Hello everyone! Here's the next chapter! I'm hoping you all don't find this story going 'too fast' or anything. If I go any slower I'll be writing a novel xD Hope you all enjoy this chapter and I'll see you guys at the bottom of the chapter!
- Harry –
After Jim left the room, Harry walked into the bedroom where Clara was and hugged her from behind. "Let's go out today." He said to her. "Sure. What do you want to do?" She asked. "Buy some things."
"Not that I don't think you should but do you even have the money to do that?" Clara pointed out. "Not to worry. Jim told me that the desk in the lobby had some…compensation money for the crew from the White Star Line. We'll just pick it up before we leave." She smiled and the couple left after a few minutes.
Harry and Clara collected the money from the young lady at the desk and went out of the hotel.
They wandered about for a while. "Do you even know where we're going?" Clara asked. "Sure. I asked Lights for directions on the Carpathia." Harry shrugged and smiled at her as he led her into a jewelry store.
The whole place was so beautiful. The walls were white and glass tables displayed gorgeous (and expensive) necklaces, earrings, bracelets and of course, rings.
They walked up to one of the counters with a middle-aged lady there. "How may I help you?" She asked in a snobbish voice. "Yes Harry, how can she help us? Why are we even here?" Clara whispered in hush tones.
"We're here to buy an engagement ring of course!" Harry patted her hand softly. "What? But I already have your grandmother's ring. That's enough." She tried to convince him. "Well, yes but. I want to give you something Clary. Please, just let me do this for you. You've been so good to me and I want to prove that I can be good as well, and this is one of the few ways I know how." He looked at her with pleading eyes before she sighed and nodded.
Harry's face brightened up immediately. "Miss, we'll just take a look at these rings." He pointed to a few rings in a display case. The lady at the counter nodded, and looked at them condescendingly.
"How about this one?" He pointed to a green emerald one with golden linings. Clara shook her head. "Or that one." He pointed to an amethyst ring. She shook her head yet again. He went on to point out at least five more, to which she said no to all.
As Harry was about to leave, Clara pulled him back and pointed to one ring she liked quite a fair bit.
"That one? But…it's just a silver band!" He said incredulously. "I know but I just need something simple, nothing extravagant." She assured him, placing a hand over his.
"If that's what you're sure you want." Harry said with care in his voice. "Then we'll get this one." He said to the jeweler. The lady took it out and helped to take Clara's finger size and did the necessary. Before she went off to get another ring, Harry whispered a special request in her ear.
"That would cost you extra, you know that right?" The lady peered at him through her glasses. "I know but I want this to be special." He told her. "All right then. Write it down on this piece of paper." She passed him a slip of paper and a fountain pen.
Clara kept trying to peek at what he was writing but the officer wouldn't let her. He then passed it back to the lady. "All right then. Come back in an hour or so and it'll be done by then." The lady disappeared behind a curtain.
"Are you hungry?" Harry turned his head to the side and asked Clara. She nodded and they left the store, hand in hand.
- Elizabeth -
She woke up the next day, feeling around in her bed and frowning when she found that Jim wasn't there. She freshened herself up in the bathroom and changed into a pastel green dress, putting her hair in a simple bun, folding up the long sleeves since it was such a hot day.
Elizabeth met Victoria, the maid, halfway down the long case of staircase. "Miss Elizabeth! You should have called me up to help you into your dress." She said in an accusing tone. "I didn't need the help, Victoria." Elizabeth called out, gliding down the stairs.
She waltzed into the kitchen and the servants told her that breakfast was served in the dining room to which she strolled into. The face she saw didn't really surprise her but gave her a little shock.
"Good morning Augustine." Elizabeth said coldly before taking a seat diagonally opposite the lady. Augustine's eyes visibly widened before she regained her composure to reply "And to you, Elizabeth."
The two ladies were silent, tucking into their respective breakfasts when Elizabeth spoke up. "How did you get here?"
"Mother put me in a car and sent me home first because you were taking too long with your sailor friends." She said with disdain in her voice. "They're officers." Elizabeth's eyes narrowed as she kept them to her plate. "Same thing. You know, I really do think that being around those uncultured seafarers has had a negative impact on you. You've even lost your manners."
"Don't insult them like that. And don't act like you forgot what happened on the night of the sinking."
"Hmm…refresh my memory." She said in a condescending voice. "You tried to kill Clara and me."
"Oh yes. How is she?" Augustine continues to cut through her food, not looking up at Elizabeth. "Not dead." She looked at her aunt in disbelief. "What a pity." She heard her mutter under her breath and that was the last straw for her.
Elizabeth stood up and banged the table with her fists, glaring at Augustine. "My, what's gotten into you?" She placed a hand over her chest.
"You know, I thought you were heartless before, but this time, you've really outdone yourself Augustine." Augustine stood up and walked over to Elizabeth, about to speak up when she was interrupted. "Attempted murderer." She walked off, but made sure to bump shoulders forcefully with the older lady on her way, almost knocking her over.
- Clara -
After they had their meal, they went back to the store and Harry received a blue velvet box from the same lady. She smirked as she told him to cost of the ring. He took out the money White Star Line left at the counter for him and gave it to her but she claimed that it was hardly enough to cover the cost.
Clara looked away nervously. Harry took a piece of paper out from his pocket and gave it to her. "What is this?" The lady sighed, adjusting her glasses so she could scrutinize it better. "It's the first menu to be served on board the RMS Titanic." He said proudly.
"The 'unsinkable' ship?" She asked skeptically. Harry nodded. "Why would I want this?" She waved it around. "Well, I would assume that it would sell for a lot of money in the future, given that it was one of the things actually on board the ship. But if you don't want it, it's fine by me." He was about to take it back when the lady protested.
"N…No! I mean, I don't normally do this but I'm in a charitable mood today so…I guess this will do." She bid them farewell, congratulated them and resumed her position behind the glass counter.
Clara and Harry left the store. "You know Clary, I haven't actually proposed to you with the new ring." He said. "Well that can't be helped. I mean, you just got it less than five minutes ago, although you shouldn't have gone to the trouble." She laughed sheepishly.
"It's all right. I would do anything for you. But as for the proposal, we should do something about that." She shrugged her shoulders but her eyes widened when Harry got down on one knee. "Harry, what are you doing? Get up!" She whispered quickly. He responded by taking the box out of his pocket.
He opened the box and she gasped. The ring was the same one she had seen earlier, but the words 'Harold & Clarissa' elegantly engraved on it.
"Clarissa Elsie Hayes, will you give me the privilege, for the second time, to be my wife?" He grinned up at her, trying desperately to hide his laughter. Clara's face turned red when she realized that almost everyone around them had their attention directed to Harry and herself, and they were coincidentally in the town square.
"Harry, get up!" Clara said in a soft voice. "Not until you say yes." He continued to grin, thinking that the sight of Clara so embarrassed was adorable. She nodded meekly and he put the ring on her finger as the people around them clapped softly.
Like before, they kissed gently and Clara dragged them off hastily, her face burning with embarrassment but the smile glued onto her face.
- Elizabeth -
After a few hours, Elizabeth's anger subsided but her hate remained. As she walked through the garden, she spotted her grandmother sipping tea at the table, near the entrance. She picked up her skirts and walked over.
"Grandmother." She curtseyed in greeting and kissed her hand gently when Diana outstretched it. She took the seat opposite her when gestured to.
"Grandmother, I would like to go into town tomorrow. May I borrow a chauffer from you?" She asked. Diana raised an eyebrow as she drank her tea and quietly set it down before straightening her posture.
"Whatever for, my dear?" Diana asked, a small smile on her face. "I'd like to visit my friends." Elizabeth answered hopefully. "Who? Those officers from last night?"
Elizabeth nodded. "Really Elizabeth. You shouldn't be hanging around such…uneducated people." Diana said, the fake smile not leaving her face. "Grandmother, I only wish to speak with them. Surely there's nothing wrong with that?"
"As your grandmother, I don't want you to be influenced by such bad company. I'm doing this for your own good." Diana said, her lips now a thin line.
"Why can't you just let me go? It's only for a little while!" Elizabeth pleaded. She wanted desperately to jump over the table and tackle the old lady but she had to remember that she was asking for a favor. She couldn't exactly run to the hotel, as it was not exactly in walking distance so she needed an automobile to get there.
"That's enough Elizabeth. I don't want to hear anymore on the subject." Diana scolded in a mild but stern voice. Elizabeth stood up and walked away angrily.
- Jim -
It had been a little over a week since Jim had last seen Elizabeth and was getting worried. He would have gone to find her but he had no idea where her grandparents' house was. He tried asking Clara but she couldn't remember the address. Both his and Harry's American inquiries were over and in two days, they were to board the Adriatic to return to England to return to their families. He could only hope that Elizabeth would come see him before he had to leave.
- Elizabeth -
Not seeing Jim for so long was taking its toll on her. She seemed to be a lot grumpier and moodier, hostile especially to Augustine. Elizabeth then came to the conclusion that she couldn't wait around for Diana to lend her a chauffer so she took matters into her own hands.
Elizabeth walked out of the front door and to the big, black entrance gates and looked out. She saw the exact same man she had seen the night the Carpathia docked in New York.
The man leaned against his black automobile, smoking. "Sir?" She called out. He turned and looked down at her, as he was very tall. "What do you want, miss?" He asked.
"I…I was just wondering if you could do me a favor." Elizabeth finally found her voice, after being slightly intimidated. The man threw his cigarette onto the road and stepped on it before walking to her, their faces separated by only the gate.
"What kind of favor?"
"I was wondering if you could…take me somewhere and back tomorrow."
"All right. But...why didn't you just tell Lady Diana? She could've sent someone to get me." The man raised an eyebrow.
"She doesn't know I'm going out tomorrow." Elizabeth replied.
"Wait...Am I going to lose my job for this?" The man asked.
"I…don't think so. But if you do this favor for me! I'll give you some of my jewelry! It's very, very expensive." She said, eyes widened.
The chauffer seemed to think on it for a while before nodding, insisting that she keep her jewelry. Elizabeth broke out into a smile and shook his hand from behind the gate. He was a little taken aback but shook her hand anyway.
"Pleasure meeting you, Mr…"
"Albert. Just call me Albert." He said. "And you?"
"Just call me Elizabeth. Or Liz, whichever you prefer."
"All right princess, what time do you want to leave tomorrow and where are we going?" Albert asked, taking back his hand.
"We'll leave right after breakfast, around nine in the morning. We're going to the Waldorf-Astoria hotel." Albert nodded and they said their goodbyes as Elizabeth went back into the house, looking forward to seeing Jim again.
Okay I know cigarettes weren't really 'invented' yet but just humour me. It doesn't play a big part in the story. So...AUGUSTINE IS BACK! Also, for purposes of the flow of the story, I'll be skipping the British inquiries. I'm sorry if you guys were looking forward to it but I had to cut it out :/ I feel really bad for doing this but...just imagine that they covered everything in the American inquiries :)
