Hi guys, sorry it's taken me so long to update, I've had exams recently so have been busy with them but here is the next chapter. Hope you all like it!
Chapter thirty-six: Castor's POV
I sighed, resting my head in my hands, unsure of how many hours I had been inside this cell, all I knew was that my breathing continued to be ragged as I pushed my glasses back up on my nose, wiped away the sweat from my forehead and pulled the shirt of my robes away from my chest as I continued to sweat. Sick rose from the pit of my churning stomach but I forced it back down, my lips dry, waiting endlessly for whatever was going to happen to me.
A slow creaking noise signaled that someone had arrived, forcing myself to look at the newcomer I gulped, Tonks and Kingsley stood before me, both looking at me with looks of shame and disgust, Tonks' glare was so fierce it burned.
"Out of all the people in this world Castor, I really thought you'd be the last to join them and their false promises. I really thought you were different… not just another Death Eater child whose fate was already decided. I thought… after we all tried so hard… after m-my father tried so hard," Tonks stopped, looking at the ceiling to stop herself from crying.
"I promise you I didn't kill him, I would never. Just let me use veritaserum. I can prove it," I spluttered, all I needed was the truth serum and I could prove that I was innocent and that it was all a plot by the Death Eater's to frame me.
"That won't be necessary Mr. Lestrange," I growled at the use of my hated name, it was a voice I didn't really recognize but as I turned I recognized the man stood before me: Rufus Scrimgeour. The head of the auror department.
"You're looking at the new minister of magic, after the death of your uncle you didn't catch the news that Mr. Scrimgeour has been appointed to succeed Fudge," Kingsley said to me with a nod as I felt chills run down my spine, anything I'd heard about this man was that he was a ruthless man who unlike Fudge who tried to cover up Voldemort coming back, Scrimgeour did everything in his power to make sure it appeared that the ministry were on top of the problem. That meant throwing people, who if given a fair trial would be found innocent, in Azkaban. People like me.
"Please… please," I shuddered.
"Kingsley, Nymphadora," Tonks didn't even grimace at her name but merely did as she was told and followed Kingsley out of the room as Scrimgeour chuckled, circling around me, a smirk etched on his faces. "It's inevitable really Castor, the public want you imprisoned, ever since you were born it was the only way you would end up, a Death Eater in Azkaban or dead. Now it's happened, you are one of the most wanted people in Britain and the people won't be satisfied unless they know we, I am doing my job correctly and that they are now safe as you are locked up. I can almost hear their congratulations now," he laughed, "It won't be too bad Castor. You'll get used to spending your life in Azkaban."
I shivered, "You can't do this! You know don't you? You know that I'm telling the truth but you won't tell anyone else because you're evil! This isn't justice!" He cut me off with a click of his fingers and opened the door, calling to Kingsley and Tonks who were waiting down the hallway.
"The boy is practically insane, take him to court, let's get this nasty business over with," he leant in and pulled me close while he waited for Tonks and Kingsley to come. "It's just the law." I felt myself being picked up and pulled away from Rufus who shook his head before turning himself away from my screams.
"Just tell me, did he leave me anything… did Sirius leave me anything?" I gulped, asking Tonks as she scowled at me.
"Yeah… he left you one of the Black estates, some money and a few other more personal things," she said quickly, turning away so she didn't have to look at me. I didn't want to make her even more upset, even more uncomfortable so I kept my mouth shut and bit my lip, preparing to enter the court. My eyes widened as two large dark doors were pushed open and I found myself looking at a whole host of familiar faces, Colin, Luna, the whole Weasly family, Harry, Hermione, Dumbledore, Aunty Andy. I caught her eye and she looked away, biting her lip, I looked and saw Narcissa who was sat with Draco, the bags under Draco's eyes were large and he closed his eyes as I passed, I could tell that he knew the truth, that I was innocent but I didn't blame him for remaining silent, Narcissa couldn't look at me either as I was shoved into a chair, facing the Wizengamot, Dumbledore looked at me, clad in his plum colored robes as I shut my eyes, preparing for something that I simply couldn't prepared for. I pushed my glasses further up my face and pulled my robes away from my skin, stinking of sweat. Dumbledore nodded at me but I could see a clear sadness in his twinkling blue eyes, before he spoke, the whole court falling silent.
"Your name is Castor Black is it not?" It was the name I'd always known, not Lestrange so I nodded but Dumbledore cleared his throat and signaled that I would have to answer verbally to each question as I began to sweat more.
"Yes Sir."
"You are fifteen are you not?"
"Yes Sir."
"Were you present at the house where Edward Tonks was murdered on the night of his murder?"
I gulped, closing my eyes only to open them again, I looked at all the faces that stood before me. Fred and George lowered their gaze when I looked at them, Neville looked at me with an expression of shock and disbelief, I could tell he wanted to believe I was innocent but it was hard. Hard for all of them, Luna seemed to shudder and clutch her father's hand but she continued to look at me, just staring passively at me, no sign of emotion and that was what seemed to affect me the most and make me closer to breaking down in tears. "Y-Yes Sir." Shocked gasps ran out as I gripped the arms of the chair and steadied myself, innocent until proven guilty I whispered under my breath. If only I could use the truth serum but I knew it wouldn't happen, Scrimgeour wouldn't dare let it happen and for his great victory to be reduced to me being framed. To him, I couldn't be seen as the victim, not when my case was so high profile.
"YOU KILLED HIM!" Someone I didn't know screamed but I recognized the face, she'd worked with my Uncle Ted, I shivered, drawing into myself for the little good it would do me to shield myself from what they thought was well deserved abuse and tirades against me. The shouts and yells continued for a few minutes before Dumbledore, far more commanding than I was used to, called for order.
"Are you, in anyway a member or affiliated with the dark arts group known as the Death Eaters?" This one I could answer clearly.
"No Sir." Shouts of liar and clear disgust could be seen on people's faces as I bit my lip and forced myself not to respond, Dumbledore called for order again and coughed.
"At least his parents admitted to it!" Someone shouted and I felt my anger grow but I knew my emotions which always seemed to get me in trouble wouldn't and couldn't help me here.
"My wand cast the killing curse but it was my father who actually fired the spell I assure you. I was framed… I am not responsible for the murder of Edward Tonks," I mumbled, more shouts, echoing across the room, I couldn't say anything right, ever.
"I'm afraid he's lying Dumbledore, members of the Wizengamot, this boy is not innocent, he murdered Ted Tonks with no remorse at the orders of the man he pledges alliance to and calls his master, Voldemort," there were gasps throughout the courtroom, both at the use of Voldemort's name and the fact that it had been Rufus Scrimgeour who had spoken.
"Do you have any evidence to disprove this boy's statement Minister Scrimegeour?" Dumbledore smiled warmly but I could tell his question irked Scrimgeour who frowned, Dumbledore wanted a fair trial for me and I thanked him for that, even though it would all be easier if I could just use the truth serum.
"I do Dumbledore," he smirked and as I felt his cold hands touch my wrist I knew I was done for, as he lifted my sleeve, reveling in the fact that he had totally won and I no longer had a chance. He held up the dark mark festering on my arm for all to see as I fought back the tears.
"I swear! They forced the dark mark on me! I had no choice! I couldn't-," Scrimgeour cut me off with a cold harsh laugh, his hand still tightly gripping my wrist and holding it up.
"Lies, we know Voldemort only gives the dark mark to his most trusted followers, people who have given themselves worthy by skill to be among his ranks and loyal enough to be deemed one of his followers. No matter how much it might help a scheme of his, Voldemort would never give someone what he deems to be a honor when they were not loyal to him! It would ruin everything the Death Eaters and the mark stand for, making it seem like an embarrassment," well I was sorry to tell him that Voldemort had given it me for one of his schemes and that the Death Eater's didn't seem embarrassed.
A single, slow tear trickled from Dumbledore's eye, "I'm sorry my boy, that I couldn't save you from the dark. I tried but it wasn't enough, I didn't try hard enough to save you from your heritage, none of us did. I'm sorry Castor."
"No! Please! I didn't do it! Just give me the truth s-," Scrimgeour tightened his grip on my wrist and I shivered as he bent down to my ear.
"You can't beat me and I'll just make it worse for you if you try."
"Castor, I'm sorry this is how it had to be. I sentence you… I sentence you to life in Azkaban for the murder of Edward Tonks and the disfiguration of his body," Dumbledore sighed, an immediate buzz of chatter started up around the people watching but as soon as I felt the chains clip around my wrists, a little more tightly than I would have liked and I felt myself being dragged off silence ensued as everyone watched me, their eyes of disgust and disappointment boring into me, watched me go to hell.
"CASTOR! CAS!" I looked up at Luna's voice and immediately looked up, fighting to join her but the grip on me tightened and the pace I was being dragged at increased.
"I love you Luna! I love you and I promise I am innocent! I could never! I would never-," then she was gone, we'd turned a corner and they were all gone. Forever, they were all gone. I could see someone holding the tattered Azkaban prisoners uniform which would soon be on my own body and I closed my eyes, trying to take in my last moments inside somewhere other than a cell, my last moments of being sane even. I shivered, knowing that I would sooner than I would like, be insane. It was inevitable.
"Get changed quickly, the dementors… they'll like you. I'm sure you've got some interesting memories popping around in that head of yours," a guard chuckled but I couldn't retort, my mouth was dry because I knew he was right. I didn't have a chance. Insanity was coming.
Okay guys! Here's the next chapter, please if you get time review, it really helps me! And once again thanks for reading.
