I AM BACK! Review? It keeps me wiriting!
Also, I unfortunately own nothing A:TLA related. Not even a T-Shirt :(
We were held captive by Katara's angry rampage for only a few hours. After regaining my strength, I was able to bend the snow and ice blocking our path away. Behind me Hakoda struggled to keep with us, coughing and hacking with every step we took. Half way to the campsite we stopped for a short rest. As Hakoda wheezed, gasping for air, I locked eyes with Sangok.
His blue eyes were not hard with anger, but mournful. Sadness consumed his whole body, which explained why he refused to make an escape from us. The gaze shifted to Katara, who sat beside her father, holding him as he continued his coughing spree.
Slowly I began to realize that the love between them was real. Sangok had not come to the South Pole to corrupt the balance of peace, but to be with Katara. At least, that was what his initial intent was. He may have lost his way, through the corruption of his father and the man Hahn claimed to be working for, but that didn't mean he didn't love Katara any less.
But that didn't mean I was done fighting for her affections, either.
We reunited with the camp and quickly made our way to the village. The storm had passed, so our journey seemed much easier. We were greeted by the village healers who quickly whisked Hakoda and the others away, leaving me with Katara and the rest of the party.
After a small speech, explaining why we had left, the party dispersed, returning to their loved ones as they should have.
Yet Katara stood by me, her gaze never leaving my face. My heart pounded in my chest as she stepped closer to me. She parted her lips, her tongue slipping out to moisten them. I leaned forward slightly but she shrank back, eye eyes inadvertently shifting to the prisoner glaring at us from only a few feet away.
"Aang, what are we going to do with him?" she asked, fingering her coat nervously.
I sighed. "Send him home, I guess." I turned to look at him obediently standing in his place. Yet he still looked suspicious. His gaze would shift back and forth between two Northern benders, both of which were placed at either side of the village hospital. Beside them were two watch towers. From the little vibrations I could feel with my feet, they were possibly the only structures left that were made completely of ice and snow. With a slight nod from Sangok the two performed what seemed to be a dance. But, that was not the intention.
Simultaneously, the towers began to fall. The two of us shouted, but what happened next was indescribable. I was able to stop one tower, but Katara did more than that. Not only did she stop one tower, but from a good distance, she was able to incapacitate the two men and drag her ex-fiance to her side.
"Sangok," she said through gritted teeth. "What the hell are you doing? Trying to kill my father?"
He said nothing, staring at his feet.
"Well you spineless bastard?" she spat, swinging her hand across his face but he caught her hand just before it collided with his cheek.
"Katara, If I could only tell you what I am going through. If you would only believe that it is only to keep you safe."
She shook her head. "No!" she snapped. "If you loved me, you would be honest with me. But no, you try to destroy the world and my father? What if I had been in there?" She forced him to look at her but then shook her head. "Aang, send them home."
Sangok shook his head. "Katara, you can't do that!"
"And why the hell not?" she snapped, her eyes blazing wildly.
"Because, Katara, they'll kill Sokka if I return without you to betroth."
My. Life. Sucks.
She froze, unsure of how to respond. At that moment, I could tell that her only thought was how much she wanted to kill the man standing before her, but her brother's life was at stake, she had be careful.
"Sangok, I'm not going anywhere with you. I have to stay here to help my father, I have to make sure that he regains the health that you so carelessly lost."
"Katara I didn't-"
"I don't want to hear it, Sangok. I can't believe I ever agreed to marrying you! You just used me! All you want is this stupid world domination crap that we just barely got rid of! Tell me something, did you come to me with that intention, or did that just become a part of your plan?"
He shook his head, tears forming in his eyes. "Katara, none of that was fake. I loved you, I still love you. I always will. I'm sorry that I screwed up, but you don't know the consequences of failure!"
"Then tell me!"
"I CAN'T!" he shouted. "At least not without putting you in danger!"
"Fine! Just write a letter to your father explaining that I'll be coming later. You just need to leave before I have to make you leave."
The words I witnessed between Sangok and Katara were their last. Katara spent every waking moment with her father while I prepared the ship for Sangok and his followers to leave on. Sangok seemed miserable without Katara to cheer him up, and that sickened me. She was just a woman, and no man needed a woman's constant attention. I counted down the days until I could finally wave goodbye to Sangok and all his troubles and progress in my relationship with Katara, but when that day finally came, things were a lot more depressing than I had envisioned.
Hakoda's fever had fallen enough for him to say his goodbyes to Sangok and the other Northerners, his words were short but powerful, stating the disappointment the tribesmen had brought to the South. He sent the on the boat, with Sangok standing by himself, looking at the chief and his family around him.
"Hakoda..." he said softly, looking intently at the man that was intended to be his second father.
Katara stood. "Sangok, it's best you go."
He moved to speak but a stern look silenced him. I gently nudged him with my staff and he nodded, slowly turning and walking onto the boat. The benders behind him formed a line, their palms moving slowly in unison, a dance that I recognized as a goodbye ritual. But as their hands moved, the ocean moved with it. Behind them, the waves grew larger and larger until they thrust their hands above their heads, sending a tsunami heading for the village.
I sprang into action, running against the frantic villagers. I stood at the ice's edge, glancing back and forth looking for something to stop the wall with. Nothing. I gulped. I had no other option. My hands began to slowly circle each other, a small flame puckered in between them and slowly began to grow. The wave grew nearer and nearer as the ball of fire grew. The screams surrounding me blended into nothingness as I focused. the sea spray hit my face, a cruel reminder of the death that would surround us if I was not fast enough. The wave was only a few yards away and I threw my arms out, sending the fire out, creating a wall that turned the tsunami into a mist that coated our faces with it's icy sting.
I whirled around, looking at the mass of villagers, making sure they were accounted for, but the one I cared about most was not amongst them.
"Aang!" a distant voice cried out.
I spun back around and let out a frustrated yell. "Katara!" I cried as I watched the boats take off with such speed, with a Southern Watertribe Princess amongst them. "Appa!" I shouted, turning an sprinting toward the barn. He broke down the doors before I even had the chance to open them. I flew up, landing on his head, wondering how he had been saddled and ready, but I didn't have time to ask. I snapped the reins and cried "Yip yip!"
Appa let out a groan and lifted himself into the air, following my lead as I guided him toward the boats. His eyes caught the whispy dark hair that blew in the wind and he dove downward, letting out a loud groan as he did.
By now, the sea was pushing against the boats, rocking them back and forth. The men on the boats ran around the deck, bending the water back into the sea. Katara was frantic, her head moving every which way as Sangok's arm was wrapped protectively around her waist. He took his stance and began to bend the water away from the boat, struggling to stop ever wave that came at them.
But I had seen this before.
I steered Appa to the side of the ship, bending the waves around us until the cloud of black hair could be seen above us. "Sangok!" she cried as she tumbled over, landing in the saddle.
"Katara!" he cried as he looked over at us.
I smirked and snapped Appa's reigns. "Better luck next time, Sangok!"
"Aang, where are we going?"
A new day had begun since I had saved Katara from her watery grave, in that time span I had informed her family of our new destination and set out for it almost immediately, deciding that she would be safer if I were able to protect her. I had one kingdom in mind to aid in the quieting of the North, a kingdom whose element opposed that of waters. Yet, I was slightly nervous about bringing Katara there. Azula and I...we had some history and Zuko...well he had an eye for any female in his age range.
"The Fire Nation, you'll be safe there," I said calmly, readying myself for her protests.
"Aang, we need to go to the North! We have to save my brother!" she argued, crawling forward so that she was right next to me.
"Sokka will be fine, he's the best warrior in your tribe," I argued. I did not want to go spend more time with Captain Traitor.
"No!" Katara screamed. "Aang, we HAVE to go to the North, if we don't everything will turn into a disaster!"
I snapped. "What, Katara? What is in the North that is so important?" Sangok. That was the only thing she cared about. Always having to be around her precious ex-fiance. When would she see that I was a better match for her?
"The father of my unborn child, that's who!" She hollered. "Yes, that's right! I'm pregnant with Sangok's child and if we don't go to the North, then the child will be fatherless!"
I froze, the reigns went slack, sending Appa into a nose dive for the ice below us, landing with a soft thud. Slowly I began to process her words. She was pregnant. With the child of the current enemy to the world. My enemy. Pregnant. The word echoed into my head, slowly raising my temper until I finally couldn't stand the idea of her within two feet of me.
"Get off the bison."
"Aang!"
"Katara, get off the bison," I said more firmly, my grip on the reigns tightening.
"No, I'm-"
With one wave of my hand, I knocked her out of her seat, setting her down on the icy floor. "If you want to go to the North so badly, then bend your way there. Appa, yip yip!"
Appa let out a great, and also fake, yawn. He flapped his tail and lifted himself into the air, hovered for a few moments, and then slumped back down, landing with a loud smack. Why did he have to chose now to be so stubborn?
"Yip yip!" I said more firmly, tugging at the reigns.
Appa groaned and laid flat on his belly while my anger level rose to a new high. I hated his mood swings.
"Appa!" I snapped the reigns again. I rolled my eyes just as he did.
"Waaaaaaaaaan!" he protested as I tugged on his reigns. Apparently he had spent a few too many hours with the penguins and picked up their wails.
I groaned. And glanced back over to Katara. Her tanned face was cast downward, her hands rubbing her stomach. I sighed. Appa was right. I couldn't leave Katara here, I'd feel guilty about it later. Especially since it wouldn't only hurt the bastard child, but also her. "Katara, get back on the bison."
"But you said-"
"Get back on the bison," I said more firmly, fire spouting from my mouth as I said it again.
She glowered at me and stubbornly stood her ground. I sighed, realizing how difficult she intended to be. Deciding against lengthening this debacle, I whipped my hand out again, bending the air around her and lifting her into the air, gently setting her on the saddle. After as single "yip!" Appa lifted himself into the air. Stubborn bison.
The entire ride Katara bickered at me for almost leaving me in the icy wasteland. But all I could think about what how much I hoped my bending her onto the saddle hurt the kid.
Sorry I abandoned you! Bahh. I didn't like the end to this and I couldn't make it just right, but I hope you enjoy!
