May
The night sky coated the atmosphere in a sense of mystique and tranquility. The moon and stars her sole companions on the desolate beach. Music and laughter floated down from the Smiths home. May smiled remembering the way Ashley's eyes lit up when Gary proposed, and she couldn't forget Paul's stunt. The night had brought numerous surprises for the young brunet. A cool breeze ruffled her hair and sent shivers down her spine.
May wrapped her arms around her knees and sighed, "They all make it look easy," she whispered painfully her eyes focused on the Little Dipper.
"What are you doing out here," a smooth voice asked her from behind.
May shrugged her shoulders, "I just felt too awkward in there," she glanced back at him, "Are you stalking me Drew?" she questioned a slight smirk on her face.
Drew smirked, "Only in your dreams November."
May rolled her eyes, "Again with the name-calling," she stood from her spot and strode towards him.
He cocked his head in curiosity he opened his mouth to speak before May pressed her finger on his mouth. "You promised you'd stop," she whined removing her finger from his lips and poking his chest.
Drew chuckled, "I know it's just fun aggravating you."
May pouted making Drew laugh, "Sometimes I wonder why I even like you," she mumbled poking him in the chest.
Drew smirked and flipped his hair out of his eyes, "Well unlike you I can pinpoint every reason why I like you."
May blushed at his statement and turned away, "Drew why do you even care about me?" she glanced back at the house and sighed sadly thinking of her friends, "I'm not anything special."
Drew grabbed her chin and turned her face gently to face him, "Yes you are May," he stated.
May pushed him away gently and turned back towards the ocean. The waves crashed gently on the shore blocking out further sound from the celebration coming from the Smith Home. She wrapped her arms around herself and sighed shaking her head.
"Drew you're just wasting your time on me," she turned towards him and smiled sadly, "I'm sorry perhaps it's better if we both forget what happened in the dance studio." She whispered breathlessly looking away in guilt as Drew's eyes flashed in pain.
An uncomfortable silence settled among the two teens, coating them in uncertainty. The air felt thick to the extent May struggled with each breath she took; each gulp of air coming rattled leaving her lightheaded. She closed her eyes as she rubbed her temple with her index fingers trying to dull the slow throbbing that blurred her vision.
May was so consumed in her own ill feelings she did not notice Drew walking towards her until he stood directly in front of her. She gulped feeling her heart accelerate in pace. He was so close his body heat radiated sheltering her from the cool bursts of wind that stirred the sand beneath their feet.
"May why do you continue pushing me away every time I try to get close," he questioned his emerald eyes locked on her. His stare unwavering as he studied her, as if trying to read her mind.
May bit her lip in uncertainty refusing to look at him; knowing deep down she would lose all her resolve. She knew her reasons for keeping him at bay, and she was aware of the pain she was causing him. However, even with this knowledge she tittered on the edge of honesty or deception. May gasped slightly in shock as his warm hand caressed the side of her face gently casting her out of her thoughts.
"If you honestly want me to stop pursuing you May I will," He stated without hesitation, but his eyes wavered in doubt, "All I ask in return is for you to be honest with me. Why do you push me away?" He asked gently urging her for the truth as his thumb rubbed soothing circles on her cheek.
May sighed tiredly, "Because I'm afraid Drew," she pulled away from his touch and sat down on the cool sand.
"Afraid of what exactly May?" He asked sitting beside her but he quickly moved further away as he noted her discomfort.
Love was such a powerful emotion and it held the power to make those who fell under its sweet embrace act in ways they never thought capable. Paul was the perfect example of said case. He went outside his comfort zone to prove how deep his feelings for Dawn ran. While it was a sweet gesture all on its own it reminded May why she was hesitant to deepen her relationship with Drew.
To open herself up to another relationship also meant opening herself to a possible heartbreak. May glanced at him through her peripheral vision and her heart constricted in pain. His expression looked so solemn as he watched her waiting for an answer. She sighed trying to gather her courage.
"I'm afraid that in the end you'll end up breaking my heart," May responded breathlessly hugging her arms tightly around her, "I'm not ready to feel that kind of pain again."
Drew sighed heavily as he rubbed his temple. His lips were held tight and his posture was rigid. "I would never break your heart May," he replied softly his voice smooth as silk.
The air between the two teens felt thick almost suffocating. Neither spoke refusing to look away from one another. Their eyes held each other still as if challenging one another to speak. May opened her mouth not sure of what to say when Drew raised his hand signaling for her to stop.
"I promised you I would wait for as long as you needed me too, and I meant that," He reached for her hand cautiously as if scared she would run away if he made a sudden move.
She couldn't help the small smile that formed on her face as his hand slide gracefully into hers. They fit perfectly as if they had been made for one another.
"When you're ready I'll be here for you," he stated before slowly pressing a light kiss on her forehead.
He turned to walk away but stopped and turned towards her a small smile on his face, "They say when you love something set it free. I suppose that's what I had to do when you dated Sky, but in the end we were reunited. Now I have to set you free again," he turned back towards the Smith Home, "I hope you'll come back to me again."
May clutched her heart trying to ignore the slight twinge of pain as she watched him walk away from her. Once again Drew proved to her that he truly cared deeply for her; enough to give her space to truly come to terms with her emotions. She glanced back into the constellation filled sky and allowed silent tears to fall.
In the end she allowed fear to paralyze her and once again Drew had walked away. May tightened her hands in fists as a spark of determination fueled within her.
No more running away.
