Chapter 10:
Finn his head against the chair as he laid his hand on his father's hospital bed. "Honey you should really go home." Carole told her son as she handed him a cup of coffee.
"Nah, I'm good." Finn smiled softly.
"You are exhausted Finn. I really think you should..."
"Do what? Stay at home? Look at my children in the eye and feel worse about my dad dying?" Carole took a step back at the coldness in her son's voice. She had began to shed tears.
"Mom...I..."
"What are you bickering about?" Came Chris's soft and tired voice.
"Nothing honey, we are just..."
"Waiting by my bedside?" Chris gave his wife a sweet smile. Rachel arrived to the room in that moment, she had barely gone home a couple hours to get some fresh clothes for Finn. "Ah good my girl, would you please tell this two that I know I'm dying and I don't need them arguing about when the time is right to let me go?" Rachel eyed Finn for a moment as he pulled his head back.
"Really Finn?" Rachel said sweetly as she walked closer to her father in law. Funny for Rachel to finally have a real relationship with Chris even though it had been fairly new and too short. "I come bearing gifts," she said heading Carole a small tupper container."Are you guys alright?"
"Bless you!" Chris smiled as he smelled the delicious wave of banana bread. "The kids okay?" Chris asked as he bit on his piece for a moment, it wasn't meant to be allowed for anyone to bring food not from his strict diet and yet, Rachel didn't care as long as she saw a smile on the man's face.
"They're fine, wondering when they can come visit grandpa." Rachel smiled.
"Bring them by tomorrow, visiting hours are almost over, stupid I know, since I might not be here tomorrow," Rachel felt the tension rise.
"Dad, would you stop?"
"What?" His dad asked quickly. "You are allowed to snap at your mother and be upset and I'm not allowed to express my feelings? I'm the one whose sick." Finn felt like throwing up. "I'm sorry Carole, I love you sweetheart but you two are getting on my neves." Carole smiled. Her first genuine smile in so long, probably since New Years, before all of this happened. She's never been he one to argue, specially not with Finn, she's always had this wonderful relationship with her son, but this disease was really getting to them and she hated it.
"I'm sorry." Chris has sent both Finn and Carole out while he remained on the room with Rachel, much to her surprise really.
"I know you are Finn, it's okay." His mother said sweetly, they've been sitting on the small chapel for a while. This brought Finn memories about Cory's birth and how his mother had comforted him after his son had been born, he was so young and Cory so fragile, he didn't know if he'd be able to handle it, and yet here he was, ten years later.
"This is it huh?" Finn asked, Carole turned to look at her son and yet he wasn't looking at him, he was looking up, to the heavens asking for guidance.
"Are you comfortable?" Rachel asked Chris as she puffed up his pillow. The older man nodded.
"I never did thank you for that banana bread." Her father in law said with a smile. "Or any of it really."
"Whatever do you mean?" She asked quietly.
"I've never given you enough credit for helping Finn, for making him happy." Chris admitted bitterly. "You loved my son and I accused you of using him." Rachel felt tears forming in her eyes. "I'm really sorry kid."
"It's alright, we were all afraid." She said speaking of when she had first gone and confronted Finn about her pregnancy after Will and Emma's failed wedding. "There's nothing to apologize for, we've made it work." She shared a smile with Chris which he reciprocated. She remembered how scared she was when Chris and Carole had first moved to New York to be close to them and help with then a very sickly toddler.
"Still, I just wanted to thank you." There was a silent understanding between the two for a moment before Chris spoke again.
"You, can I ask you for a favor?" His words got caught up in his throat.
"Of course." She leaned closer to Chris.
"Please take care of my boy for me? He's really going to need you."
Finn Hudson hit the wall of his old bedroom in Lima Ohio as he cried his guts out. New York was not clearly his home, meaning it was his home with Rachel, not the one he'd shared with his father.
"Finn?" Santana came in slowly. For once his old friend wasn't the one to banter so she didn't, instead she walked slowly to his side and grabbed his hand, it had swollen began bleeding. "What happened to kicking off chairs? I thought that was safer?" She asked. Finn shook his head. "Rachel sent me after you, she says you've been hiding here all day."
"So?" He asked.
"Finn, you have to deal with this. It's happening right now." Santana said as she grabbed a towel form the bathroom and cleaned his hand. Finn avoided her gaze, the door cracked in slightly to reveal Rachel.
"Here you are." She said softly. She noticed Santana tending his hand and she looked mortified. "Finn, what happened?"
"Apparently he's inventing new ways to kicking over stuff." Santana said. Rachel smiled as she walked over her husband. "I'll make sure people downstairs are well fed." Rachel gave her best fiend a smile. Santana squeezed Finn's forearm as she left the room.
"Does it hurt?" She asked.
"Not so much." He smiled softly. "I should have listened to Blaine about egging kick boxing classes. Although my coordination might mess everything up."
"Finn." She said in all seriousness. "Talk to me please. I know you are hurting, I want to be here for you and you keep avoiding everything." Finn lowered his face, he pulled away from her, siting on the bed. He grabbed a framed picture and smiled bitterly. Rachel recognized the picture, Chris had Finn on his shoulders. She didn't say anything When he began sobbing, she offered he hands as she cradled his head, his much bigger body gave in next to hers as he cried. She held on to his head, running her fingers softly as she kissed his head.
Everything seemed to be going back to normal.
Two weeks had passed since the funeral and Finn felt himself slowly returning to being himself, his father had been laid to rest and so had a piece of Finn's soul. He tried to focus on helping Tim getting the company back in place as he went back to teaching.
Too normal as Cory once again struggled with health ordeals and Finn felt like everything was spiraling out of control again. He stood there with Rachel as Dr. Solomon explained to them the seriousness of Cory's latest heart scare.
"We are going to do all we can to make sure Cory doesn't lose more blood." the woman said. "Right now we are looking into alternatives to make his heart pump blood back normally, but... the prognosis isn't good, he doesn't seem able to hold on to the conduits for more than a couple years..." In his short life, Cory had been subjected to more than five surgeries, all major procedures.
"What does that mean?" Rachel asked, she searched for Finn's face.
"It means if he rejects this new procedure, his heart will be too weak to support anything anymore."
"He is going to die." Finn said coldly. Rachel snapped her head up.
"I'm going to do everything in my power so that does not happen." Susan said brushing Rachel's arm softly. "But worst case scenario, he will need a heart transplant."
Santana was shocked to get a phone call from a startled Rachel. She had been staying with Cory at the hospital while her fathers took care of the kids, Finn had gone home to clear his head and had not come back. It was way passed midnight and he didn't show any signs, she had tried calling him but his phone had gone straight to voice mail. "Santana, what if..."
"Rachel listen to me. I'm going to get Kurt to stay with you, I'll find Finn don't worry." She could hear her cry on the other line. "He isn't dead Berry, not if he knows what's good for him..."
"Are you sure this is safe?" Blaine asked worriedly as he followed Santana inside the bar. She could have been the toughest gal around but Santana knew this could get ugly and she needed witnesses for when she found Finn drunk off his ass. "Oh no." Blaine said when he spotted Finn leaning against the counter with a beer in his hand.
"What did I tell you? Saint Finn drunk..." Santana said rolling her eyes and dragging Blaine along.
"Santana, Good, I was wondering when someone would show up to get him." Auggie, the barman said.
"Hey there guys" Finn said softly. "What are you doing here?"
"Saving you from going beyond embarrassing yourself" Santana glared at him. "Why aren't you answering your phone?" Finn bit his lip. He wasn't wasted but it was clear he had been drinking.
"Because Rachel keeps calling me." He admitted. "And I know she's mad at me because I'm not at the hospital..."
"Right, spending all your money on booze, money you don't have." Santana said harshly. Finn glared at her and then told Augie to get him another beer.
"I don't think that's a good idea bud." the older man said. "I think you've had enough for tonight, why don't you let your friends take you home?"
"There's no one there" Finn said plopping his face in front of Auggie like a little boy. "I'm all alone."
"Ay Dios" Santana gasped as she pulled Finn's shirt collar. "Listen Auggie, whatever he drank put it on me." Blaine helped Santana get Finn on his feet. Auggie said goodbye to them as Finn fought against Blaine and Santana.
"So what now?" Blaine asked as he looked back on Finn who was somehow put in the backseat of Santana's car after a big of struggle.
"Now we sober him up and pray that Rachel is still glad to be married to him tomorrow." Santana answered.
"Ow..."Finn muttered as Santana slammed the frying pan down on the kitchen sink just to provoke him. "Stop that!"
"No, not until you stop acting like a stupid baby Orca." Santana said putting a weird looking drink in front of him. "You need to get yourself out of your misery Finn."
"Why? Misery is all I have left" Santana was about to reply when she couldn't find a good enough answer for him.
"You really think so huh? Well I didn't get that vibe from your crying wife last night, or this morning when your child asked if he could talk to you." Finn looked away from her. "How is that miserable Lurch? Tell me..."
"I don't know." He said tiredly. "I guess it's not."
"Look." Her tone softened. "I know you just lost your dad and Cory being sick only makes it worse but it's not like you haven't been here before. Back when we graduated, you didn't have Rachel or a direction to go to and yet you found it, when you kept going until all you wanted began falling into place." Finn smiled softly. "My dad got me this guys number, a cardiologist, he's said to be the best although he's retired, he has agreed to come and take a look at Cory, see if he can get him ahead on the transplant list somehow. " They shared a silent agreement as Santana told him to go get ready to meet Rachel at the hospital.
"WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!" his wife snapped as soon as she saw him. "I THOUGHT SOMETHING BAD HAD HAPPENED TO YOU!"
"I'm sorry Rach." He said softly. "I'm..."
"Don't I'm sorry Rach me!" she said. "This, this isn't about you! I understand we just lost your dad, believe I do but... do you want to lose Cory too, Finn?"
"Of course not." He bit his lip. "I didn't know what to do, I was... feeling lost..."
"Then you should have come to me Finn, I've never not once have left your side when things got rough, and they have been pretty messed up lately."
Rachel was mad. She had just cursed. In front of her dads and Carole.
Destiny has a funny way of working, sometimes it isn't funny, it is sick. And somehow it just works.
"Finn, Rachel... this is Richard Stone." Dr. Solomon said as Finn stared at the familiar face in front of him. "Dr. Stone is a cardiologist from Memphis who is here to help us with Cory."
"Finally." Dr. Stone said shaking Rachel's hand first when he registered who it was . "It's nice to put a face to the name." Rachel frowned. "It's nice to meet you, although I wish it had not been under these circumstances.
"So he's Richard Stone?" Rachel said as they both stared at the man examining their child.
"Yes... I didn't know he was a doctor, he never told me anything that suggested it."
"Funny huh?" His wife said with a small smile. Finn shrugged. She could see he was still sorry about the night before and he wouldn't let it go. She took his hand in hers. Finn closed his eyes at her touch. "We'll get trough this Finn, we always do." Finn looked at her and something inside him clicked. She had said the same about Chris and he had died.
"Mr and Mrs. Hudson." the nurse said before Finn could say anything. "The doctor would like to have a word with you."
"So what, he has a few weeks to live?" Santana asked Kurt as he explained what the doctor had said. "Finchel is having a pretty crappy start to the new year." She muttered.
"If they don't find a heart, yes..." Kurt mused nervously. "But I'm sure they will. They have to. I don't think not even Finn and Rachel can ever recover if they lost Cory..."
"Nor after what happened with Chris" Blaine added grimly. The three friends sat there in the waiting room as they waited for Carole and Rachel's dads to come back from the cafeteria, otherwise, they'd never talk about this, specially not around Carole.
"It's possible we might find a donor in the next few days." Richard told Finn and Rachel. "I'm going to get in contact with UNOS, see if I can speed things up." the elder man smiled courtly and moved outside the room. Where Finn followed closely.
"To say this is a small world is an understatement huh? I never knew you were a doctor, I mean when you said you worked a lot."
"You didn't ask and medicine is a somewhat consuming job Finn." Richard answered. "Cory tells me your father passed away recently, I'm sorry." Finn smiled softly and accepted his condolences. "But he also tells me you are a teacher now."
"Yeah well, I just listened to a complete stranger telling me I needed to change my life or it would be too late." Finn said knowingly.
"Ah yes. How did that work out?" Richard said.
"It's still working."
Just like it had happened and hit, it happened to be a miracle as Cory was finally found a heart.
"Dad, I'm really scared." Cory said the night before surgery. Finn and Rachel looked at each other. "What if..."
"Hey baby listen to me." Rachel said sternly as she sat by the foot of the bed. "Everything will be fine okay? Tomorrow by this time, you'll feel much better, better than you have ever felt and it will all go away." She brushed his cheek Cory gave her a small smile.
"Okay." The boy said softly. "Dad?"
"Yeah buddy?"
"I think it was grandpa who found me a heart." the simple statement made Finn shiver. "I think he died so he could turn into an angel and help us."
Rachel felt as tears formed in her eyes. She and Finn looked at each other and she knew he was crying as well as he took Cory's hand in his and smiled.
"You know what bud? I think so too. "
Finn Hudson would never stop thanking Richard Stone, nor for the time he helped him realize he wasn't happy with who he was or for the time he had asisted in saving his child's life. It would never not be a moment Finn would be grateful for his family. For his wife and children who everyday showed him the beauty of what it meant to live. From the fact of watching Cory doing laps on the pool without running out of breath or the moment he found out he'd be a father again. To his children's laughter. Or his wife immense love.
Or his chance to do what he loved the most, teaching and somehow influence people's lives like Mr. Shue had done for him, and although he still looked out for his father company, his true talents were inside a classroom. And he knew that, he was just happy it had not been too late for him to realize it.
He would never stop being grateful for the small moments he spent with his father on the last few months of his life. Or for how he learned what kind of man Chris really was.
He would never stop being grateful for the fact that Carole had found love again, funny enough, with Kurt's dad who happened to be as lonely and sad and somehow they made each other so happy.
He would never not be grateful for not missing on his life.
