Chapter 8: Tis The Season to be Jolly!

It's the 20th of December and Christmas is just around the corner. Jim and his mother have planned to hold a Christmas Dinner Party in their house, inviting all of Jim's friends over from the diner. Especially Scotty (who is super excited about it).

Entering the third trimester and hitting the 7 month mark is taking a toll on Jim. He's been getting slower, lazier and sleeps longer than usual, which results in him having bad headaches for sleeping in so much. Worse of all, the baby's weight has been putting pressure on his chest whenever he lays down, causing breath shortage. But he read about this in the baby and pregnancy books. All the symptoms are normal so he sucks it up as much as he can. But he is also lucky that he gets maternity leave from work.

"Dang it Jim we've only got 5 days until the Dinner Party and we haven't even gone Christmas shopping yet! We don't even have a Christmas tree!" Winona whined as she crossed her arms at Jim, who was laying on the couch trying to nap.

"Jim are you even listening?" She chuckled, shaking her head. All Jim did was burry his head into the couch pillow and mumbled random gibberish words like as if he was a 10 year old again.

"Ugh fine I'll go on my own then. You rest up." That was the last thing she said before she took the car keys and left to house to Jim.

All the mall, almost everything was covered in Christmas decorations. It looked so jolly and wonderful and it really did bring Christmas Spirit to the place. Winona had bought many things for the Dinner Party. She got a new table set, a cute Christmas cloth for the dining table, stockings and even some gold coloured candle holders along with some lovely scented candles.

As she was dragging her Christmasy filled shopping cart she was on her way to buy a put-together Christmas tree but something stopped her in her tracks. She spotted a pointy eared man sitting down by himself on a table at an open café. He looked lonely and a little sad.

That can't be Spock can it? Winona wondered. Vulcans rarely came into town here, they usually like to live in hotter environments. Hoping it was Spock she walked up to him and spoke to him.

"Hi- Are you Spock?" Winona asked him, her heart beating so fast, hoping that she wasn't wrong about this.

"Yes. And I don't believe we've met before." Spock looked up from the cup of coffee that he was nursing for quite a while.

"Ah-no you don't, but I do. I'm Jim's mother, I'm sure you remember him?" She smiled sweetly.

Spock was surprised. Jim's mother? So many questions ran through his mind. Had she been sent here by Jim? Maybe he has a chance with him? He had even stayed in this town the entire time just hoping for luck.

"Of course I do. Please. Take a seat and join me." He offered nicely and Winona sat down, setting the cart next to the small table. "Has Jim sent you here?"

"No dear he hasn't. He doesn't know anything about this. But I've heard quite a bit about you, Spock...and...I know everything, and I'd like to talk with you about it."

"You do?" His eyes widened a little.

"Yes. And look I know what you're feeling right now. I know that you have feelings for Jim and that's ok. But you can't enforce it on him like that. Jim right now is going through a... sensitive phase." Winona hesitated gently, hoping that she didn't sound rude. Although Spock looked down at his coffee looking guilty.

"Sensitive phase? How do you mean?" Spock asked, confused at Winona's choice of words.

"Christ I am going to regret mentioning this but-" Winona took a deep breath and sighed. "Jim's pregnant, Spock...and it's your baby."

Spock's whole world just went spinning and now he started feeling very ill and dizzy. "M-my...child? I am to be a father?"

"Yes Spock," Winona whispered while nodding. She felt so much sympathy for Spock right now.

"How about this, Jim and I are holding a Christmas Dinner Party at our house on Christmas night and I was wondering if you'd like to come?" She knew this was a bad idea but this situation can't last for long and the problem needs to be fixed.

Spock's face brightened up, "I would be delighted." Vulcans didn't celebrate Christmas so he has nothing better to do on the day.

"Great! I hope you like roasted turkey" She chuckled, taking out paper and pen to write the address. "It was nice meeting you Spock."

"It was nice to meet you too...oh and Winona- How far along is Jim?"

"He's 7 months, Spock." And with that she smiled and left the Vulcan to his thoughts.

After encounter with Spock, Winona bought a Christmas tree along with some decorations then went home. After putting all the stuff in the house she noticed that Jim had been laying down on the couch the whole time Winona was gone. She felt sorry for him. The pregnancy seemed harder on him than when she was pregnant. She decided not to wake him up.

"Jim! Wake up you lazy ass, it's Christmas!" Winona yelled from downstairs. It was 8 in the morning and she was making chocolate chip waffles!

There were two things that woke Jim up. The smell of the most delicious waffles in the whole wide world and his mother's annoying voice that pierced his ears every 5 minutes. Eventually he groggily got up from his bed and made his way downstairs.

"What's cookin' doc?" Jim teased.

"Chocolate chip waffles and vanilla ice cream." She smirked.

"God, mom it's enough that I'm carrying and extra 20 pounds of baby weight, no needed to get me fat more that I am." He joked, making Winona laugh softly.

"Haha, how are you both doing this morning?" She questioned as she placed three medium sized waffles on Jim's plate and a scoop of ice cream.

"Now that you mention it, she's kicking up a storm right now." He chuckled, placing his hand on his upper tummy. "I don't think she likes to be woken up this early."

Jim looked at his waffles and frowned. "Is there something wrong with the waffles?" Winona worried.

"No..it's missing something." Jim got up and reached for something in the fridge. He pulled out a jar of sliced pickled carrots. As he took out several sliced Winona scrunched her nose in disgust.

"Wow, I didn't even crave foods as gross as that when I was pregnant with you."

"What?! Give me a break will you?" Jim muffled a laugh as his mouth was stuffed with waffles and pickled carrots.

The moment was interrupted by the door bell ringing. Jim had wondered who could it be at this early hour but with the look on Winona's face as she ran to the door. It seemed like she already knew.

"Scotty!" Winona cheered as she greeted him.

Jim was somewhat felt really happy. Happier than he was 2 minutes ago. He waddled up to Scotty and reached in for a brief hug.

"Oof, I swear you're gettin' biggar by the minute." Scotty joked, making Jim softly punch him in the shoulder telling him to shut up.

"What are you doing here so early Scott?" Jim wondered.

"He's here to help me prepare for the dinner party tonight while you are going to rest until the guests start to arrive."

Jim made a frowny face and a noise of disapproval. He did actually need rest, he was feeling exhausted already. He went upstairs to take a long nap until Winona would come to wake him up.

Hours later, the sun settled and night came. The weather was freezing outside as it snowed but the fireplace in the Kirks' household kept them warm. The whole block was beautiful, every house was decorated with Christmas lights and statues of Santa on the porch of every few houses. There was even Christmas carolling. A group of young adults brining Christmas joy to the town.

As the night was slowly going by, the first doorbell rang. It was Sulu and Chekov and what seemed to be bags of presents that they brought along with them. They decided to come together after their shift at the diner ended. Lauren was going to be late because her shift ends an hour after Chekov and Sulu's. They both wore casual looking dull sweaters to keep them warm and cozy in the winter's night.

"Eyyy! Merry Christmas!" Sulu cheers as he reaches for a hug with Winona.

"Merry Christmas Sulu, and Merry Christmas to you Chekov." Winona greeted sweetly.

"Merry Chreestmas miss Kirk." Chekov replied sheepishly.

"Aw Chekov, it's ok, you can call me Winona," She smiled leading them both in the house.

"Where's Jim? I feel like I haven't seen him in so long!" Sulu exclaimed. Well, back at the diner, the guys haven't seen him in only a month. Jim had been going out a lot less because how tired he was all the time.

"He's upstairs napping, I'll go get him for you guys, just make yourselves at home."

Winona walked up the stairs quietly towards Jim's bedroom. She slowly opened the door expecting Jim to be huddle up in his warm covers but no, what she saw was Jim standing in front of his big dresser mirror, fixing up his collar. He wore an oversized white buttoned down shirt and grey sweater along with a pair of maternity jeans. He looked very handsome.

"Aw Jim I thought you were sleeping." Winona spoke, breaking the silence.

"I've been awake for a while, right when I smelt your roasted turkey actually." He joked as he turned around to face his mother.

"Well, you look wonderful. Why don't you come downstairs? Everyone is here except Lauren. She'll arrive soon." Winona reached waved her hand at Jim towards the door

They both went down stairs and everybody was happy to see Jim. It made him feel special for a moment to how everyone reacted. They all greeted each other, exchanging hugs and handshakes and maybe a few laughs every now and there.

"The turkey's nearly finished, we'll be able to eat soon." Winona announced.

Jim was marvelled at the sight of the whole house. It was decorated so beautifully and the dinner table in the dining room was just so amazing and colourful.

"Mom, the house looks fantastic!" Jim said in awe.

"It's not just my doing, it's Scotty's too. He was a big help in this." Winona acknowledged proudly.

Moments later, after all the presents were placed under the tree in the living room, everyone was sitting down, relaxed and armed up at the fire place. Suddenly there was a soft knock at the door.

"I'll get it, you guys just sit and relax." Sulu smiled and walked quickly to the door, leaving everyone with a confused face.

It was Lauren and she was beautifully dressed in a knee length black dress. She also had her hair done up nicely.

"Hey Sulu." Lauren smiled sheepishly.

"Hey to you too Lauren." Sulu had blushed just then, causing Lauren to blush too. No one has noticed it besides Jim but he knew that Lauren and Sulu have a crush on each other. He was secretly happy about this.

"Sorry I'm late you guys, traffic was horrible today." She said sadly. "But hey, I'm here now with presents and that's all that matters!" She cheered.

"Great! Now tha' everyone's 'ere, we should open all the presents just before dinner starts." Scotty addressed.

Everyone was happy to hear this but Winona wasn't. She looked a little anxious because Spock was late. He should have been here by now.

Jim had gotten the most presents, well, the baby had gotten the most presents. Everyone who came had bought at least one baby present for Jim. There were hand knitted pink and yellow boots, frilly hats, a baby carrier, toys and much more. After everyone opened their gifts they were left in an extra good mood. Sulu and Lauren especially. Sulu had gotten her a silver chain with an angel attached to it and wrote a car saying; "Are you an angel? Because you should be placed at the top of the Christmas tree this year." Lauren thought it was super cheesy but funny and found it to be the cutest thing ever. Lauren herself had gotten Sulu three pairs of suspenders and a navy blue buttoned down shirt.

"I think you would look really nice with suspenders." She blushed. Sulu had sworn that from now, he would wear these for the rest of his life.

Everyone 'aww'd them both, making it super awkward. It was funny and cute though. Jim was secretly super proud of Sulu.

Winona got up and went to the kitchen to check on the turkey. She was still anxious. Spock hasn't arrived yet.

Where the hell could he be?

Moments later, she took the turkey out of the oven and slowly walked to the dining room with it, "Dinner's ready!" She announced happily.

Everyone was starved, their mouths started to water at the smell of the delicious roasted turkey. They all sat down at the table digging in until the door bell was heard again. This time it created a small awkward silence.

"Who could that be?" Jim asked, super confused right now.

Winona completely ignored the question as she got up to get the door. "I'm so glad you're finally here." She whispered.

"I'm sorry for not being on time, there was quite a lot of traffic." Spock apologised as he handed Winona a small gift box to place under the tree.

Oh god no, this can't be happening right now. Jim felt dizzy and panicked. The baby kicked him harder than she usually does causing him to feel ill and lose his appetite.

"Please come in, dinner has just started." Winona said as she led Spock to the dining room. "Guys, meet Spock." She introduced everyone to Spock and they all gave awkward hello's in return.

"Jim." Spock nodded as a greeting.

"Spock." Jim spoke, but he was frozen. He felt that is he moved, he would probably throw up because of how nervous he felt.

"Ok now Spock you go sit next to Jim and let us all enjoy this nice meal because it's Christmas and nothing should ever ruin it." Winona coughed, sounding a little stressed.

The majority of the dinner was awkward and silent. Not a single conversation survived more than a few exchanged sentences. When Spock found out about Jim's pregnancy, he couldn't help but have more feelings for Jim. He snuck a few peaks towards Jim's belly without Jim noticing, wondering how two months ago he didn't realise that bump. After the meal was over everyone went in their own directions in the house. Sulu and Lauren went to the backyard to talk while have a glass of red whine, Chekov and Scotty sat in the living room talking about cars, engines and stuff that had to do with engineering and Winona was cleaning the dishes. All that's left was Spock and Jim alone at the table.

"You, me, upstairs, now." Jim demanded, pointing his finger towards the stairs.

Jim locked himself and Spock in his bedroom. "Ok, what the hell is going on? Are you stalking me? What is your problem Spock, you can't just waltz into my house like that!" Jim bursted out angrily.

"Jim...your mother invited me here." Spock said softly.

"Oh god, I can't believe this! My own mother!" Jim placed his hand on the arc of his back as it was starting to cramp.

"Jim why would you hide this from me? This is my child and I have every right to know everything about it." Spock demanded softly. "I cannot believe you would hide something like this from me this whole time. Apart of me is growing inside of you. A life, Jim. I want to be apart of that life, apart of yours."

"You don't have the right to anything, Spock. And I don't want you in my life, I don't love you, I never will. What I want for you right now is to get out of my house and I never want to see you again!" He cried, tears streaming down his cheeks.

"I-" Spock hesitated. "I am sorry Jim..I will never bother you again from now. But before I leave, I wanted to give you this small gift I got custom made for you." he reached into his pocket for a small black box with a white ribbon on it. "Merry Christmas Jim." And that was it. That was the last thing Spock said to Jim before he left.

Everybody downstairs was in shock. Spock left and Jim had slammed his bedroom door so hard that everyone flinched. Jim looked at the small box in his hand and violently threw it across the room. He laid down on his bed balling his eyes out. The baby responded by tumbling and kicking, notified that her mother was in distress.

Jim never came out of the room the whole night. He didn't care, he just wanted to be left alone.
