Chapter Twenty Six

The sun rose bright and early over Pokémon Isle the next day. All the iDexes started vibrating, indicating a new message. Most trainers slept through the buzzing though. Some of the early risers and light sleepers woke up and saw that the device had been updating with the various blocks. The message said which block you were in and who the other three members are.

Later in the morning, Pikachu shocked Ash awake. After recovering from the attack, Ash got dressed. Before he could leave the room and get breakfast, Brock handed him the iDex.

"Ash, you're block and opponents have been revealed."

"Cool! Who am I facing?"

"Let's see." Brock fiddled with the device. "It says you're in block twenty one and the other three competitors are Kevin Quinn, Daphne Waters, and ..." Brock trailed off.

"And who?"

"Max Maple."

"Well, I was bound to battle some friends at this tournament eventually."

"I guess. Well, let's head to breakfast. The group said to meet at Koffing Cafe. So let's go."

With that, the duo and Pikachu headed out of the electric hotel. The group did indeed meet up at the Cafe, and they all took a seat at the table. As everyone was eating Max suddenly stood up.

"Look Ash, I know we're friends, but promise me you'll give it you're all when you battle me!"

The trainer from Pallet Town almost choked on the sausage he was eating before he responded.

"Of course! Promise me you'll give me you're all too! No regrets!"

"Yeah!"

The two trainers shook hands as a waiter came around to shush them. They had been screaming rather loudly in the cafe.

As the group left the restaurant, some of the iDexes started buzzing. Ash and Max would have battles the next day. Ash would be facing Kevin and Max would be facing Daphne. No one knew these two trainers, so Ash and Max decided to pick a versatile team of six pokémon. Paul had a battle within the hour, so he walked off with Dawn in tow. The others decided to follow the couple to watch the battle.

Nearing League Tower, some members of the group looked up at awe. The tower was huge, and the upper levels could not be seen due to clouds. Paul used the participant elevator while the others used the spectator entrance. As Ash and co. took their seats Paul entered the field and faced off against his opponent.

Paul's Weavile defeated a Dragonite before falling to an Aegislash. The Aegislash was then beat by Torterra. Since all block battles were two on two, Paul ended up winning his match. The other battle in his block also ended in a similar way, so Paul was tied for first place in his block.

The rest of the day saw Ash and Max train for their battles the next day.

"Well Lucario, it seems as though the first day is successful." Gowly remarked to his pokémon as the duo sat in Gowly's office watching the various battles on the TV.

Indeed Master.

"According to the schedule, Ash should be battling tomorrow. We'll be sure to watch that. Right?"

Yep

The duo then continued to watch the remaining battles.

For the second day in a row, the sun rose brightly over Pokémon Isle. Ash awoke excited because he knew that he would be battling today. The first half of the day passed by in a blur. Before he knew it, Ash was in the elevator of League Tower riding up to the field. He stepped onto the field as some of his friends took their seats in the stands. The others went to see Max's battle which was being held at the same time on a different floor.

On the other side of the field, Kevin Quinn already stood. He looked to be 5'11, with light blue eyes and sandy brown hair. The man was very muscular from training alongside his pokémon, and he had freckles all over his face. He wore khaki shorts and an athletic shirt. The two trainers shook hands as a referee appeared.

"This will be a two on two battle between Ash Ketchum and Kevin Quinn. There will be no substitutions and the battle will end when one side is out of usable pokémon. Begin!"

"Go Calypso!" Kevin called out a majestic Milotic to his side of the field.

"I choose you, Gallade!" The blade pokémon took to the field.

Interesting. Gowly thought as he watched Ash and Kevin send out their first two pokémon. "What do you think Lucario?"

Well. Both pokémon have high special defenses, so it looks as though Gallade has the advantage. His attacks are more likely to be physical, while Milotic's attacks will probably be special.

"That's what I was thinking, but Kevin seems to be a capable trainer. We'll see soon."

The duo turned their attention back to the TV.

"Leaf blade!" Ash called out.

"Wait for it to get close and use dragon tail!"

As Gallade was about to hit Calypso, Calypso's tail glowed blue, she slammed the tail into Gallade. Gallade was recalled into his pokéball, and Ash's Charizard appeared on the field.

"What just happened?" Ash asked in confusion.

"Dragon tail switches out my opponent's pokémon for another one." Kevin replied.

"Ok then. Charizard, use flamethrower!"

"Scald!"

The two hot attacks collided and steam was released. Few could see what was happening. When the smoke cleared Charizard stood next to Calypso!

"Now use shadow claw and then fly away!"

Kevin didn't have time to call out a counter attack and Calypso was too slow to move. Charizard's dark claws slashed at her face. It appeared to be a critical hit. The attack lifted Calypso off of the ground, giving Charizard time to fly away.

"No more Mr. Nice Guy. Scald, full power!"

"Dodge with aerial ace!"

As more water was released, Charizard dodged the attack and slammed into the tender pokémon, knocking her out.

"Milotic is unable to battle! Charizard is the winner!"

"Let's see." Kevin said as he recalled his fallen pokémon. I need a pokémon that can beat both Charizard and Milotic. I know! Go Nero!"

On Kevin's side of the field, another Charizard appeared!

"Flamethrower!" Both trainers called out.

The fire attacks met in the middle of the field. There was a fierce tug of war as both pokémon tried to overpower each other. Neither side gave an inch.

Getting impatient, Ash called out, "Use shadow claw!"

A small smile appeared on Kevin's face. "Use rock slide!"

As Charizard flew towards Nero, Nero summoned a ton of massive rocks that were sent hurtling at Charizard. The doubly super effective attack knocked out Ash's Charizard.

"Ash's Charizard is unable to battle! Kevin's Charizard is the winner!"

"Return Charizard. You did great!" After Ash pocketed that pokéball, he took out Gallade's. "Let's do this one more time! Go Gallade!"

The blade pokémon appeared on the field once again.

"Flamethrower!" Kevin called out.

"Dodge it!"

Gallade jumped out of the way of the flames.

"Flamethrower!"

"Keep dodging!"

Nero kept launching flamethrowers, but Gallade jumped out of the way every single time. Kevin was beginning to grow frustrated, so he finally changed attacks.

"Use wing attack!"

Nero roared and dived at Gallade as his wings glowed. Now a small smile appeared on Ash's face.

"Thunder punch!"

Just as Nero was about to slam into Gallade, Gallade brought up a fist coated in electricity. The punch connected with Nero, before the flame pokémon could hit Gallade. The attack sent Nero back and there was still electricity running through the flame pokémon.

Perfect. Ash thought to himself. He's paralyzed. "Keep using thunder punch!"

The blade pokémon continued to attack the flame pokémon with thunder punches. Due to his paralysis, Nero was unable to move out of the way. The super effective attacks dealt a lot of damage, and eventually the flame pokémon fell.

"Charizard is unable to battle! Gallade is the winner! That means that Ash Ketchum has won the battle and is hereby awarded three points. Due to his losing, Kevin Quinn is awarded zero points!"

After Ash and Kevin recalled their pokémon, the two trainers met in the center of the field and shook hands. When Ash and his spectators got to the lobby of the tower, they saw Max and the others already waiting. His battle had ended in a draw, giving him one point. Ash was currently winning his block.

The group of friends then went to the pokémon center to heal Ash's and Max's pokémon. They then went to dinner and retired for the night.

"That battle went well." Gowly told Lucario.

Agreed. It looks as though the boy will probably be moving on to the next round.

"Hopefully. He only won by luck. Look at the critical hit and the paralysis."

Maybe his aura is influenced the battle.

"MY aura isn't that powerful. You think his is?"

If he's the chosen one, then it is possible.

"Hmm. We'll have to keep an eye on him."

Lucario nodded in response.
