I'm kinda tired of saying 'Aaaand here's the next chapter', but since I dont know how else to start off, I'll say that. So, heres the next chapter guys! Thanks for the load of reviews from the last chapter, it was quite a surprise for me.
To hungergamesfangirl100: He'd be back really soon if he makes it out. I can feel the story is coming to an end. But as to how it will end, I'm not so sure.
To Kontonio: Eeeek I'm scared. LOL, I'll see what I can do :)
To Zia Rashid: My other story is on hiatus because of the coming exams this month. I'll continue it in September, thats my holidays! And another reason is because multi-writing stories is confusing. It's like making Katniss a witch, and making Ron a baker's son. It's just strange, and I'll lose track of things. I know there are authors who can write 7 plus stories at the same time. Congratulations to them. It's no easy feat.
To ritzdestinfangirl307: Well, thanks! But not really. I'm just borrowing the awesome storyline from Rick Riordan and Suzanne Collins. I could never have written this if it werent for them.
To Guest (There were two guests who reviewed, so I'll put both my replies here): Hi five! Singaporean pride :) Thanks! I'll see what I can do about Percy. I dont want him dead either!
Thanks for the other compliments and those who reviewed. Now, enjoy :)
Katniss
Watching the demigods getting extracted from the arena made her feel unprotected. After seeing Percy, Thalia, and Nico fight the monsters and tributes in the arena, she had no doubts that she would make it out of the arena alive.
But now, they had to leave, right into the hands of the Capitol, who would definitely want to kill them straight away. The Capitol would probably make some sort of cover story to show the districts the cost of defying the Capitol.
Katniss recalled what Percy's last words were. Automatically, she made a virtual list of what she had to do. It went something like this:
Step 1. Kill the last career – Cato
Step 2. Pretend to eat the berries with Peeta, so that the gamemakers were forced to let both of them out as victors.
Step 3. Somehow, get the message that she was out of the arena to Percy, so that he could make his public announcement across all of Panem.
Just these three steps. And they had to be completed in this order. Percy, Thalia, and Nico's life depended on it.
The demigods had protected her this far, and she could even see herself coming out of this games alive. Now it was her turn to save them. The least she could do was to follow Percy's instructions, and hopefully, get them out of the clutches of the Capitol.
Peeta was looking at her, waiting for her to make the first move.
"Cato will come to us. He knows the demigods can't help us now." Katniss said confidently. "All we have to do, is to be prepared when he attacks."
Peeta shrugged. His eyes scanned the area around the Cornucopia.
Sure enough, just as Katniss predicted, Cato came running at them from the forest. In his hand, was a heavy looking metal sword.
Katniss notched her arrow, took aim, and fired at Cato's chest.
Her aim was true. It hit the running figure squarely in the chest, but it merely bounced off, leaving Cato unharmed.
She could see Cato's smirk from many meters away. Squinting, Katniss realized that Cato was wearing a body armor. No arrow could penetrate that armor.
Cato had reached the base of the Cornucopia, and was panting hard.
He did a wild throw with his sword, which flew upwards at them. Katniss dove to one side, her bow sliding out of her grip.
Unfortunately, Peeta wasn't so lucky. Cato's sword gave him a deep gash on his right shin, and blood poured out of his leg immediately.
Peeta gasped in pain, clutching at his wounded leg. The blood loss was making his face pale. Katniss knew that if he didn't get any good medical treatment soon, he would collapse from the lack of oxygen to his head.
Meanwhile, as Katniss's attention was momentarily focused on Peeta's bloodied leg, Cato made his climb on the Cornucopia. Only when Cato had reached the top of the Cornucopia, did Katniss realize that she was unprotected, weaponless, and vulnerable.
By then, it was too late. Cato didn't bother to pick up his sword, which was lying a few paces away. Instead, he grabbed Katniss from behind, and put his arm around her neck, pressing her windpipe. Air was cut off from her lungs, and she tried to thrash around in attempt to loosen Cato's grip.
Her head felt light. The lack of oxygen made her vision blurry, and yellow spots danced around in her eyes.
Helplessly, Katniss stop struggling. A blur shadow in which Katniss assumed was Peeta, got up from the ground. He aimed a punch at the side of Cato's face, and she heard a sickening crunch, as his skull cracked.
Cato released her, and she fell to the ground weakly. Peeta raised his fist, and punched him again on the head, the only unprotected exposed part.
Cato fell off the Cornucopia, landing on the grassy floor at the bottom of the Cornucopia.
Katniss snatched up her bow, and took aim. Going for his head, she fired her last arrow. The moment it made contact, a resounding boom of the cannon was heard.
Step 1, to kill Cato, was complete.
Her next item on the list, was to get Peeta and herself out of the arena quickly.
Peeta was lying on the Cornucopia, a pool of blood surrounding his leg. His face was terribly pale, and his eyes where half closed.
Katniss scooped the Nightlock berries out of her pouch. She brought a handful of berries and hurried to where Peeta was lying.
"Katniss…you have to win. Remember what Percy said. You are the spark." Peeta said faintly.
Katniss kneeled down beside Peeta. "No, he wanted you to win too. He wanted both of us to win. I…I need you to win with me."
Peeta looked at her directly in her eyes.
"Only one can be crowned victor. That's got to be you." Peeta said.
"Not if we make them change the rules. Trust me." Katniss whispered.
She cupped Peeta's hand and steadied it. Katniss poured half the berries into his hand.
"Okay. On three?" He asked, he seemed to understand what her plan was.
Katniss nodded. "On three, then."
She shifted herself, so that the cameras could see exactly what they were about to do.
"Three..." Peeta started. Holding up the berries.
"…two..." Katniss continued. They lifted the berries to their mouth slowly.
But before they could even get to 'one', the speakers blared. It was Seneca Crane, the head gamemaker.
"STOP! STOP! I present to you the victors of the Seventy-fourth Annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark!"
Katniss dropped the berries in relief. Though she knew this was going to happen, she was still worried about what would happen if the gamemakers allowed them to eat the poisonous berries.
A hovercraft appeared in the sky, lowering a ladder down to get them.
"We won. We can go home." Peeta said.
As Katniss was frozen on the ladder, her mind checked off another item on her mental list.
Step 2, to come out of the arena as victors, was complete.
The final step was the hardest. She had no idea where Percy, or any of the other demigods where held. She didn't even know if he was alive. Could the Capitol have killed them as soon as they left the arena?
That wasn't likely. The districts would want a reason if the gamemaker have killed them. They would want to know the reason behind the killing.
Hands pulled Katniss into the hovercraft. A group of medics took Peeta away with a stretcher, leaving Katniss on the floor of the hovercraft.
"Peeta!" Katniss shouted. Was the Capitol going to punish her for defying the rules of the Hunger Games?
"Peeta!" She called again. There was no reply. No one took notice of her.
"Here, drink this." A young girl said, holding a glass of clear liquid.
Katniss was thirsty, so she drank it in one gulp. It tasted sweet, like the fine food they had in the Capitol. Her head stopped pounding, and she drifted off in a peaceful, dreamless, sleep.
She was lying on a soft, white bed. Warm, white sheets were tucked over her. She looked around, and her eyes landed on Cinna, her stylist. Cinna was sitting on a chair by her bed.
"What's going on?" Katniss asked.
Cinna watched her for a while, before replying, "You and Peeta won. Your crowning ceremony is in the evening, right after the trial."
Trial? What was Cinna talking about? Katniss's mind was still drowsy. Processing information took some time.
"What trial?" Katniss questioned.
A sad look crossed Cinna's face. "Percy's trial. President Snow is determined to be rid of him. He made up a story that Percy cheated in the arena, and wants Percy to confess to his actions. After which, he is scheduled to be hung, as a warning to all those who defy the Capitol."
"No! But Percy didn't do anything. He won't confess." Katniss said surely.
Cinna leant closer to her. "He will. The president forced him to. If he doesn't confess, Thalia and Nico will die."
Katniss felt anger surge through her veins. "That's not fair. The Capitol can't…"
But Cinna cut her in mid-sentence. "They can. The President has a powerful position. Anyone who oppose will find themselves in a similar situation as Percy. And they don't have to be fair either. It is a show trial, Katniss. It is just to show the districts the consequences of defying the Capitol."
Katniss didn't know what to think. Deep down, she knew what Cinna said was true. The Capitol will want to show the districts that they are in control.
But she couldn't just let Percy die. Not after everything he'd done for her. Remembering what she thought about Percy at the start of the games, she felt the irony. At first, she had thought that Percy was trying to play her up, and that he was a two faced guy. Now, she realized that he was actually and sincerely trying to help her all along. She had wronged him, from the very start.
In his attempts to protect her, Percy, along with Thalia and Nico, had revealed their demigod powers, which alerted the Capitol. Now, the Capitol was after them. And because of her, Percy's life was on the line.
Katniss had to do something. Time was ticking. With every passing minute, Percy was one step closer to his end. She only had one chance that may possibly change Percy's fate. But she needed someone she could trust, to pass the message that she was alive, to Percy.
If there was anyone from the Capitol that she could trust, he was sitting right beside her now. Cinna had always acted differently, unlike the other Capitol citizens.
So Katniss took her chances.
"Cinna, I need you to do me a big favour." Katniss said quickly.
Cinna looked up. "Name it. I'll do what I can."
Katniss took a deep breath. She decided not to tell Cinna the whole story about Percy's background. She didn't have the time.
"Do you know where Percy is being held?" Katniss asked hopefully.
"Yes…" Cinna said slowly. "But you must know it is impossible for me to help him escape. The security around him is very high."
Katniss sighed in relief. At least Cinna knew where Percy was. That was one step in the right direction. Surely, Percy could do the escaping himself, somehow.
"Right. I understand. Just pass the message to him, saying that Peeta and I are out of the arena. That's all." Katniss said simply.
Cinna looked puzzled by her request, but he nodded. "I'll tell him that."
"Thank you."
Well, at least something good happened this time. I think you all can tell that the end of the story is really near! Pls review!
