The next few weeks were uneventful, consisting mainly of training, eating and sleeping. Regular work. Nothing at all exciting happened except from an incident with a water bottle, and that was stretching it to be labelled as 'exciting'. However, after dinner one day, something did come up, and it was much more exciting than a water bottle.
"Just two more to go," Jeff said, his face screwed up with concentration. "Just two more to go and then I'll have finally finished a crossword on my own."
"And then your life will be truly complete." Kirstie said, jokingly. Danny liked how Kirstie was getting on with Jeff and Abbie but unfortunately, his victory over her hadn't changed a thing. Their relationship was still precarious. They had been so close only about two months ago and now they were so close to never talking to each other again. Even if nothing happened between them, Danny hoped that they could still be friends.
"It will only be the start." Jeff replied and he then returned to the paper to finish the crossword. Danny leaned over to look at the clues he was stuck on.
"Three across is Ninetales and nine down is forest." Danny said, finishing the crossword with ease.
"I really hate you sometimes," Jeff sighed and filled in the clues. He tossed the newspaper into the bin and slumped back down into the armchair.
"Sorry bud, forgot you wanted to do it on your own," Danny said, protesting his innocence. Just then, the monitor above the door switched on, and Petrel's face appeared.
"Attention!" Petrel said and immediately, all heads in the room pointed towards the monitor.
"Petrel, sir," Danny said, "What is it?"
"We have a mission for you, an important one as well."
"Go ahead."
"Recently, there have been sightings of a rare Pokémon around the region. In fact, it is so rare that there is only one known to exist in the world. Its name is Suicune." Petrel paused for a moment before continuing, "A man by the name of Eusine was on the news a few days ago, claiming to be an expert on Suicune and he also claims to have been chasing the elusive Pokémon for years. We want you and your team to find and capture Suicune. You can use our armoured truck if you need it, just have that Suicune captured and brought back to us. Good luck." At that moment, the monitor switched off and the room filled with silence.
"Right then team," Danny began, "You heard what Petrel said, we need that Suicune."
"With absolutely no information? That's not going to happen." Jeff said. He was right of course.
"Good point, we'll do some research first. To the library."
Danny lead the team through the corridors of the Rocket Base to the library, a vast area with thousands of books for information and research piled up on bookshelves that lined its walls.
"Ok guys, here's the plan." Danny said, getting everyone's attention. "Me, Jeff, Kirstie and Charlie will stay here and read up on Suicune. Adam and George, use the news report to contact Eusine and get as much information as possible without threatening him - this operation needs to be kept secret. Simon, Dave and Ben, you use those computers over there," Danny gestured towards a corner with several computers, "And find information on the internet."
"Yes boss." Everyone said and spread out to do their individual tasks.
"What about me?" Abbie asked. Danny looked up at her. This was her first ever real mission and her little experience would be better used elsewhere.
"You can make us the world's greatest pot of tea."
"Tea?" she said, surprised. "I thought you guys had an awful life, but you still have tea?" Abbie whispered the last part so that only Danny could hear.
"Ah, Abbie." Danny said, "If there's one thing in life we can't go without, it's tea. Imagine doing hours of research without tea to keep you going, it would be torture!" Danny said jokingly and sent her away to do her job.
That night when Danny and his team were eating their dinner, they discussed their findings.
"Alright guys, facts first. What do we know about Suicune?" Danny asked, eating a spoonful of baked beans.
"Well, it's a water type." Charlie said, starting the conversation.
"That's not all though," said Adam, "It can run on water-"
"Due to its legendary speed." Ben finished.
"So it's incredibly fast? Well then we can't chase it. How about battling it?"
"I don't think so," said Jeff, shaking his head. "Only a few people have ever battled Suicune and they were all thrashed.
"Eusine mentioned that." said George, "He said that Suicune usually runs if it is approached, but some people have cornered it and forced it to fight, but it didn't go well."
"So we can't battle or chase it." Danny sighed. "This feels like it could be quite tough."
"You said it boss," Dave said, "Suicune apparently never stays in the same location for more than a day, it spends its life running around Johto."
"But it does have some favoured locations." Simon said.
"It's been seen most often in Cianwood City, outside Mt. Mortar, Vermillion City Harbour, Route 14 and at the end of Route 25." Kirstie said, pointing out the locations on a map of Johto and Kanto.
"They're all right next to water so it could easily just run away to where we can't reach it." Danny searched for some kind of positive. "Well I guess we could camp out at the most convenient location and wait until it shows up. Then we put into place some way to get it into the armoured truck."
"Sounds easy when you put it like that," Jeff said, "But it's not like Suicune will just walk in. If we can't battle it because it's too strong, we need to trap it."
"But it's too fast to trap it with a Pokémon. We'd have to hide a self-working trap perfectly."
"Maybe it's fast normally, but what if we used moves to slow it down? Ampharos' Thunder Wave should do the trick." Danny said.
"That could work if we can keep it around for long enough to use a move on it. Apparently, it just runs whenever somebody gets close to it." said Jeff.
"Then we use moves such as Quick Attack to get to it, slow it down temporarily and then use Thunder Wave." Danny said triumphantly as the others nodded in agreement.
"Could definitely work," Jeff said. Soon, the discussion ended and the team went to bed. It seemed like through a hard day's work, they had solved the impossible task.
