Painful Return
Rin's POV
I cracked my eyes open to see a white ceiling overhead. "Where . . . am I . . ." I wondered aloud.
"Ah, Miss Rin!" I turned my drowsy head to see a nurse reading something over on her clipboard,
"Wh . . . where am i?"
"You're in your home, Miss." She smiled a she approached me before taking out her thermometer, "May I check your temperature?" I opened my mouth and she placed the instrument in for a moment before removing it. "Hm . . . Thank you, Miss." She then turned and left the room and I looked around, my eyes burning from my virus. I'm home? . . . Then that means that terrible nightmare was reality after all . . . I closed my eyes and a tear escaped them. I'm no longer a student of Vocaloid High . . . The door opened and in walked Doctor Kyle and nurse.
"Good afternoon, Miss Rin." The doctor smiled, "It's so good to see you again."
"Doctor . . . Kyle . . ."
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm sick." I replied, my voice cracking.
"Don't worry; we prescribed you medication that will make you better in no time."
"Well that's reassuring." I said dryly,
"Hey, respect the doctor." Father snapped as he came into the room.
"Mr. Kagamine, please." The doctor urged gently. I looked down sadly. It's over . . . The physicians smiled at me, "Feel better soon, Rin. We'll be back to check on how you're doing."
"You're too kind." I retorted wryly. They bowed before leaving but when they did, Father whirled around at me.
"What was that attitude about?"
"It's nothing." I said turning my back to him but he turned me to over,
"Clearly it wasn't, young lady. That man is doing all he can to make sure you survive your cancer! And this illness!"
"But that man can't mend my broken heart, Father." I narrowed my eyes. "Nothing can . . ."
"I will not have this kind of behavior, young lady! Be thankful for everything we're doing for you!" With that he slammed the door and I burst into silent tears.
A few days passed and I finally was over my illness. I was sitting in my bed, trying to refrain from thinking about my time in Vocaloid High to ease the pain. Eventually, I had persuaded myself it was all just a dream. A sweet, utterly blissful dream that I was dragged out of. Since I had done so I now saw a complete stranger in the mirror when I looked at my reflection. My blue eyes were dark and hollow and the smile was completely gone. My thoughts were interrupted when Father came into my room. "Good morning, Rin. How are you feeling?"
"I am feeling well, Father." I answered with a monotone, almost robotic voice.
"I'm glad." He smiled actually, "Now I have laid out your uniform, best get ready so we can be on our way." I nodded once,
"Yes, Father." He stood and left and I got out of bed and stared down at my uniform on my dresser.
I got dressed and brushed my blonde shoulder-length hair. My school uniform wasn't anything special: just a navy blue skirt and long-sleeved navy sailor fuku which had thing white strips, it also consisted of navy blue knee-high stockings and black shoes which we waiting just outside my apartment door. My hair was just as plain Jane, no fancy accessories, but two white hairclips to hold my bangs in place above my left eye. I stared at the stranger in the mirror before walking down to the kitchen. I ate my breakfast which was already set out for me and left the house with Father. We passed a cluster of apartments when I remembered something. "Father, we should wait to pick up Kimi." My voice was still very monotone and it would not change for a long time to come.
"Kimi?" He asked looking at me in his mirror.
"Yes, it would be a good idea to drive her too. Since I am not walking today I think it would be considerate to drive her as well." He answered me with silence and I absently grabbed a hold of the door handle and opened it, leaning forward out of the fast-moving car. "Rin!" Father screamed and I landed on my hands and knees on the sidewalk, "Rin!" He ran over and helped me up, "Are you ok? What were you thinking!"
"I am fine; Father, but I am going to wait for Kimi . . ." I looked around, "Where is she? She's normally here at this time. . . I do hope she is not sick. . ." I was once again greeted with silence for a time. "Come, she's probably already at school, Rin." He placed me back into my seat, buckled me in, and commenced our drive.
The car pulled up to the front of the school and I stepped out, holding my black schoolbag in front of me. Around me, people were murmuring already.
"Hey, is that Rin Kagamine?"
"Yeah, it is!"
"Where's she been this whole time? I thought she dropped out."
"Idiot, didn't you hear? She got accepted into Vocaloid High!"
"Vocaloid High? Wait you mean?"
"Uh, yeah what else would I be referring to, baka?"
"But what's wrong with her? Her don't have the sparkle they use to have. They look utterly lifeless."
"Wonder what happened."
I continued to walk, slowly, as if rocks were weighing me down. The bell rang and it was time for everyone to report to their classrooms.
I walked into the room and the teacher, Mr. Suzumira, looked up with surprise, "Rin! What are you doing here?" I approached him and bowed,
"Good morning, Mr. Suzumira." I walked to my seat in the back of the room and everyone stared at me in shock as a few muttered to each other.
"Alright everyone, settle down so I can take attendance. Akiba Sora."
"Here." And so on and so on it went.
"Rin Kagamine." I paused for a moment, my hair hiding my face.
"Here." A tear trickled down my face and landed on my desk.
Aw poor Rin! D,:} I'm such a mean author but I promise it gets better! One must get through the rain to witness the rainbow after all! Please review! Time for another chapter!
