Disclaimer: I DON'T OWN THE HUNGER GAMES
Cato POV:
I watch as Clove takes her throwing position. I look in curiosity at Beetee's wire bound around her favorite knife. A knife that I know is for easy throwing and long distance. At first I think that she's aiming for Finnick or Johanna, but then I see her look up at the cloudy mass that is the sky.
"What are you doing?" I finally ask her. I don't know if she'll hear me though, when she focuses on throwing everything in the world banishes except her, the knife, and her target.
"Something that has to be done," she responds, glancing over at me and kissing my cheek. She looks up once more and throws. I understand now. For a split-second, the knife is in slow motion, cutting through the air, I take this time to look over at Clove, who looks at triumph at what she accomplished. I stared at her for a second, then time unfroze and a deafening sound fills me ears. There's a burst of light and then I'm thrown backwards. I land on my back, looking at the explosion in front of me. I hear a sickening crack, I look over to see Clove, her elbows bent in ways then shouldn't be. I try to get up, but I've injured my back. The fall must have damaged by back in some way. I turn over slowly, wincing in pain, and crawling over to Clove. She's just laying there, for a moment I think that she's dead, but I see the faint rise and fall of her shoulders. I crawl quickly over and check her pulse, it's strong, she's okay.
"Clove?" I ask tentatively. She moans in response. I quickly turn her over so I can survey her face. She has cuts and bruises. I trail my eyes down to her elbows, which are bloody and most likely broken. My eyes then go to her stomach, fear takes over me, is the baby dead? I shakily lower by hand on her abdomen, I wait a little then I feel something. Our baby kicked!
"You blew up the force field Clove, we're okay," I whisper in her ear, taking her hand in mine.
"Baby?" she faintly breaths.
"The baby's fine Clove, he or she's a fighter," I whisper. A small smile comes to her face, but then her face contorts in pain.
"I'm going to go get some moss, okay?" I whisper, then I squeeze her hand and get up. The moss will cover up her elbow and hopefully stop the blood flow. I walk off, looking over the trees until I find one with moss on the branch. I jump up, but I still can't reach it. Frustrated, I start to climb the tree, slowly.
"Cato!" I hear Clove scream. I stumble out of the tree, almost falling and run over to where I left her. But she's not there.
"Cato!" she screams again, I look up where the noise is coming from. I see Clove in the grip of a hovercraft. It's slowly pulling her up, mocking me, showing me that I can't get her, even if I tried. I look up at the seal, the Capital.
"Clove!" I scream at her, hoping that she can hear me and take comfort in my voice, "Take me instead!" I scream up at the hovercraft. It pulls Clove up and then she disappears. Finally, a hovercraft takes me, hopefully to Clove. I jump into the claws, hoping that when I'm up there, Clove will greet me. When I finally disappear into the hovercraft. Doctors crowd all around me, searching for wounds. When they realize my back is messed up, a needle is pierced into my arm, and I'm out.
I wake up to the beeping of a heart monitor. I open up my eyes slowly, taking all the light in. I feel warm liquid entering my arm and my eyes open fully. I take in my surroundings. We appear to be in the hovercraft that the game makers used to transport us to that dreadful arena. I quickly yank out the IV and everything else attached to me, maybe there might have been poison in the fluid, who knows what sick things the Capital will plan to do to us, especially since destroyed the arena. Clove! I quickly circle around the room. It's been turned into a makeshift hospital. Beetee's on the ground, attached to all different machines keeping his heart going. He shouldn't be here, he should be dead, they're just making him suffer. I need to find other people here, I scan the room for a suitable weapon. I take a syringe, hiding it behind my back. I tentatively push the door, hoping that the other people haven't trapped us in here. Luckily, they left the door open. I quietly creep into the hall, crouching low to the ground when there are doors and windows. I need to find Clove. I quickly peek into each door I come across, but she's not there. I'm about to turn the corner when I hear familiar voices. I creep over quietly, straining to hear more. All I hear is,
"Devastated... can't rescue... President Snow... forcefield..." My eyes widen when I recognize the voices. Finnick, Haymitch, Brutus and Enobaria are all in that room, including an unrecognizable voice. I quickly look at the tiny syringe I hold in my hand, that'll do nothing to a group of 4 victors. I just sigh and get into a jumping stance. I gain momentum and push off the balls of my feet, flying into the room, grabbing Brutus by the shoulder and pinning him down. I hold the syringe up and bring it down, but I'm stopped by several hands.
"Cato, calm yourself," Enobaria says, looking at me.
"Where's Clove?" I demand, looking at each one of them. They all share glances and when I mention her name they frown.
"Cato..." a man says, trailing off. I vaguely recognize him.
"Who are you?" I ask, staring coldly at him.
"I'm Plutarch Heavensbee, previous head gamemaker," he holds his hand out, but I don't move.
"Where's Clove?" I ask again.
"Cato, I'm sorry," Finnick says, putting a hand on my shoulder. I just shake it off.
"Sorry for what?" I demand.
"Cato, Clove was taken by the Capital," Finnick says. They all tense, waiting for me to explode, but I stand there frozen, unable to do anything.
"What do you mean taken?" I ask slowly, staring at Plutarch.
"We tried to get her first, but it was too late, the Capital already had her," Plutarch says.
"Well you didn't try hard enough because now my fiance and my unborn child are in the hands of a murderer," I spit.
"Cato, I understand how you feel," Finnick starts, but I don't let him finish.
"No you don't Finnick, no you don't. You don't know what it feels like to be told that the love of your life is in the hands of President Snow himself, including your unborn child. You don't know how it feels to think that they may never come back because you couldn't save them," I yell at him. Finnick's face turn red.
"I do know what it's like Cato! Annie was taken too!" Finnick yells louder than me. He sits down in a chair and puts his head in his hands, taking a deep breath.
"Well then you do know what it feels like," I say, then I turn to Brutus, "We need to get her back."
"Cato, that'll be impossible," Brutus says sympathetically.
"No it's not! If she can get in she can get out," I say.
"We'll try our best, but we can't guarantee," Plutarch says.
"Yes you will try your best, and I will save her," I say, then I walk out.
Clove POV:
When I wake up I feel a person's presence in the room. I stiffen, hearing a heart monitor's beeps and feeling bandages wrapped around my elbows.
"Glad your awake," a voice snarls. I sit up, and stare at my only nightmare, President Snow.
