Cato POV:
Right after President Coin made the announcement, they pulled us away into the Command Room. In there they armed us with even more weapons than the time before. I was given this time 2 swords that were strapped to my back, 2 guns, a tranquilizer gun, a bullet proof vest, a walkie-talkie and basic medical supplies.
"Medical supplies?" Finnick questions. This time only Finnick, Brutus and Enobaria join me in the mission. Coin says that the less people, the better.
"Yes, for Clove and you. We don't know what shape Clove is in right now," a doctor that would be joining us explained.
"We have armed you with even more weapons this time because the Capital will most likely be more alert and ready for us to rescue Clove," Alma Coin explained.
"This will be quick. Our aim is to be in and out within no more than 20 minutes. A helicopter and the doctors will be waiting on the roof. Take any other prisoners that you can find," General Wood said. We all nod and we get into the helicopter. I made sure that Stephen was with Annie when I left because she took care of him after he was born.
"Now, I understand that it will be tough to see Clove, considering all of the torture that she has endured. So Cato, if this will affect you enough for you to not do what you're supposed to do, then stay here," Wood said as we neared the Capital. I shook my head. We all prepared to jump. General Wood would be waiting for us.
"Jump!" he commanded. We all jumped onto the roof of the building. As planned, Enobaria and Brutus stayed on the roof to guard it and to help protect Finnick and I when we were coming back. Finnick and I climbed down the many stairs as silently as we could. Luckily there were no peacekeepers in our way. We went right back to where we went before, but before we could open the door, two peacekeepers came running over, screaming at us to stop. Finnick quickly threw both of his tridents into their chests. Their white outfits quickly turned red as he yanked out the bloody tridents from their chests. I opened the door to see Johanna and Clove. Johanna looked the same, but I had to lean on the wall when I looked at Clove. She looked so malnourished. Her face was hollow and her arms and legs were covered in bruises, burns, cuts, and stings. Her hair was a mess and some parts of her body were coated in dried blood. Her shoulders were slumped and it looked as if Johanna was the only thing that kept her standing. I looked into her green eyes and I smiled slightly, at least they didn't change her eyes.
"Clove!" I exclaimed. I was so happy to see her that I ran towards her. But as I was running I watched as her green eyes turned black. I stopped in my tracks, frightened by her black eyes.
"Mutt!" I heard her seethe, and then she jumped on me. With her momentum she knocked me down and she pinned me down. She wrapped her thin hands around my neck and squeezed. I was so surprised by her sudden action that I just sat there. Finnick shot his tranquilizer and I watched in horror as her frail body collapsed on top of me. Finnick pulled Clove off of me and Johanna helped me up.
"Did you see her eyes?" was all I could say. Finnick nodded. I took Clove's small body and this time Johanna followed us as we ran through the halls. Soon peacekeepers were surrounding us and sirens were blaring from all directions. Finnick and I each handed Johanna one of our guns and we armed ourselves.
"Run!" Finnick shouted as he continually stabbed peacekeepers. Johanna was shooting them down quickly. I ran, gun in hand towards the exit with Finnick and Johanna behind me. We battled off peacekeepers until we got to the roof, where the helicopter and Enobaria and Brutus were waiting. I handed Clove to the doctors first, then I joined the battle. I used my sword and I pretended that I was back at the training center in District 2. Stabbing every target that got in my way.
"Retreat to the helicopter!" Wood shouted over the chaos. We all nodded and took off. The helicopter was about 5 feet away from the roof and 5 feet high and a ladder was tossed out. We had to jump up and climb the ladder up. The peacekeepers were only a couple feet behind us. One by one, everyone jumped in until it was only me and Johanna still on the roof. I looked back. The peacekeepers were about to kill us.
"You jump first!" she yelled. I nodded and jumped I climbed about half of it until I felt the ladder move and I looked down and saw Johanna climbing too. Suddenly everything was in slow motion. I saw one peacekeeper shot from the gun that Johanna had left on the roof. I watched as the bullet sped over to me. It was just about to hit me when I saw a flash of black hair and a scream. Then everything was normal again and I saw Johanna plummeting down with blood all over her chest. I looked into her eyes until she hit the ground. I climbed up the ladder and sat down. I had to think. Johanna just sacrificed her own life by taking that bullet. If she hadn't I would have been dead. I silently thanked her.
So Clove's rescued but hijacked and Johanna is dead. What will Cato do now?
