Hello lovelies :D it's chapter time again, I had been toying with the idea of just going straight up to Jane's death but I decided not to, anyway hope you enjoy
After the King had recovered fully from his illness he held a small banquet. Jane told him that she had a gift for him that would make him very happy. She had brought the Lady Mary back to court and Henry was very happy to see his eldest daughter once again. He said that she would be given lodgings at Hampton Court and that she would no longer live in fear of when others would have wanted to see her put to death. Mary was very grateful to both His Majesty and the new Queen for their generosity.
The day after this banquet the King held a consort with some of the rebel leaders who had been brought down form Yorkshire to speak with His Majesty. The King said that he would pardon the rebels if they would disband their troupes and stop the rebellion. The men agreed but they would require more than just a general pardon for them to disband completely. One of the men trusted the King's faith and mercy completely but the other was more sceptical – because Cromwell was so close to the King he thought their word was not to be trusted.
Even thought there was still a great deal of suspicion around the word of Mr Cromwell the rebels disbanded but kept themselves prepared in case they needed to rise up again at any given moment's notice. None of them trusted the word of Cromwell, although many said that if the King trusted his word then they should trust the King. His Majesty had always been just and fair to them in the past and they had no reason not to trust him. The leader of the rebels, a Mr Robert Aske was invited by His Majesty to spend Christmas at court so that he could have an audience with Henry and discuss the terms of the rebellion. This worried many rebels but Aske was happy to comply so they did not question him.
During this Christmas at Court Mary and Jane presented to His Majesty his daughter Elizabeth. The young lady looked terrified to be standing in the presence of her father (which was not surprising considering what he had done to her mother) but Henry welcomed her back into his arms as if nothing had happened with the Lady Anne Boleyn. He presented to the Court his family: Jane, Mary and Elizabeth. Isabella looked on and smiled – she was glad that Henry had taken back both of his daughters into his favour and was choosing to look past the discrepancies of one of their mothers. They had the chance to reconnect and be a proper family now.
The leader of the rebels, Mr Aske, also had an audience with His Majesty that Christmas. He and the King talked greatly of the promises that the Duke of Suffolk had made on Henry's behalf, Henry stating that he would keep each and every one of them. He also told Mr Aske that he would grant him the greatest courtesy to visit him in York after the Christmas holidays. This honour was stretched even further when Henry said that during this visit he would hold Jane's coronation in the Castle at York, a promise that Mr Aske was incredibly grateful for.
Shortly after this, towards the New Year, the Queen's brother Sir Edward Seymour gave her some very distressing news. Edward told her while at court that their father had died. Jane asked him when it had happened and he replied that it had happened a week ago and that he had arranged the funeral. Jane was very upset that he had not told her any of this, she was also very angry with him that he had not included her at all in the matter. He told her to keep smiling and that she was the Queen of England, she should not show her emotions while she was in the public eye.
"I cannot believe that he did not tell me of my own father's death!" Jane told Isabella once the two were alone together. Isabella put her arm around Her Majesty's shoulders.
"Perhaps he thought he was doing what was right in not putting any stress on you, especially with everything going on in the North." she replied, kindly.
"But it was my father!" Jane cried. "I was sad to hear that he was ill, and I would have wanted to know the outcome of his illness. I would have gone to see him before he died, to say goodbye, and I would have wanted to be at his funeral. I feel so out of touch with my own family apart from Edward."
"And Edward if not necessarily the most affectionate of brothers, if I may say so." Isabella stated. Jane sighed.
"No, you are right, he is not." she replied. "He thinks he knows what is best for me but he doesn't, he always has. He thinks that he knows what I desire and what will give me the greatest life but he should not have that control over me now. I am His Majesty's and I will submit to him, no one else."
"Then be of good cheer, for you are His Majesty's." Isabella told her, giving her shoulder's a comforting squeeze.
"Yes." Jane replied. "I shall be of good cheer for I have great reason to be happy." She gave Isabella a knowing look. Isabella turned to look at the Queen, a smile breaking out on her face.
"Your Majesty are you...?" she asked, trailing off her question before she could finish it. Jane's own smile widened and she nodded slightly.
"I believe that I am." she replied. Isabella beamed at her, maybe now Henry would finally be granted the son that he had so desired for so many years.
"Then we have a great cause for celebration."
"Sweetheart," Henry began the next morning while he and Jane were eating their breakfast. "I see you're eating quail's eggs again. Did you not have those yesterday?" he asked.
"I did, yes." Jane replied, she shot a conspiratorial smile at Isabella who was standing nearby. "I am finding that I desire to eat quail's eggs above everything else these days. I have developed rather a fondness for them." she told him. She did not want to tell him her good news just yet; she wanted him to guess first, it was more fun that way.
"A special fondness?" Henry asked. Jane just smiled and watched as the penny dropped in Henry's head. "I think you may be with child." he stated. Jane just continued to smile back at him. She had been so looking forward to giving him this news considering all the problems he had been having with the North over the past few months and now she had found the perfect opportunity.
"I am." she replied, simply. Henry beamed, this was indeed the best news that he had heard in a very long time. His darling wife was carrying his child and she may yet be carrying the son he had longed for for so long. He stood up and went over to her. He kissed her lips softly, cradling her head in his hands.
"My beautiful wife." he stated. "You are the most perfect wife that I could ever have asked for. I thank you for bringing me this wonderful news." He kissed her once again and Isabella smiled. She was glad that Henry was happy and that he could find happiness in Jane and what she was about to give him.
