Many decisions were made since Bonnie passed on. Albert informed Elizabeth where Georg had been buried. It shocked her that it was the exact same place where he and Bonnie used to go when he was courting her. Bonnie's last letter was as follows:
Dear Elizabeth,
Forgive me for leaving you like this. I've had this ailment for as long as I can remember and it feels like a relief having it off my back. Before I found you, I didn't know what to live for. Georg and I could never be together and I didn't have family or loved ones to spend my ageing years with. But you changed everything. I love you so much. You were the light in my last weeks on Earth and I wouldn't have given you up for anything. There are days when I regret not being there for you when you were younger, to see you grow up, to nurture you and do everything your mother wasn't able to accomplish. I still miss Helen. And every time I looked at your face, I would be reminded of the days where she was still with me. You are just like her in so many ways. But enough about Helen. I sincerely, truly hope that no matter what happens in the future, that you'll be living in bliss. I know James will treat you well. Times in your life, when you feel alone, don't be sad. You have your mother, father, Georg and I looking out for you. Speaking of which, Georg's death hurt me hard. If it weren't for your support, I don't know what I would've done. Thank you. Please don't feel bad that I'm gone. At least I'll finally be reunited with my love. I ask for one favor. When I am finally gone, please bury me next to Georg. It would mean the world to me. Thank you and May the Lord bless you, Elizabeth.
Bonnie Callaghan
2nd August 1912
The four remaining people in the house planned on moving. They had put the house of memories up for sale and it wasn't long before someone bought it.
In a week's time, the new owners would be moving in and the house would no longer be Bonnie's. Harry and Clara had long packed their bags and waited in the sitting room for Elizabeth.
Elizabeth held Jim's hand tightly as they walked to the lake, where Bonnie had first spoken to her. "I don't know what to say. I didn't know you long…But I feel like you were one of the real family I'd ever had. I miss you. I…I hope you're h…happy, wherever you are."
Elizabeth started to cry. Jim wrapped his arms around her, his embrace full of warmth and comfort. Elizabeth cried into his shoulder, feeling safe in his arms. "Hush…it's all okay." He whispered into her ear, kissing the top of her head.
"I just…everyone I love is leaving me. Mom…Dad…Georg…now Bonnie…" She croaked in her hoarse voice, muffled against his shirt. "I know. But we're never going to leave you. I will never leave you. For as long I'm breathing, I'll hold you tightly. Never let you go." Jim said in a soft and reassuring voice.
Elizabeth pulled apart a little and kissed him on the lips, resting her hands on his broad shoulders. He kissed her back gently, rubbing her back soothingly. "I love you…" She smiled at him through her tears. "I love you too." He grinned, kissing her once more.
- Harry -
"These next few months aren't going to be easy. The money from the house isn't going to be enough." Harry held Clara's hand as they sat on the steps of the porch of the house.
"I know. But…It would be nice to have a change, from all of this drama." Clara leaned her head on his shoulder. "I know. Finding a house isn't that easy. But we can make it. Together." Harry smiled down at her, a grin she returned. He pecked her on the forehead and wrapped his arm around her small shoulders, pulling her up against him.
They stayed this way for a while before Clara spotted Elizabeth in the distance. "Look, they're back." The couple met them halfway. "How are you?" Clara rubbed Elizabeth's arm. "I'm fine, thank you." Elizabeth smiled as much as she could, but her puffy eyes gave away that she had been crying.
A black cab pulled up at the road just outside the house. "I'm really going to miss you." Clara moved forward and hugged Elizabeth so tightly. "Well…we'll be seeing each other soon right?" Elizabeth smiled. They pulled away.
"I'm going to miss you, lad." Harry pulled Jim into a side-hug. "Me too, old man." Jim grinned with his signature cheeky smile. "Shut it. See you two in Santa Monica." Harry said to both of them before giving Elizabeth a hug. Clara and him then went into the cab. Elizabeth and Jim waved to them as the car drove off.
Elizabeth and Jim sat on the steps, laying their bags down next to the mailbox. Elizabeth laid her head on his lap while he stroked her back comfortingly. The pair said nothing, just enjoying their last few moments there.
Twenty minutes later, another black car pulled up just outside the house. "He's here." Jim woke a sleeping Elizabeth up. He smiled and tucked her hair neatly behind her ear before helping her to her feet.
Albert came out of the car and helped Jim load the bags in. The three then slid into the automobile as Albert started towards the docks.
Jim held Elizabeth's hand in his as he let her rest her head on his shoulder.
- An hour and a half later -
The journey was quiet, as the two men knew that Elizabeth needed her space after all that had happened. They had just reached the docks. Jim got out first before helping Elizabeth down.
Albert walked over to her and bent down to hug her. "I'm really going to miss you, princess." He rubbed her back. "Me too." She pulled back a little and smiled at him, giving him a peck on the cheek. Albert shook Jim's hand before he watched the couple walk away. "Have a safe trip this time!" He yelled out for good measure.
"Buzz off!" Elizabeth yelled back, smiling.
- Clara -
Clara and Harry boarded the train to Santa Monica in no time. Taking their seats opposite each other, just next to the window, they got comfortable and smiled.
"I'm excited, Clary." Harry said. "So am I. Starting a new life, in a new place. I wonder if we'll start a family together." She thought aloud, her eyes twinkling as she did so. Harry frowned and looked out of the window. This didn't go unnoticed by Clara.
"What's wrong?" She asked him, concerned. "N…nothing!"
"Harry, don't you think I know you enough to tell if you're upset?"
"I…I just…I don't want…children." He said in a low voice, not turning to look at her. Clara's heart sank. She had always wanted children, one of the biggest highlights of having a family.
"It's…it's all right." She tried her best to smile at him. Harry immediately felt guilty when he turned to finally look at her. "I mean…maybe later on. I might want a kid or two but…not now." He reassured her.
"I can wait. But I don't want to force you into anything you don't want." Clara reached for his hand and squeezed it warmly. It was almost a motherly feeling.
"You're wonderful." Harry kissed her on the forehead, pulling her close to him, so much so that she sat on his lap.
"H-Harry!" She was shocked, looking around to see if anyone had noticed. "Relax darling." He chuckled softly. Clara slowly warmed up to him and buried her head in the crook of his neck, falling asleep, safe in his arms.
- Elizabeth -
When she and Jim were walking up the gangway, they held hands. She couldn't help but notice the slight shiver in his hand, as if he was remembering the events of Titanic's sinking. Elizabeth squeezed it a little. "It's going to be all right from now on." He gave her a small smile before willing himself to continue walking.
The ship they got on wasn't anywhere near comparable to Titanic, and once you've been on the grandest ship ever, it was hard to go back to less luxurious ships.
They settled for a second-class room and stayed there for most of the journey.
One night, Elizabeth left the room to go to the washroom. When she came back, she heard soft crying coming from inside. She knocked lightly on the door and entered.
Jim was lying on the bottom bunk, facing the wall as he sobbed into his pillow. Elizabeth's eyes widened. She'd never seen Jim cry before. She walked over to the bed and sat at the edge, slowly running her fingers through his hair.
"Shh…It's okay." She said in her softest and gentlest voice. Jim didn't respond for a minute before he turned over, hugging her so tightly, as if he was afraid that she would leave if he let go.
They stayed like that for a while before they lay down on the bed. The bed was too small for them, but Jim held her so close that they fit just right.
Before he fell asleep, he heard her whisper "I love you."
I would say that the next chapter calls for MAJOR OMGMOMENT, but then again, it might just be me. I don't like writing sad things but I find that with sad things, people are able to feel more empathy, thus sad and crying Jim :( Also, I wanted to show a little of how the disaster really changed the survivors' lives, and the impact it had on them. Mentally.
Anyway, the next chapter is the LAST chapter of this WHOLE STORY. HUGE HUGE Author's note in the next chapter so God bless your soul if you're not into that kind of stuff.
