Chapter ten

Max POV

I flew through the suddenly less warm air with Nudge on my back silently. Fang has officially lost my trust. You don't tell me you love me and then kiss the girl I hate with a burning passion afterwards. You just don't! That's like… etiquette.

"Max, we've got company," Nudge said in my ear. I turned my head and saw many demons. Hot on my trail. Perfect: I need to blow off some steam.

"Nudge, I'm going to throw you as hard as I possibly can," I told her. I felt her tense up.

"What?! What if you don't catch me?!" she shrieked.

"If I don't finish them in time to catch you, you're going to want to be dead already." Leaving her with the implications of that, I covered her with an invisibility cloak and threw her hard.

I spun around with my fangs bared. The demons grinned as they surrounded me.

"Ready for Round 2, Your Highness?" one taunted. As an answer, I kicked him. The others quickly rushed at me at the same time, but they flew back due to my trustee force field.

I kicked into my inner dragon. It's the single thing that makes me more powerful than any other being in the universe. A roar forced itself out of my mouth, kick starting the summoning of my dragon. Fire burned off most of my outfit. Quite literally. All that was left was a sleeveless shirt so small it was practically a strapless bra, and mini shorts almost as small as Lissa's skirts.

I roared again, and my dragon mark appeared winding around my body. My wings turned to fire. And the beast appeared.

"I don't believe you've properly met me," I grinned as the dragon mark turned into an actual dragon wrapped around my body. The demons visibly gulped. "My name is Maximum Ride. And I am the most powerful Guardian Vampire there has ever been!"

I gave a powerful flap of my wings, and fire shot out of them. At the same time, my dragon blew fire in the direction I wasn't facing. Demons fell out of the sky while burning; the remaining five disappeared in order to avoid being killed.

~Nudge POV~

'No, no, no, no, no! I'm falling! Stay up, stay up, stay up!' I shrieked in my mind as I stopped flying and starting falling.

"MMMMMMAAAAAAAAXXXXXXXXXXX!"

"Gotcha!" A streak of blond hair flashed before my eyes as I stopped falling.

"S… Sarah? Where did you come from?"

"I saw Max throw you. Sorry I didn't get here sooner: I can't fly that fast yet." She flapped her wings and gained altitude.

"Why are you helping me? I thought you hated me." She sighed as she flew in the direction of the cabin we're staying in.

"The mortals come first."

"What?" I asked, looking at her in confusion.

"Guardian Vampire law number one: the mortals come first. My hatred is more towards Max's perfect life than towards you. She's always gotten everything she could possibly want. But that doesn't matter. The mortal's life comes before our personal feelings."

"That's the first thing you learn?" She nodded.

"Once you have been alive for two decades, you begin taking classes on mortal life and GV laws/ history. Max didn't tell you this when you found out about us?"

"I'm still getting used to the idea of having a vampire protect me from demons that want me dead for whatever reason."

She landed in front of the cabin at the same time that Max and a… dragon (?!) landed.

"Now how on earth did you catch her before I did?"

"I saw your aura, Max." My guardian tensed slightly. "I never knew a Royal could feel that way. I guess your brush with death humanized you," Sarah said softly.

"It did. We need to get inside now. Of 100, five demons got away alive. I don't need them finding us here without a new barrier up." Sarah and I nodded; I walked inside alone.

~Sarah POV~

'Ok, Sarah. You can do this. Max deserves to know. She might even lock the bastard up if she knew,' I thought as I followed Max back into the house.

"If I know about what?" she asked, locking the door.

"I need to tell you a story. Alone." She glanced into the living room where a few Knights were chatting with Nudge, looking unsure. "Please?"

"Alright, we can talk in my room." I followed her to one of the four rooms in the cabin. She and Nudge share the bigger and better room, but the girl is royalty. I guess that is expected. I watched in awe as her dragon wrapped around her body and turned into a tattoo.

"Ok, what I am about to tell you pretty much explains my hatred towards Royals." She motioned for me to have a seat; we sat facing each other on the bed.

"I'm intrigued. Narrate on."

"Well, I am the rape child of a Vampire lord." She raised an eyebrow but didn't interrupt. "My mom was a poor mortal that knew how to pretty up a room in only five minutes. The lord often had her decorate and redecorate guest rooms and ballrooms in his estates. She never complained because she needed the money. Not even when he began making passes at her.

"She always resisted him," I continued. "Though she didn't know he was one of us, she did know he was a lord. And she knew she had no future with a lord. Or any royal for that matter. He became angered because women, especially mortal women, never deny him what he wants.

"He broke into her house one night, which was easy because she didn't have a GV. He raped her, hard. Nine months later, she had me.

"She knew he would deny ever having anything to do with her. So she kept me a secret."

"But then your powers started showing."

"When I was six, yes. The lord found out and kidnapped me. I was raised by a Vampire Nun from then on. I learned how to use my powers and be a true vampire from her. But despite my gentle lifestyle from then on, my hatred towards Royals burned deep inside me. They lived happily, easily, while the rest of us lived in poverty."

"You were at the 11th centuries' race," she stated.

"They boasted about you. You were the Royal, not just a Royal. They were proud of what you are. All I saw was your position as the queen of the most powerful race in the universe, your aura that hid you dragon from those who need it, all the guys staring at you with desire. Well, all but one. I saw your reputation. And I labeled you as perfect. A perfect Royal. And I've hated you since."

"Then why did you want to come to Arizona with me and Fang?" I shrugged.

"Easiest assignment is one where I am under your wing. I may have forgotten to steer clear of your incredible strength and easily summoned temper, though."

"So what now, Aura Seeing Nurse? Is my life still perfect?" I looked her in the eye.

"No. Because perfect people don't fall in love with someone and then get their hearts crushed by that same person."

Yay! Sarah's true personality (and power) is revealed! Reviews are greatly appreciated.
