Buffy saw Angel shortly after midnight. Despite their circumstances Angel seemed happier than Buffy had ever seen him. Buffy knew what Spike had done, and she was grateful. But, for better or worse, Angel was the one Buffy had fallen in love with. Buffy found Angel on this night, and she kissed him. Spike saw them kissing, he walked away in anger. How could Buffy choose Angel, after all that Spike had done? Then Spike remembered the approaching battle. Despite this Spike still wanted to protect Buffy. Not merely for Buffy's sake, but for everyone's sake. Spike found himself wanting to save innocent people, fight for this world. So this was what it was like to have a soul.
