Chapter 9: Forgiveness and Joy
The following morning felt grey and gloomy in the Kirk household. Jim hadn't bothered to get out of bed yet and Winona hadn't bothered to make a proper breakfast - just coffee and plain toast. She has been too tired from hosting yesterday's eventful night.
Sitting at the counter and blissfully sipping her coffee, Winona stared into the distance of the kitchen, deep into her thoughts, thinking about yesterday's event. She couldn't help but feel slight guilt. It was her who invited Spock to the dinner and she should have consulted Jim about it first. But at the same time, she was upset and maybe a little angry at how Jim reacted yesterday. Not only did it cause humiliation, but she felt bad for Spock, who was only trying to make things better.
Winona lost her train of thought when she heard Jim waddle into the kitchen, immediately preparing a small breakfast. It was silent. Neither had said anything to each other until Winona broke the silence.
"Jim we need to talk."
"Mom not now please." He sighed.
"No Jim, now. You can't keep living like this!" She said, raising her voice. "I know I should have told you about Spock coming and I know you're mad at me about it. But you have to let that go for now and become aware of the real situation! All Spock wants is to at LEAST be apart of his baby's life. You can't just take that away from someone Jim. It's his flesh and blood too."
Jim was shocked at his mother's sudden outburst. He didn't say anything, he just sat down at the kitchen bench and stared at his hands. Seconds later he began crying quietly.
"What's wrong with me mom? Why am I such a jerk?" His voice broke.
"Jim, honey, you're not a jerk. You're just very hormonal, and that's really okay. And I know this is harsh, but you have to snap out of this one, for real. Because you're starting to hurt others badly." She soothed but reasoned calmly. "Talk to Spock. Apologise to him. Be friends with him. If you don't want to be in a relationship with him then at least give friendship a try."
Jim didn't say anything but all he did was nod and cry silently, agreeing with everything his mother was saying. "Okay mom. And I'm sorry, for being such an asshole." He apologised.
"It's okay Jimmy." She hugged him. Winona hadn't called her son 'Jimmy' since he was a little boy. The only times she called him that was when he was upset or hurt. It really had a comforting affect on him.
"Do you want me to invite Spock over and save all the trouble for you?"
Jim hesitated for a moment, thinking if this would be such a good idea or not. But he nodded in response. He wanted to finally settle this. Winona was happy that he said that it was okay to invite Spock over.
Later after the call, Winona was surprised that Spock accepted her invitation to come over for some lunch and to talk to Jim. She had told Jim that he was coming in half an hour, so he had time to get ready.
Jim took a quick shower and put some casual clothes on. Maternity jeans, a white t-shirt and a greyish blue sweater, which was very large yet it didn't hide his very obvious baby bump. He turned to the side, viewing himself in the full-sized mirror, taking a look at his progress in the pregnancy. He softly caressed his belly and chuckled as his baby girl reacted to his soft touch by kicking him multiple times.
His little moment with his daughter was interrupted when he heard the doorbell ring. His heart skipped a beat. He was nervous for what was to come. He doesn't know if Spock will be mad or not and that's what he was afraid of.
As he waddled down the stairs, he heard his mom greet Spock with a gentle, yet loud tone of voice which showed how happy she was. "It's nice to see you again Spock." He heard her say.
"Jim." Spock croaked.
"Hey Spock." Jim replied shyly.
"I have to run some errands." Winona huffed, breaking the short silence between the two. "I'll leave you two alone and I'll be back in an hour or two."
Jim knew she wasn't going to run errands. But it was good that she was leaving because they really needed their own space to talk. After she left, Spock and Jim stood in front of each other for several seconds which felt like hours.
"Please, come in and sit down." Jim gestured to the living room.
They sat on the three seater couch, both on each end, keeping their distance.
"Jim-"
"Spock wait." Jim interrupted. "I..I feel horrible for what I did and I just wanted to say that I'm really really sorry for that outburst yesterday. And not only that. My mother talked to me yesterday, she slapped some sense into me and the idea of me keeping the baby away from you isn't the right thing to do and I am sorry for what ever pain I've caused."
"Jim, it's alright. I forgive you." Spock stated calmly.
"Wait, really? You're not angry?"
"No Jim. I believe that being angered will not solve the problem. I forgive you and I don't want any bad blood between us."
Jim couldn't believe this. He was so relieved. He didn't expect this at ALL.
"Spock, I..I don't know what to say, I didn't think you'd forgive me so easily." Jim explained.
"It really is okay." Spock said, still with a soothing tone.
"Thank you Spock."
"May I ask you something Jim?" Spock questioned, quickly moving on.
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Can I have permission to feel the child?" Spock asked, staring at Jim's bump for a split second. His finger twitched slightly, desperately wanting to feel the movement of the baby.
"Of course you can." Jim replied nicely.
He moved closer to Spock, with slight difficulty, and without hesitation, he took Spock's hand and placed it against the side of his overly grown stomach. They sat there in silence for almost half a minute. Jim moved Spock's hand around so that the baby would know his presence. Spock then felt movement against the palm of his hand, which caused him to gasp very lightly.
"There it is." Jim smiled, placing his hand on the side of stomach as the baby kept kicking. "She seems to like you."
"She? It's a female?" Spock wondered. He was still staring at his hand which was still placed on the bump.
Jim nodded and just sat there watching Spock who was completely mesmerised by the movements of their child. Spock then looked up at Jim, with the look of awe in his face still there. They stared at each other for what felt like minutes but was only seconds. Jim's eye's slightly twinkled and Spock found that very fascinating.
For some reason, the pair would not take their lustful eyes off each other and Spock wouldn't retrieve his hand from Jim's stomach. Subconsciously, they both got closer and closer and at the same time they reached in for a small yet very long kiss. Spock placed his hands on Jim's hips and Jim put one of his hands above Spock's.
But quickly the kiss broke and Jim gasped slightly. "God I am so sorry Spock I didn't know what I was thinking oh God oh god." Jim panicked.
"No, Jim it's fine. Please." Spock reasoned calmly.
Jim got up and chuckled nervously, "No it's not fine! Me coming on to you like that, you must be disgusted! God what is wrong with me!"
"Jim I am not disgusted. I enjoyed that moment quite much actually." Spock confessed.
"Really? You're not offended by this?" Jim almost squeaked.
"No Jim. I am quite fond of you and I would never be offended by you."
'Oh my God this guy is so chill about everything, how does he even do it?!' Jim thought.
Jim sighed a sigh of relief and smiled sadly, "Would you like a cup of tea?"
"That would be delightful." Spock smiled.
For the next hour, Jim and Spock talked and got to know each other more. Spock spoke of his home in vulcan, his parents, his people and how differently he lived from humans. Jim told Spock about his job, Scotty, his childhood and how his father died, which surprisingly didn't cause Jim to be very emotional about it. But yes, it was a fun hour that they had spent together.
"Jim, I must say that you are a very interesting human being." Spock complimented.
"Well same goes for you Mr. Spock." Jim blushed.
Both men chuckled and took sips of their tea. Spock then softly placed his hand above Jim's. Jim didn't snatch his hand back but his heart almost skipped a beat. It felt nice to be touched gently like that. He'll never admit it but when Spock rubbed his stomach when the baby was kicking, he felt so good.
"Jim I'm home!" Winona called out, interrupting their moment.
Jim flinched and quickly retrieved his hand back on his laps. "Hey mom." He smiled.
Noticing his smile, Winona was happy to see that both men were not in conflict. "Hey you two. I bought some dinner." She announced holding up bags of Taco Bell. "Don't feel like cooking today." She admitted guiltily. Jim was happy that his mother bought Taco Bell and he couldn't wait to see Spock try it for the first time.
Winona couldn't be more proud of her son right now. The whole time, he and Spock were interacting like crazy. They were happy around each other. She was happy and she was glad that things are finally being settled down.
