Her eyes caught a picture of the Stabler kids across her living room on her bookshelf and suddenly the weight of what had just happened hit her head on. She collapsed into a heap sobbing and alone.
"...I want you to dump the cell phone records for the number that Lizzie used to call Judge Donnelly. I want a full GPS analysis of her that phone's last known location, and I want all uniforms out sweeping the streets for any sign of the twins. Now, people! Let's move!" Cragen dismissed the group of detectives and uniformed officers that had gathered in the bullpen just as Fin arrived back from Kathy's house with Maureen and Kathleen following quickly behind him.
"Captain! No sign of Lizzie and Dickie. The girls said that Kathy normally picks the twins up from school around 3 p.m. but neither was home last night to confirm that they made it home from school. There's no sign of Kathy, either."
"So the last time either of you saw Lizzie or Dickie was before school yesterday. Is that correct?" Don looked both girls in the eyes and tried to have a calm, comforting tone of voice. This was Olivia's specialty, not his though and both girls immediately burst into tears.
"Yeah. That's right. God, it's all my fault." Kathleen sobbed into Maureen's arms.
"No, Katie, it's not. You had no way of knowing that something would happen. It's not your fault." Maureen tried her best to soothe her sister but looked at Cragen with distressed and worried eyes.
Just then, the elevator doors opened and Munch appeared with a frantic Elliot.
"DAD!" Both girls called in unison. Elliot ran past Munch, Fin, and Cragen, and swooped Kathleen and Maureen up in his arms simultaneously. The three stood in the middle of the bullpen holding each other for several minutes before Maureen peeked her head out of her dad's arms and cautiously asked "Where's Liv?"
"She's at home, resting. She's very worried. Why don't you let Uncle Fin drive you there so you can be with her? Does that sound okay?
"Yeah. That sounds okay." Kathleen piped up.
"Dad?"
"Yeah, Mo?"
"They're okay, right? Lizzie and Dickie?"
"They're going to be just fine. I just need to find them." Elliot said a silent prayer that he was right as Fin escorted the girls back to the elevators. Kathleen glanced over her shoulder as they turned the corner and tried to give her dad an encouraging smile. He smiled back, knowing that he needed to be strong for her though all he wanted to do was crumble.
Judge Donnelly was waiting in Captain Cragen's office for Elliot and had witnessed the scene with Maureen and Kathleen. She prayed for the first time in years in those moments, watching Elliot with his family, that they would solve this in time and that Elliot would be smart enough to move past any anger or resentment that he may hold for her, after she explains to him exactly what is going on, and let her help him find his twins. Don guided Elliot into his office and Liz stood as the two men entered. She was nervous but kept her stony composure as Don and Elliot sat down.
"Elliot. I am so sorry about this. I can't imagine what you're going through right now." Liz offered sincerely.
"Thank you, Liz." Elliot tried to smile but he just didn't have it in him. "I just want to find them. I assume the two of you know a little more about this than I do since you've brought me in here so could one of you fill me in?" He was so drained that he didn't have the energy to be angry. Liz was grateful for this.
"Elliot, what I'm going to tell you may be difficult for you to believe but I am going to ask that you trust me, for the sake of your family."
Elliot swallowed nervously and gave her his attention.
Maureen and Kathleen knocked quietly on Olivia's door while Fin stood behind them like a member of the secret service. Olivia, who had been sitting on the couch with her laptop and cell phone, trying her best to do any kind of research that would help Elliot, heard their knock immediately and ran to the door. She opened it quickly as soon as she saw who was on the other side and pulled the girls into her arms. She didn't even notice the pain radiating through her stomach as they gripped her tightly and cried on her shoulders.
Olivia sighed deeply and pulled away from them so she could see their faces. She silently wiped away their tears and ushered them into the living room with Fin closing the door gently and locking it behind him. Olivia turned to Fin next and hugged him tightly. "Thank you for bringing them, Fin."
"Anytime, baby girl. How are you feeling?" Fin removed his sunglasses and immediately looked much less intimidating. He took off his jacket and set it on one of Olivia's bar stools and then moved to sit in the armchair next to the couch.
"I'm fine. I feel much better." Olivia answered as if she was trying to convince herself .
"That's good. You look a hell of a lot better than the last time I saw you." Fin tried to smile but it did not reach his eyes. Olivia gave him a sad smile back.
"Can I get you anything to drink, Fin?" Olivia asked, already filling glasses of water for the girls.
"No thanks. I have to get back soon. I just wanted to fill you in on what we know so far before I go."
Olivia brought the glasses to the coffee table and set them down in front of Maureen and Kathleen. She propped the cushions up next to the girls and sat down stiffly on the couch next to them, turning to Fin and giving him her full attention.
"Looks like Lizzie and Dickie have both been missing since yesterday. Neither turned up at school and Kathy is nowhere to be found. We are tracing the cell phone call and trying to narrow down a last known location. We've also got unis out combing the streets. Besides that, we've got nothing."
Olivia nodded, knowing the first 48 hours were the most crucial and sighed in anxiety and frustration. She had never felt so helpless before.
