Hi everyone! So, I decided that I would post short chapters more frequently than to post long chapters and make you guys wait for like a week. Hope you all enjoy this chapter and I'll see you guys at the bottom of the chapter!
- Jim -
In a few hours, Jim had reached his destination. By this time, it was in the better part of the evening. He took a taxicab to his house. It was a small cottage, which housed his parents and younger sister, Josephine.
Carrying his small baggage, he went up to the door and knocked on it lightly. He waited a few seconds before the door was swung open, revealing a very smiley Josephine. "Jamie!" She yelled happily, jumping on him in a tight hug. "Josie!" He laughed, putting down his bag and returning her hug.
"I'm so glad you're home safe! Oh, I've missed you so much." Josephine let go of him. "I've missed you too Josie. Where is mum and father?" Jim picked up his bag again, following her into the house and closing the door behind him.
"We were having dinner. I've got one of my friends over." Josephine was leading Jim to the kitchen, stopping only when Jim put his bag on the floor by the staircase. "Really? Who?" He asked just as they walked into the room.
"Catherine Owston?" Jim said, shocked.
- Elizabeth -
It had been a few days since she heard about the arranged marriage and she hardly ever left the room. Alissa would always send up her breakfast, much to Georg and Victoria, the original maid's dismay. Diana seemed to close an eye with Elizabeth insisting that Alissa attended to her needs.
Truthfully, Elizabeth had no idea what she was going to do about the arranged marriage, but told herself that she would wait for Jim's letter before she decided what to do.
There was a knock at the door and thinking it was Alissa, she told the person to come in. Jasper walked into the room, sitting next to her on her bed.
"Tell me you didn't have anything to do with the marriage." Elizabeth said, moving a little away from him, hoping desperately it was his parents who made the call.
"It's nice to see you too, Elizabeth." Jasper rubbed the back of his neck. "Jasper. Tell me."
"I arranged it." He said, staring off into the distance. "Jasper…I thought I made it clear that I see you as a friend. Maybe even a brother! Why is it so hard for you to understand that I can't ever be with you?"
"I know but…I just can't stop thinking about you. I love you Elizabeth." Jasper said, moving closer to her. "No you don't! How would you of all people know what love is?" Jasper immediately stopped and his smile faded into a frown, standing up and walking over to the door. "You will marry me, like it or not." He whispered darkly and eerily before leaving the room, softly closing the door behind him.
- Jim -
"James. How very good to see you again." Catherine slithered out of her seat and walked over to Jim, hugging him, making sure that her curves hit all the right places.
Catherine was a very coquettish woman. Tall and slim with a pale complexion, she held many of the men's hearts, including Jim's when he was a lot younger. Her cropped hair was a fiery red, mostly hidden under a turquoise hat with a long dress to match. She pulled away and looked flirtatiously into his brown eyes with her own grey ones. Her thin lips were coated in a deep red, bolder than women in her time cared to wear.
"It's a p…pleasure to see you again after so many years, Catherine." Jim said, willing his red cheeks to cool down.
"Why don't you two come over and have some dinner before you start catching up now." Jim's mother, Evelyn said from the table, smiling at her son. He realized, after a brief introduction, that his little sister was getting married. Her future husband, Max, seemed nice enough. He was a little shocked, but told himself that he would talk to her about it later.
"Mum. Dad." Jim said with love and care in his voice before going to his parents and hugging them individually before taking his seat at the dinner table, next to his father at the head and diagonally opposite Catherine with Josephine next to him.
"Jimmy, I know this might…rake up some bad memories but, what happened that night on the Titanic?" His mother asked. Jim visibly winced at that question, but went on to explain accordingly to the best of his ability.
"How about you? How did you make it, if you let Mr. Lowe take charge of Lifeboat 14?" His father questioned curiously. Jim took a deep breath, before recalling that night. The numbness he felt due to the icy cold water, piercing through his skin. The blur his mind was in. The double vision that haunted him for hours.
"By the time she went down into the water, I was already in. I jumped in a little before the ship broke into half." "The ship can't break into half." Josephine interrupted. "Keep quiet sweetie." Their mother said, before looking to Jim to continue.
"As I was saying, I was in the water by then. I was trying to swim away but got pulled down by the suction. While all the air in my lungs left me, I felt a hand grab onto my wrist with a tight grip. When I got to the surface, I saw that the hand belonged to Titanic's second officer, my good friend Charles Lightoller. We ended up staying on top of one of the collapsibles throughout the night, under his infallible command and eventually made it together, reaching the Carpathia in the early morning." Jim smiled as he recounted it. It was nothing to be happy about, but it made him feel good that he had survived through such a harrowing night, especially with his friend.
The whole dinner was fairly short, but was mostly filled with Jim sharing his experience on the RMS Titanic. He didn't mention Elizabeth though. That was another story for another day. Of course, he couldn't ignore the suggestive glances Catherine kept throwing his way and the light strokes against his leg, which he was positively sure that it was Catherine's leg.
After dinner had ended, Josephine and Max brought Catherine and Jim to the sitting room with a fireplace she set alight. "I'll go fetch us some warm tea. Come along and help me, Max." Josephine skipped off, leaving the two same-aged friends alone as the shy man followed after her.
Catherine moved her seat and sat next to Jim, a little too close for his comfort. "Hello James." She said in a seductive voice. "Catherine."
"I haven't seen you since we were what? In secondary school? Oh, you were such a baby back then." Jim chuckled. "But look at what a man you are now…" She started to lean her weight against him, and he moved backwards, desperately trying to keep her a distance away from him. "I'd like if you could keep your distance a little, Catherine." He said sheepishly, gently pushing her shoulders back.
"What's this? Back in the day you were desperate to even so much as catch my attention, James. Even confessed to me in front of the whole class, you did. I'm just reciprocating your feelings." Catherine leaned into him again, trailing her slim fingers down his well-built chest.
"That! Was a very long time ago. I've grown up. Not to say that you aren't attractive. You are a very beautiful young lady, but not the one for me." He said politely.
Before Catherine could say another word, Josephine returned with a tray of teacups and a teapot, her lip makeup unknowingly smudged. "I made your favorite tea, Jamie. Peppermint!" She beamed, setting it down on the table. "What were you two talking about?" Josephine poured the tea for each of them and served accordingly. Max strolled in after that, smiling.
"Nothing much." Catherine said in a lazy tone of voice, taking the fragile cup from her friend. "Well…cheers then!" Josephine said brightly, taking sips from her tea as her brother, Max and Catherine did the same.
Though Jim didn't look at her, he could feel Catherine's unsettling gaze burn through his cup. Her cat-like eyes stared at him as she sipped her tea.
'This should be interesting.' She thought to herself.
NEW CHARACTERS ALERT! Catherine Owston, Jim's childhood friend and Josephine, his sister. Max as well ( I don't have plans for him so I don't think he'll play a big role in this story ). I really based Josephine off Emily Kinney and Catherine off Adelaide Clemens in The Great Gatsby. Also, you guys finally get how Jim survived! I can't say that he got onto another lifeboat but I can say that it was more believable for him to be on the collapsible with Charles.
So guys, after this story ( because it's one of the few stories that I really do love writing ), I'm planning to make a sequel. Any thoughts? I can't reveal too much or else all of you will know what's going on!
