8: Aftermath
"Ssshhhh, he's waking up." Yusei felt so tired, but he was beginning to come back to the land of the living. Hearing voices around him, his grunted slightly in pain and struggled to open his eyes.
"Mr Fudo, can you hear me? I need you to open your eyes." A voice said to him,he could tell that it was a woman, but he had no clue to who it was. So with all the strength that he had, he managed to open his two eyes, but since one was robotic, it showed everything in a reddened version.
"There we go, how are you feeling?" He looked to his side and saw Miss Fontaine checking his heart rate, easy to do when your attached to a heart monitor.
"Good to see you're awake," he turned his head again to see Seto standing to the side of the room, but he wasn't the only one in the room. Both Jack and Crow were by his side, he also saw Jesse and Miss Fontaine on the other side. He tried to say something, but it just came out as a gasp of pain and thirst, sensing this, Miss Fontaine placed a glass at his lips and tilted it upwards, allowing the water inside it to run down Yusei's throat. When there was nothing left, she placed the glass back down on the mounted table that was for Yusei's bed.
"Alright Yusei, I need to check for any injuries, so please try and relax." As she tried to pull back his bed sheet, Yusei gripped it tightly in his right hand, preventing it from being pulled down.
"Come on Yusei, she's gotta check you." Crow said, trying to help pull down the bed sheet, but just like before, Yusei refused to let it be removed to show his body. Jack even tried to help move the bed sheet, but surprisingly Yusei still managed to keep a tight grip on it.
"Come on Yusei, we're just trying to see if you're alright," Jack said, but it seemed to trigger something inside Yusei's head, and it wasn't a good thing.
"No, I'm not alright!" He yelled, causing everyone to release the bed sheet as he gripped it tighter in his powerful hand. "You don't know what it was like. To spend every second of your time being deformed, forced to be something else, for five months I was put through hell, and it doesn't change now that I'm out of that place!"
Everyone in the room froze at the out burst, Seto was even shocked at the outburst but he had managed to regain his composure.
"Calm down Yusei, your injuries need to be looked at," Miss Fontaine explained, but it only made things worse.
"Injuries, injuries, I've more than a few bloody injuries." Seto finally had enough and stepped in to stop everything. Since Yusei was so busy with the three people in front of him, Seto signalled to Jesse to help out, and before Yusei knew it, his right arm was pinned to his side and the other one being held tightly to prevent any attacks.
"No, no, not again," the restraining seemed to trigger hidden fear in Yusei, but needed to be done so his condition could be checked. No one understood why Yusei was acting the way he was, but the two adults figured that it had to do with the time he spent in the abandoned dorm.
"Yusei, please stay calm, at least for Martha," Seto said and Yusei froze. Martha, the person he has seen as his mother his whole life, and of course she would be worried sick about his health, so she would want him to stop making a fuss. With little left to do, he stopped his struggling so Miss Fontaine could check over his body.
As the examination went on, everyone in the room could see the pain that Yusei was in. In all the areas that flesh and bone meet robotics, the areas were swollen very badly and some even had infections, thankfully his eye didn't seem to be infected, but it was still swollen. So Miss Fontaine began on treating the infections that Yusei did have, but it was still painful for him to endure.
Back at Neo Domino, Martha was at her home in the orphanage, were she raised every child as her own, but none so more than her three eldest. She had spent many months crying and praying for her son Yusei's safe return, and so far she hadn't had any news of his return. Many others would have given up hope by now, but she refused to give up hope in the chance of seeing Yusei once again.
Then the phone rang, breaking the woman's concentration. She stopped doing what she was doing and went to answer the phone.
"Hello, Neo Domino orphanage, Martha speaking, how can I help?" She asked, and was answered by a very deep voice.
"Hello Martha. My name is Atem Sennen, I'm the head of the dorm your three sons are in."
"Hello Mr Sennen, what do I owe the pleasure of your call?"
"Well, there are two reasons to why I'm calling today. Firstly, I would like to inform you that both Jack and Crow have passed their exams with flying colours."
"That's great news, they may not be the most disciplined, but they do have smarts."
"Very true, and they proved everyone wrong. Secondly I have someone here who wants to speak to you."
"Well put them on please." Martha heard the pass over of the phone on the other end, "Hello?"
"Hey mom," the voice may have been weak, but she could tell who that voice belonged to from miles away.
"Yusei, is that really you?" She asked, wishing that her prayers had been answered.
"Yeah it's me mom, I'm so glad to hear your voice." She could hear Yusei crying on the other end of the line, looks like she isn't the only one that is happy about this reunion.
"That's okay Yusei, just cry all you want." And so she continued to listen to her son crying, they may not have been blood related, but he was still considered her son. It was painful for her to hear her youngest son crying like this, she can't remember a time when he ever cried like this, but she didn't stop him until he felt ready.
"It was horrible," he said, almost breaking down again.
"It's okay honey, I'll visit as soon as I can Yusei," her soothing words didn't seem to calm Yusei.
"Please come quick, I just feel so lonely."
"But your not alone Yusei, you have your brothers, you have your friends, and I'm sure that Mr Sennen and Mr Kaiba would help you out."
"Thanks mom, I got to go, Mr Sennen wants his phone back," she laughed a little at her sons comment, not matter what condition he was in, he always seemed to make someone laugh. She could here the hand over of the phone, but she also heard Atem moving out of the room, probably to have a private talk.
"Martha, are you still there?" She was brought out of her daze.
"Yes I am, Mr Sennen, please don't lie to me, what happened to my son?" She heard Atem sigh over the line before Atem spoke.
"Your son went through something that no human being should have gone through, he is not human any more Martha." That one statement made her blood run cold, what does he mean by not human?
"What do you mean by that Mr Sennen?"
"What I mean Martha is that your son is now part human and part machine," Atem explained, and finally realisation set in for Martha.
"I'll be on the earliest boat to Island tomorrow, good day Mr Sennen."
"Good day Martha." they both hung up and Martha quickly began packing her bag to head off to duel academy, not waiting to prolong her visit to Yusei any more.
After Atem had hung up his phone, Jack, Crow and Jesse all exited the hospital wing to head back to their dorm, biding their goodbyes to Atem before he entered the room, and stopping in the door way. In the room, he could see that Yusei was clinging to Seto like he was a life jacket, and Seto was hugging him, as you would see a father and son would do.
"You going to stand there like a fish out of water all day?" Atem eyes snapped shut and then opened again, he could see Seto looking at him with Yusei still clinging to him life a life line. Atem finally walked next to the two people, with small smile on his lips.
"You look like a dad," he got a glare from Seto, but he wasn't fazed.
"Very funny, he needs comfort and I'm providing it, so do me a favour and stop being a smart ass." Seto responded, which in turn made Yusei laugh a little, much to the relief of Seto.
"You two sound like my brothers," Yusei said, earning some curious glances from the two grown men.
"And why is that Yusei?" Atem asked as he took one of the seats next to the bed Yusei was occupying, and holding on to Kaiba like a life line.
"They always act like this, whenever I feel down, they have these childish arguments and they just make me laugh, so you reminded me of them." Now that he explained everything, it did seem to make sense.
"You have a point, I mean we go back to our childhood, we would always bicker about just about everything." Atem said, but Seto decided to have some fun.
"You mean like the mutt."
"Oh for the love of god Seto, Joey is not a mutt."
"Could of fooled me."
"Knock it off chestnut head."
"Starfish head," Seto retorted which surprisingly led to a small fist fight, which turned in to a scuffle where the loser says uncle. Yusei couldn't believe the sight in front of him, Seto had Atem's arm pinned behind his back and his other arm wrapped around his neck, screaming for Atem to say uncle. Yusei ended up in a fit of laughter, then the door opened to reveal Mokuba, Jaden, Zane, Alexis and Atticus. All of them with wide eyes on their faces.
"Seto are you sick or something?" Mokuba asked, and he got a quick response.
"I'm fine, say uncle damn it," the three teens with Mokuba turned their heads to where they could hear laughter, and saw Yusei holding his sides, getting a stitch from his laughing fit.
"See how you like it rich boy," everyone turned back to the adults, where Atem was now holding Seto in a head lock and pulling at his hair. Instead of breaking up the fight, the four teens and young adult sat down to watch, all of them laughing at the scene. In the end, Seto won by putting Atem in a full nelson, finally getting Atem to say uncle.
"That has to be the funniest thing I have ever seen," Yusei said, with 5 other people agreeing with him.
"Well he started it," Atem said as he pointed at Seto, who in turn had a smirk on his face.
"And I ended it as well Atem, but enough of that, why are you five here?" Gesturing to the group of people that walked in half way though their scuffle.
"Well, Mr Sennen needs to go to a meeting with the teachers, you Seto have a board meeting in under two hours, and these four came to see how Yusei was doing." Mokuba explained, as he listed all the different things off his fingers. In no time at all, the two adults were out of the room, although they exited very calmly, which in other cases people would run like mad to get out. When they did leave however, Yusei seemed to be depressed, he actually enjoyed being around Seto like a son would be with a father, but then again he doesn't know what it's like to have a father.
"You okay?" He looked up to see his friends looking at him with concern.
"Don't worry about it," he replied as he lied back down on his bed, but Zane and Alexis could see right past his act.
"We will worry about it, now what's up, it will help you if you talk," Alexis suggested, soon followed by Zane.
"She's right, it helped me when I was going through some tough times." Yusei sighed before giving in to those around him.
"Well, I guess I just like it when Mr Kaiba around."
"Really, not many people do," Atticus replied, and getting an elbow in his ribs from his sister.
"I know, but, he just makes he feel happy. He's had searches going on to find me the whole time I was missing, not many search parties last that long." No one seemed convinced that he was saying everything, so he went on.
"Plus, he's like the father I never had." When he finished, the others just starred at him, while Yusei himself pulled the covers of his bed up to his chin and turned on to his side, curling up to make himself look smaller.
"There's nothing wrong with that," he turned his head with four other people to stare at Zane, who wasn't fazed by the stares.
"What do you mean by that Zane?" Jaden asked the much taller boy in the room.
"What I mean is that there is nothing wrong with Yusei saying that Kaiba is like a father to him, everyone needs a father figure in their life, and for Yusei, it is Kaiba." The eldest explained, and Yusei seemed relieved that at least someone understood him.
Seto was in his office that was in the main school building doing some work, or at least trying to get some work done. His mind had continued to wonder to the injured teen that was in the medical bay of the school. Though he and Serenity had no children, they had always loved the idea of having some, and those thoughts were starting to surface again in his head.
He had read the three files to the newest students to his school, all three boys were orphaned when they were very young and were still living at the orphanage that they were raised in. It was a sad story behind all three of these talented youths but they didn't let their past affect them in anyway, and that is what Seto liked about them, it reminded him of what he was like when he was growing up.
With one last thought of the three boys, Seto went back to work to hopefully get done before the meeting that he was scheduled to have in just over an hour.
Yusei: It would be nice to have a dad
