Katniss
Following the trail was easy. Apparently the careers weren't being very careful about making sure Percy was unharmed. Percy's body had been dragged over the lumpy forest ground, and over protruding tree roots that stuck out from the bed of dead tree leaves.
"We are heading straight for the Cornucopia." Thalia pointed out after some time.
"Maybe that's their base." Katniss shrugged. "In the past games, the career tributes always had their hideout there. It's where all the goodies are."
Katniss, Peeta, Thalia, and Nico walked all afternoon, keeping up a steady pace. They only stopped once by a small stream to get a quick drink.
Katniss glanced at the remaining two demigods. Though Thalia and Nico refused to show it, she could tell that one part of them were missing. That part had disappeared along with Percy.
"You knew each other long?" Katniss asked, referring to Percy.
Thalia glared at Katniss for bringing up the subject. But the glare was soon erased, replaced by a glazed look, as though recalling the past.
"Yes." Thalia finally answered. "About four years. He's our cousin."
"Cousin?!" Katniss said sharply. This news shocked her. All three demigods were related? That couldn't be possible. They looked nothing alike, other than the fact that they had the same black colored hair. But the similarities stopped there. Even their eye colors were different. Percy's was sea green, Thalia's was a light shade of electric blue, and Nico's was pitch black.
But Nico nodded in confirmation. "All demigods are related some way or another, by our godly parents. Thalia is a daughter of Zeus, and I'm a son of Hades. Both of which are Poseidon's brothers. That, technically, makes us cousins."
Katniss realized that this was the first time Nico and Thalia had introduced their godly parents. She wondered why she had never asked them earlier. An old memory from her school back in District twelve swam in her head. She remembered her teacher telling her about the Greek gods; about the major and minor gods, and those who were said to hold a throne on Olympus.
Now from what she recalled, she noticed that the demigods sent to protect herself and Peeta were actually the children of the eldest gods. Together, the 'Big Three' demigods were here, in this very arena. Their powers combined would be destructive. Katniss was thankful that they were helping her.
"It's getting dark. We should stop to make sure we don't stray away from the trail." Thalia announced.
"Hold it." Katniss said. "You mean we should just stay here, out in the open, until morning? What if the careers and Percy catch us?"
"I can make the shadows shield us from sight. Hopefully, it will give us a moment's warning if they do spot us." Nico shrugged.
Peeta raised his eyebrows. "Are you saying that you can turn us invisible?"
"Nope." Nico shook his head. "It would only make it harder for anyone to spot us in the dark. And it also acts as a burglar alarm for me if anyone is too close."
"But you have to know this." Thalia added. "If Percy and the careers are intent on finding us, nothing will stop them. We will meet eventually. The darkness will prevent us from getting caught by surprise."
Katniss nodded. Everything Thalia said was true. Nothing can stop the careers from finding them. In the end, all the careers had to die if Katniss and Peeta were to make it out.
So four of them sat, leaning against the thick trunk of an oak tree. Nico concentrated for a while, pulling in the shadows to conceal them, before dozing off to sleep.
Before sleeping, Katniss recapped the remaining tributes left in the arena. There was Marvel, Cato, Clove, a girl from four, Percy, Foxface, Thresh, Rue, Peeta and herself, and the two demigods.
Then sleep overtook Katniss's senses, and she let herself slip away from reality.
Just a couple of hours later, Katniss woke up to Nico's violent jolt. It was dark, probably midnight. The only difference was that the peacefulness of the night had been removed, replaced by a loud clanging made by metal hitting against metal.
Adrenaline shot through her body, and suddenly Katniss was wide awake.
She tried to piece the puzzles together and figure out what could have happened. It didn't take a lot of processing to understand the situation.
A dull thud came from her left, and she spun around. The four careers stood in an arc behind Percy. Nico was panting, a black sword in his hand. Percy's sword Riptide, lay on the floor. Nico had just managed to disarm him.
"Not fair. You only got me by surprise!" Percy shouted. There was real anger thrown into his words.
"Listen, Percy. Why are you fighting us? We are your friends, remember?" Nico asked.
Percy's voice was cold when he replied. "You're no more than betrayers!"
Behind Percy, Katniss could see the careers smirking.
Katniss wanted to hurt and kill every career at that very moment. But she knew she couldn't. Now that Percy thought the careers were his real friends, killing them would only make things worse.
Thalia took a step closer to Percy. Hidden behind her back, was a silver knife, just in case Percy attacked her.
"What did we do to betray you?" Thalia said. "Did you even see us doing anything?"
Percy did a quick glance back at the careers, who rearranged their faces to a comforting smile.
"They told me you and Nico wanted to play me out. You set up the trap to make my death look like an accident. You are the reason I lost my memories!" Percy hurled the words at her while glaring at Nico.
Thalia held Percy's gaze. "Who are 'they'? How can you trust someone if you have your memories wiped?"
Percy was silent for a moment, but his eyes still blazed with hatred. His swirling sea green eyes was of a darker, more dangerous shade, which made Katniss feel like running in the opposite direction.
"The careers are my friends. They nursed me back to health after what you did." Percy spat.
"No, Percy. They were the ones who erased your memories, and made you think they are your friends. They brainwashed you so that you thought we were your enemies." Nico explained.
Percy frowned, as though all the information was giving him a headache.
But the expression cleared the next second. "No need to give excuses. I have heard enough about you two. I will get my revenge tonight!"
Riptide was in Percy's hand again. Yet Katniss didn't see Percy pick it up from the floor in the first place. Thalia, however, was ready for Percy's blow.
In a blur of silver, Thalia brought out her knife from behind her back, and blocked Percy's blow. The ensuing battle was so fast that Katniss could not differentiate whose hand belonged to who. Sparks flew where the metal blades clashed into each other. Nico jumped into the fight to help Thalia, and the three of them fought with such skill and ferocity that Katniss had never seen before. Percy was attacking with swift, well-practiced strokes that would have vaporized anyone instantly if they were not demigods. Thalia and Nico were mainly playing defense, occasionally attacking when they had the chance.
The careers stood in the same position and watched the swordfight. Awe was etched in every career face as it was the first time they saw Percy fight. But none of them dared to join in the fight. Not even Cato, who usually wanted to show off that he was better than everybody else.
Percy lunged at Nico, who didn't manage to jump out of the way in time. Riptide grazed the side of Nico's hip, giving him a good sized cut. Nico grimaced in surprise and pressed one hand on the wound. Fresh blood seeped in between his fingers.
Thalia took the opportunity of Percy's momentarily outstretched arm to slash hard and his sword arm. Her knife made a long, red line from Percy's upper arm to his elbow. Percy shouted in pain, and his sword arm went slack. Thalia used the flat of her knife to hit Riptide out of Percy's grip.
But Percy wasn't concentrating. The moment he saw that he had injured Nico, something distracted him. Hurting one of his friends seemed to wake him up. Katniss couldn't figure out what Percy was thinking. But something seemed to stir in Percy's mind. For a moment, Percy looked like he had returned to normal. However, that look didn't last.
The careers must have seen it too. They cast a worried glance at each other, before looking back at the demigods.
"Percy? Are you alright? He is your enemy. You wanted him dead, remember? Kill him!" Cato yelled.
Thalia cut in, "Think about it, Percy. What friend would stand and watch you fight alone? They are trying to turn you against us. We have always been friends from the start. Don't be fooled by their lies. You have to decide for yourself who the real enemy is. For once, Kelp Head, try to reason it out yourself!"
Percy looked confused, as though deciding between two evils.
"I- I…." Percy stuttered, looking back and forth from Thalia and Nico, to the career tributes, who wasn't smiling now.
"Don't listen to them, Percy. We will do anything for you, remember?" Clove said. She didn't sound very confident.
Percy bent down slowly and picked up his sword on the floor. But he didn't start attacking again like before. Instead, he gripped the blade with two hands and pointed the tip of his sword at himself.
"Percy?" Thalia called. "What are you doing?"
Percy gave a small smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"Well, if I have no memories, and I can't even tell apart who really is my friend, there is no point living, is there? If I die, it will solve all the problem. I wouldn't have to kill anyone, and I won't put whoever are my real friends in danger." Percy said quietly.
The tip of Percy's sword was resting against his abdomen. Ready to penetrate the flesh and destroy the life of its owner.
There was stunned silence at Percy's words. For a moment, nobody reacted.
"I'm sorry…" Percy trailed, lifting up the point of his sword, ready to stab himself.
"NO!" Thalia yelled, as Percy plunged the sword downwards.
Thalia gripped the Riptide's hilt and pulled it back, trying to slow down the momentum. But Percy himself stopped resisting, and Thalia yanked the sword away.
"What were you thinking, Kelp Head!" Thalia shouted.
This time, Percy gave his usual lopsided smile like he'd finally solved a puzzle.
"Just a test to find out who's saying the truth. Now I know who caused all this." Percy said slowly, turning to look at the careers.
The moment the careers understood what had happened, they fled, sprinting as fast as they could into the woods.
Then, Katniss heard rumbling sounds coming towards them in the direction of the Cornucopia. She, Peeta, and the three demigods turned, eyes searching for the source of the rumbling.
It didn't take long before they found out that they were staring into the face- or faces- of a nine headed monster. The middle head started breathing fire, scorching the tree trunks, which caught fire again.
"Hydra!" Nico yelled. "Run!"
They sprinted, backing deeper into the forest. From the corner of her eyes, Katniss could see two other figures running. She focused, and realized that they were actually Thresh and Rue, running for their lives too.
Please...I cant stress this enough. Please review. I need to know how you guys find my story, and whether it is even worth reading. Thanks!
