In Need Of A Little Guidence

' The music blasted through she speakers as she entered the gymnasium doors. Blue and gold balloons hung along the walls, with matching holographic streamers that hung from the ceiling to gather at the center. A large mirror ball held it all together, the lights reflecting everywhere. Among the various tables and photo booths the students danced to Linkin Park's " Burn it down". A pretty blonde girl squealed in excitement beside her and Snow White smiled at her enthusiasm. " This is so awesome!" The girl gushed. She agreed. But there was something a little more important she had to do.

" I'm going to go find-" The room changed. The hallway of the building was lit much brighter than inside where the prom was being held. A thump to her right. Voices. Who...? Curiosity getting the better of her Snow silently walked over to the door, the voices becoming more distinct. A girl's laughter... She stilled with unbelieving eyes as she watched it play out in front of her. Anger, confusion, hate, humiliation and a myriad of so many other things she was just too damn angry about played her senses. She made a perfect about-face then began storming down the hall, her anger growing with every step she took. The scene changed. She was back in the gymnasium, talking to the blonde. " I think I need to go."

Her friend blinked at her in confusion. " You mean, leave prom?" A blur of words, a rush of emotions, and then the other girl was gripping her hand comfortingly. " Are you sure?" Snow's smirk softened into a reassuring smile.

" Positive. The walk home isn't far. I'll be fine." ' Her eyes opened slowly as awareness began creeping in to her body. What was that? A dream? No...It felt so much stronger than that. A memory? Snow focused hard on what she had seen. She was at a high school prom. She had been with a friend. She went to find... Someone. She was hurt. She wanted to go home. She said the walk wasn't long. Did she really walk home? Why wasn't she there? She looked around herself, coming back to the present and inhaled softly in wonder. The sun was shining brightly illuminating everything and the room was absolutely beautiful. She looked to the window and her heart reached out to him. He had stayed. He was huddled against the window, his arms around his knees and his head resting on his arms. And of course he was holding onto his staff even in his sleep.

She didn't want to wake him. How long had he been watching over her? To know that he even did that warmed her in such a way. But this was important. ' Sorry, Jack.' Snow White slid out of the bed and straightened her hair. She walked quietly over to the other teen and gently touched his shoulder. " Jack?" No response. " Jack?" His whole frame shot up, his eyes wide and alert.

" I'm awake!" Snow giggled at him. He was like a kid who had just been caught sleeping in class. Hearing her giggle he looked at her and his body relaxed as he smiled sleepily at her.

" Morning, Snow." He covered his mouth with his hand as he yawned hugely. An apologetic smile followed not too far behind. " Sorry. So, what's with the wake-up call? His face became serious at his own words. She had woken him up. Was something wrong? " Are you okay?"

" Jack I...I had a dream last night. But I think it was more. I think I remember something." He was definitely awake now. He hopped off of the seat of the window.

" About what? Who you were? How you got here? What was it?" His questions were rushed as if he were afraid that she would forget if not answered in a timely manner. She shook her head and ran a hand through her hair, twisting the ends as she briefly pondered his questions.

" I don't know. I just know it was a memory. Maybe... I think." He wasted no time. Jack took her by the hand and began leading her away.

" Okay, we gotta tell the guys about this." The door was practically thrown open in his haste and together they sprinted down the halls, weaved through the numerous yetis they met along the way and jogged up the winding levels of the castle work shop. She had to practically run in order to keep up with his as he more or less dragged her to the main area of the building. Tooth was hovering near the globe, firing off destinations and names as she pointed to various places on the sparkling globe. North was seated by the fire in a high-backed red chair sipping what Jack suspected would be cocoa. In his hands was a green felt folder and a stack of impressive size was sitting next to him on a simple round desk. Bunnymund was pacing leisurely about the room, his eyes roaming over a large map of his own tunnels. Sandy was the first to notice the couple and waved enthusiastically at them with both hands.

" Hey guys!" The guardians all looked up at him, their faces playing confusion as a panting Jack and Snow White nearly stumbled to a stop in the center of the room. " Snow White's remembered something!" Everyone stopped whatever it was they had previously been doing and North guestured to a small unoccupied red and gold couch which both youths sat down ( Or fell on) hastily. Tooth darted from her place beside the globe to hover near North by his chair.

" You remembered something?! What was it!?" Snow sighed and shrugged.

" I'm not sure. I dreamed it all last night, but I'm positive it was more than that. I don't really know how important what I saw was though." She finished lamely. North set down his folder and rubbed both of his large hands together in anticipation.

" Vat was it you see?" He asked excitedly, leaning forward in his throne-like chair.

" It was all kind of confusing. I kept seeing different things." Aster hopped over to a blue and gold stool across from her and sat down, his paws on his knees as he stared at her.

" Okay, so what happened in this vision of yours?" She took a deep breath, blew it out and let her shoulders drop helplessly.

" Honestly it didn't make much sense. In my dream-or memory, I was at this high school prom. There was this blonde girl with me. I think she was my friend. I wanted to go find someone, but I don't know who it was. Then I was outside of the prom in a brightly lit hallway. The school hall I guess. Then I heard noises coming from a door, so I followed, then listened. I heard voices but I don't know who's." A helpless shrug. " Then I remember being really angry. Like, really angry like I wanted to hurt someone. I also felt sad, humiliated and a lot of other things. I don't know if I did something stupid or what. I just remember those feelings. Then I was talking to my blonde friend again. I told her I was going home. That I was going to walk. I said it wasn't far, told her not to worry...then that's it. I woke up."

The guardians had absorbed it all, not one of them speaking. So she had remembered something. ' She was at her high school prom. Well, that explains the way she's dressed.' Jack mused. Then another detail hit him hard. She had told her friend she was walking home. Had she gone alone? " Snow..." He stood up from his place beside her on the couch to stare down at her, his expression hard. " Did you walk alone? Do you remember?" She nodded without hesitation.

" Yeah. I walked home alone. I guess. I know for a fact I was alone." One of the few details she had that she was absolutely certain of. ' So then...if I was alone, then what?' Jack it seemed, was all to ready to answer her silent question. He growled in frustration and stared down disbelievingly at her. She walked home. ALONE?! DID SHE HAVE ANY IDEA HOW CARELESS AND INSANE THAT WAS?!

" Snow that was stupid! You never go anywhere alone at night! You should know better!" Anger and hurt stabbed at her chest and she shot up from the couch and defensively crossed her arms, her hands fisting themselves tightly. She needed help. She needed to sort out what few memories she had and figure it out. She did NOT need to be scolded like a little girl!

" Well from what I know I was going through a lot that night so I probably wanted to be alone! I wasn't thinking, okay!?"

" That's probably what got you killed!" He snapped. Snow White glared daggers at him, his own glare piercing like jagged ice. But that wasn't going to scare her. She wasn't backing down.

" So I did something stupid! Sue me! Is that what you're saying?! I deserved what I got then?!" Jack's eyes went from piercing anger to hurtful disbelief. How could she say that? He stepped back from her, shaking his head.

" Snow I...no that's not what I meant." She didn't know what to think. Only one thought dominated her mind at this moment.

" But you thought it. Even if it was just for a second. Didn't you?" She asked quietly. He wanted so much to tell her she was wrong. But he couldn't. If one is alone at night and caught unawares by a stranger, then you are likely to get hurt. Everyone knows this fact. Every child is told horror stories about it, and the lesson is drilled in to them practically the moment they start walking. Never walk alone at night. It was a fact and Snow White chose on that night to ignore it. One could say her death was most likely inevitable. Oh, sure. You could compare it to a child being told over and over to not touch a hot stove. They know better. If the child decided one day to ignore the rule they know and touch the stove then the burn they will receive is the consequence to a well-deserved lesson. But there was one important thing that separated the two scenarios.

Snow White hadn't deserved to die.

The guardians watched the pair, unsure how to react. Tooth hovered at a safe distance, wringing her hands as if unsure whether to give the two of them privacy or keep watch. Bunnymund had watched the fight as one would watch a tennis match, his head whipping back and fourth from one speaker to another as the words were thrown at the other. North's posture was ridged as he watched from his chair, his lips parted as if he might interject at any moment. Sandman only watched the pair with sorrowful eyes shaking his head sadly. The silence in the room was nearly stifling. You could hear a feather drop the silence was so profound. Jack knew he had to say something. Anything! But alas, it was NOW that his vocal chords decided to shut down and his throat was rendered useless. Snow on the other hand knew she had her answer.

Suddenly the room was just a little too crowded for her liking. She looked away from Jack, from all of them and let her gaze fall to the floor. " Excuse me." She murmured. She turned around and walked away, the soft clicking of her heels on the marble sounding as loud as a jackhammer to her ears. Her eyes stung as he face heated up with embarrassment and hurt. But she wouldn't cry. The last thing she wanted right now was to break down in front of them all. ' And here I am dead. Who knew I could still do that.' She walked down the spiraling floors to the guest rooms and easily found her previous room. The door had been left open in their earlier haste to talk to the guardians. Snow walked in, closed the door then locked it for good measure. It was then that she ran to the bed and clambered on to the velvet comforter to curl up like a cat. She pressed her face into the pillow and finally let her tears break free.

Stupid...why was she doing this? Breaking down like she had been defeated. And why was she crying over what Jack had said ( or not said) in the first place? Snow sat up and wiped the tears from her eyes. It did no one any good to cry. She climbed out of the bed and walked over to the wardrobe, opening the door. Inside the right door was a full length mirror. Her face wasn't red, and her eyes weren't puffy. In fact one would be hard-pressed to even tell she had been crying at all. ' That's weird...' Her hair was slightly tangled, though. She looked around the room and spotted a silver hair-brush on a nightstand table-unused she guessed from the fine layer of dust she swiped off of it. Snow sighed heavily as she sat down on the bed, bouncing slightly as her weight disturbed the springs. As she began stroking her hair with the small bristles she began humming a song. Then without thinking the humming turned into words.

" The roots of love grow all around,

but on me they come a tumbli'n down

everyday heartaches grow a little stronger,

I can't stand this pain much longer.

I walk in shadows searching for light,

cold and alone no comfort in sight.

Hoping and praying for someone to care

always moving and going nowhere.

What becomes of the brokenhearted?

Who had love that's now departed.

I know I've got to find

some kind of peace of mind.

Help me please..." Her voice trailed off as she sang the last word. Her brushing stilled, the knots having been worked out awhile ago actually. She knew there was more to the song. But right now she simply couldn't remember. Ironic that she would chose to sing that one, wasn't it? A soft knock brought her out of her musings and she looked up to see the door was slightly open, Jack watching her. " Snow...?"

Jamie ran fast through the halls as the final school bell rang for the day. He had to find Jack! He had to go to his pond and tell him what he knew! He skidded around the corner wisely slowing his pace just in case he ran in to anyone else. ( Especially Molly. Once was bad enough. He wasn't looking to break his record!) And was surprised to see her. Molly was holding on to the straps of her red backpack, smiling sadly up at a man. A teacher? His hair was a light shade of brown combed back, his brown eyes staring down at her behind a thin frame of squared black glasses. His shirt was a blue button-down, topped with a black open vest finished off with a black tie and casual blue jeans. He looked old enough to be a teacher, but young enough that the girls could like him-he was a pretty good-looking guy. Definitely teacher crush worthy. Happily Jamie noticed a band of gold around a certain ring finger. He was married. Ha!

He cautiously walked up to the pair, just as the man was placing a hand on her shoulder. "...Can come to me anytime you need to, okay? And feel free to give your parents my number." He handed her a piece of yellow paper, which she accepted wit a quiet thank you.

" Uh, Molly?" Her head snapped up as her eyes went wide with surprise.

"J-Jamie? What are you doing here?" Her tone was surprised, with a dash of annoyance. He supposed he deserved that. After all he had just interrupted what had sounded like an important conversation.

" I was just on my way out. The buses will be here soon." Her eyes lit up as realization dawned on her.

" Oh man! School's over! My history exam-!" The teacher smiled kindly down at her and lifted his hand from her shoulder.

" Don't worry about it. I've already drawn up a note for Mrs. Partridge. You can take it tomorrow." Molly relaxed and nodded.

" Okay well, I've gotta go. See you later." Then without looking at either one of them she ducked her head and ran down the hall. Jamie looked back at the man and tilted his head curiously.

" What was that all about?" The teacher frowned in confusion. When he spoke his tone was light and casual, expression just as curious.

" You don't know? I'm surprised the rumor mill hasn't reached you yet. You are...?" Oh, duh! Here he was interrogating a grown-up and he hadn't even given his name. Rude. He stuck out his hand and shook the older man's.

" I'm Jamie Bennet. Molly's a friend of mine. You are...?" The teacher smiled as Jamie mimicked his earlier question. He shoved his hands casually in his jean pockets and jerked his head to the door. The wood was endowed with a black plaque with bold white letters. GUIDENCE COUNCILOR. It was actually quite noticeable. ' Way to be an idiot, Jamie.' Jamie smiled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck. " Oh."

" I'm David Crowley. The school's guidance councilor. But I think here you gotta call me Mr. Crowley. School policy and whatever. Makes me feel old though." Jamie laughed with this new acquaintance at the mention of his title. This teacher-Mr. Crowley...he was actually pretty...cool. ( Well, as far as grown-up went.) So now that that was squared away...

" So Mr. Crowley, what was going on with Molly?" He sighed and ran a hand through his finely combed hair.

" Well, long story short she's dealing with a lot of problems right now. Do you know what doctor/patient confidentiality is?" Jamie shook his head. " I'm a licensed psychiatrist, which is a really big word for shrink-which technically makes me a doctor. And Doctor/patient confidentiality means that I'm not really allowed to talk about my patients to other people outside of family." Jamie absorbed this information slowly. ( This guy was a shrink? But how? He was too cool!)

" So, that means you can't talk about Molly. Except to her Mom and Dad...?" Mr. Crowley nodded at him and smiled.

" See? I knew you'd get the hang of it." He scrutinized the boy under a suspicious stare as a small smile played on his lips. " What I don't get is if you and Molly are friends, then why hasn't she talked to you?" Busted! Jamie smiled sheepishly at him and gripped the handles of his backpack tightly.

" Well, I tried talking to her earlier, but she didn't wanna tell me." Mr. Crowley knelt down on one knee and placed a hand on Jamie's arm.

" Then that means she's not ready to talk just yet. Don't pressure her, Jamie. Just keep being her friend, keep being there for her. And one day, when she's ready, she'll talk to you. Right now you job is to just be her friend. Okay?" Jamie nodded and smiled at the older man.

" Okay. Thanks Mr. Crowley." The older man stood up, then a frown played on his face.

" Hey...aren't the buses packing up right about now?" The bus-THE BUS!

" Oh shit! Gotta go!" Jamie waved back to the teacher and sprinted down the hallway, Mr. Crowley's voice fading after him.

" Hey! Easy on the language, kid!"

The sunlight glistened on an object on the floor. He walked leisurely up to the item and smiled. It was that lovely flower hair pin she had worn before. A fine piece of craftsmanship indeed. He picked up the pin as reverently as he would a rosary and then walked over to a glass cabinet. Inside were various things. Innocuous things: Family photos, an antique vase, a silver ribbon tied into a bow, a small stuffed rabbit, a diamond wristwatch, a silver charm bracelet with a blue butterfly, an apple, and a gold humming bird chained to the links. It was next to the rabbit that he placed the silver hairpin, wiping it clean with a cloth so that it shined brightly in the sunlight. Oh, how it brought back such memories. The rabbit was small-only eight inches high, with grey floppy ears and a red bowtie around it's stuffed neck.

It had been three years after the death of his beloved Tess, and her sliver hair ribbon he had never parted with, for it had invoked in his imagination an excitement which was barely containable in his soul. A thirst had been born in him. Sex wasn't enough. Simple sex didn't hold intimacy for him. When the girl's eyes closed in ecstacy their focus wasn't wholly on him. Only what they felt him doing to them. No...he wanted to be seen when he was intimate. The second kill proved to be as fast as it was overwhelmingly satisfying. A little girl. Seven years old. Emma Scorpio had been her name. Her hair had been light brown, her eyes like chocolate. Her pale skin and delicate body was like flower petals warmed in the sun. The downy smell of her pretty yellow dress had been so enticing.

He knew her as well as he might know any of the children in his neighborhood. He played the good-boy to the outside world. He painted fences for the neighbors, mowed lawns for the elderly, gave the kids popsicles from his freezer in the summer. Babysat some of the younger kids for a couple of hours after school. Yes, to everyone he was the " Good kid who always worked hard." And that day he decided his pay was three years overdue. Emma had been riding her bike outside, on the bike trails near the park. It was a long trail, surrounded by trees and creeks. It had been perfect. He set up a place in the woods: A zip-up camping blanket. A blue tarp he happened to find abandoned served as the tent. A Hershey's chocolate bar. Perfect.

He waited along the trail with his own bike. It didn't take her long. He waved Emma over, his heart hammering in anticipation. " Hey, Emma!" The little girl smiled at him. She didn't know him well, but knew him enough to not be nervous. He gave her popsicles. He was one of her neighbors. She stopped her bike and waved.

" Hi!"

" Hey, wanna see something cool! I found this really cool game out here. You wanna play too?" The little girl was naïve. She nodded eagerly and followed him without question. She marveled at his fort, devoured the chocolate he oh so kindly offered to her. Then...oh, then. He had taken her clothes off of her, she squirming uncomfortably her intuition telling her too late that she was in danger. He stripped, forced her down then made love to this innocent girl. He loved the way she screamed, watched his every movement with morbid fascination even in her pain and horror. But the tightness of her, the delicate feel of her. It was wonderful! When he was spent, when she was silent, her throat raw from screaming, he hit her hard in the head with his fist. Out cold.

He packed her into the camping sac, zipping her in with her clothes, the candy bar cover, and four big rocks of the many he could find. He dressed himself, then taking the unconscious girl he dragged her body to the deepest creek he knew. Then he dropped her body into the water. How long, he wondered, had it taken the child to drown? Oh well. He ran back to the trail, finding her parked bike. Inside of the little wicker basket tied to the bike had been the rabbit. What a charming child's toy. He pocketed the rabbit in his jacket, zipped it up then pedaled away on his own bike making it home in time for dinner. The whole affair hadn't lasted but half an hour. How he wished, wished it could have been longer. The next day Emma Scorpio was reported missing, then her bike was found. Three days later her body was discovered four miles downstream. Huh. Not enough rocks.

All done! Many things came together in this chapter. 1. Snow White remembers something. 2. She sings a certain song. 3. Jack can be an ass sometimes. ( Don't worry he'll make up for it later! ;) 4. Molly's seeing a guidance councilor. 5. We met said guidance councilor Mr. Crowley. 6. We discovered yet another skeleton in our killer's closet. All things are relevant in this chapter. And Mr. Crowley will be helpful in later chapters. BUT HOW!? DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN! Please R&R and as always bless your happy happiness!
