visit Rupert Giles' grave, but there was pressing business ahead. Quentin went to see Buffy and Jenny at Giles' apartment. The Chalice of Life was there. This looked like an actual Chalice, except for one sharp edge that could drain blood into this cup.

Buffy: So, how does this work? I trick the Master into drinking poison from this cup?
Quentin: You're not far off. According to the Codex prophecies time goes on until June 6th of this year.
Jenny: Are you saying that this book, which predicts everything from the beginning of time until the end of all life, only goes another 17 days?
Quentin: According to Wesley Wyndam-Price, yes. This Chalice might be our last chance.
Buffy: Again, how does it work?
Quentin: Before the final battle, the slayer's friends and allies each prick themselves and let a little of their blood go into the Chalice of life. The slayer drinks the blood, and fights the Master.
Buffy: Gross.
Quentin: If you fail to kill the Master, he will drink your blood, with the other blood. And it will destroy the Master and his minions.
Buffy: Okay. Dying isn't plan A but, good to know that if I fail, I take him down with me.
Quentin: There's one more thing. Those who give their blood need to do so voluntarily, and they need to know the risk. It's possible you can kill the Master in combat. But, if not, only the sacrifice of many will ave this world. It will be the energy that defeats the Master, their sacrifice. If you fail, everyone who gave their blood will die.
